1. அப்பொழுது தேமானியனாகிய எலிப்பாஸ் பிரதியுத்தரமாக:

1. And Eliphaz the Temanite answereth and saith: --

2. நாங்கள் உம்முடனே பேசத்துணிந்தால், ஆயாசப்படுவீரோ? ஆனாலும் பேசாமல் அடக்கிக்கொள்ளத்தக்கவன் யார்?

2. Hath one tried a word with thee? -- Thou art weary! And to keep in words who is able?

3. இதோ, நீர் அநேகருக்குப் புத்திசொல்லி, இளைத்த கைகளைத் திடப்படுத்தினீர்.

3. Lo, thou hast instructed many, And feeble hands thou makest strong.

4. விழுகிறவனை உம்முடைய வார்த்தைகளால் நிற்கப்பண்ணி, தள்ளாடுகிற முழங்கால்களைப் பலப்படுத்தினீர்.

4. The stumbling one do thy words raise up, And bowing knees thou dost strengthen.

5. இப்பொழுதோ துன்பம் உமக்கு நேரிட்டபடியினால் ஆயாசப்படுகிறீர்; அது உம்மைத் தொட்டதினால் கலங்குகிறீர்.

5. But now, it cometh in unto thee, And thou art weary; It striketh unto thee, and thou art troubled.

6. உம்முடைய தேவபக்தி உம்முடைய உறுதியாயும், உம்முடைய வழிகளின் உத்தமம் உம்முடைய நம்பிக்கையாயும் இருக்கவேண்டியதல்லவோ?

6. Is not thy reverence thy confidence? Thy hope -- the perfection of thy ways?

7. குற்றமில்லாமல் அழிந்தவன் உண்டோ? சன்மார்க்கர் அதம்பண்ணப்பட்டது எப்போ? இதை நினைத்துப்பாரும்.

7. Remember, I pray thee, Who, being innocent, hath perished? And where have the upright been cut off?

8. நான் கண்டிருக்கிறபடி, அநியாயத்தை உழுது, தீவினையை விதைத்தவர்கள், அதையே அறுக்கிறார்கள்.

8. As I have seen -- ploughers of iniquity, And sowers of misery, reap it!

9. தேவனுடைய சுவாசத்தினாலே அவர்கள் அழிந்து, அவருடைய நாசியின் காற்றினாலே நிர்மூலமாகிறார்கள்.

9. From the breath of God they perish, And from the spirit of His anger consumed.

10. சிங்கத்தின் கெர்ச்சிப்பும், துஷ்டசிங்கத்தின் முழக்கமும் அடங்கும்; பாலசிங்கங்களின் பற்களும் தகர்ந்துபோகும்.

10. The roaring of a lion, And the voice of a fierce lion, And teeth of young lions have been broken.

11. கிழச்சிங்கம் இரையில்லாமையால் மாண்டுபோகும், பாலசிங்கங்கள் சிதறுண்டுபோகும்.

11. An old lion is perishing without prey, And the whelps of the lioness do separate.

12. இப்போதும் ஒரு வார்த்தை என்னிடத்தில் இரகசியமாய் அறிவிக்கப்பட்டது, அதினுடைய மெல்லிய ஓசை என் செவியில் விழுந்தது.

12. And unto me a thing is secretly brought, And receive doth mine ear a little of it.

13. மனுஷர்மேல் அயர்ந்த நித்திரை இறங்குகையில், இராத்தரிசனங்களில் பலவித தோற்றங்கள் உண்டாகும்போது,

13. In thoughts from visions of the night, In the falling of deep sleep on men,

14. திகிலும் நடுக்கமும் என்னைப் பிடித்தது, என் எலும்புகளெல்லாம் நடுங்கினது.

14. Fear hath met me, and trembling, And the multitude of my bones caused to fear.

15. அப்பொழுது ஒரு ஆவி என் முகத்துக்கு முன்பாகக் கடந்தது, என் உடலின் மயிர் சிலிர்த்தது.

15. And a spirit before my face doth pass, Stand up doth the hair of my flesh;

16. அது ஒரு உருப்போல என் கண்களுக்குமுன் நின்றது, ஆனாலும் அதின் ரூபம் இன்னதென்று விளங்கவில்லை; அமைதலுண்டாயிற்று, அப்பொழுது நான் கேட்ட சத்தமாவது:

16. It standeth, and I discern not its aspect, A similitude [is] over-against mine eyes, Silence! and a voice I hear:

17. மனுஷன் தேவனைப்பார்க்கிலும் நீதிமானாயிருப்பானோ? மனுபுத்திரன் தன்னை உண்டாக்கினவரைப்பார்க்கிலும் சுத்தமாயிருப்பானோ?

17. 'Is mortal man than God more righteous? Than his Maker is a man cleaner?

18. கேளும், அவர் தம்முடைய பணிவிடைக்காரரிடத்தில் நம்பிக்கை வைப்பதில்லை; தம்முடைய தூதரின்மேலும் புத்தியீனத்தைச் சுமத்துகிறாரே,

18. Lo, in His servants He putteth no credence, Nor in His messengers setteth praise.'

19. புழுதியில் அஸ்திபாரம் போட்டு, மண் வீடுகளில் வாசம்பண்ணி, பொட்டுப்பூச்சியால் அரிக்கப்படுகிறவர்கள்மேல் அவர் நம்பிக்கை வைப்பது எப்படி?

19. Also -- the inhabitants of houses of clay, (Whose foundation [is] in the dust, They bruise them before a moth.)

20. காலைமுதல் மாலைவரைக்கும் மடிந்து, கவனிப்பார் ஒருவருமில்லாமல், நித்திய அழிவடைகிறார்கள்.

20. From morning to evening are beaten down, Without any regarding, for ever they perish.

21. அவர்களிலிருக்கிற அவர்களுடைய மேன்மை போய்விடுமல்லவோ? ஞானமடையாமல் சாகிறார்களே என்று சொன்னான்.

21. Hath not their excellency been removed with them? They die, and not in wisdom!
