1. அப்பொழுது தேமானியனாகிய எலிப்பாஸ் பிரதியுத்தரமாக:

1. Then Eliphaz the Themanite answered, and said:

2. நாங்கள் உம்முடனே பேசத்துணிந்தால், ஆயாசப்படுவீரோ? ஆனாலும் பேசாமல் அடக்கிக்கொள்ளத்தக்கவன் யார்?

2. If we begin to speak to thee, perhaps thou wilt take it ill, but who can withhold the words he hath conceived?

3. இதோ, நீர் அநேகருக்குப் புத்திசொல்லி, இளைத்த கைகளைத் திடப்படுத்தினீர்.

3. Behold thou hast taught many, and thou hast strengthened the weary hands:

4. விழுகிறவனை உம்முடைய வார்த்தைகளால் நிற்கப்பண்ணி, தள்ளாடுகிற முழங்கால்களைப் பலப்படுத்தினீர்.

4. Thy words have confirmed them that were staggering, and thou hast strengthened the trembling knees:

5. இப்பொழுதோ துன்பம் உமக்கு நேரிட்டபடியினால் ஆயாசப்படுகிறீர்; அது உம்மைத் தொட்டதினால் கலங்குகிறீர்.

5. But now the scourge is come upon thee, and thou faintest: it hath touched thee, and thou art troubled.

6. உம்முடைய தேவபக்தி உம்முடைய உறுதியாயும், உம்முடைய வழிகளின் உத்தமம் உம்முடைய நம்பிக்கையாயும் இருக்கவேண்டியதல்லவோ?

6. Where is thy fear, thy fortitude, thy patience, and the perfection of thy ways?

7. குற்றமில்லாமல் அழிந்தவன் உண்டோ? சன்மார்க்கர் அதம்பண்ணப்பட்டது எப்போ? இதை நினைத்துப்பாரும்.

7. Remember, I pray thee, who ever perished being innocent? or when were the just destroyed?

8. நான் கண்டிருக்கிறபடி, அநியாயத்தை உழுது, தீவினையை விதைத்தவர்கள், அதையே அறுக்கிறார்கள்.

8. On the contrary I have seen those who work iniquity, and sow sorrows, and reap them,

9. தேவனுடைய சுவாசத்தினாலே அவர்கள் அழிந்து, அவருடைய நாசியின் காற்றினாலே நிர்மூலமாகிறார்கள்.

9. Perishing by the blast of God, and consumed by the spirit of his wrath.

10. சிங்கத்தின் கெர்ச்சிப்பும், துஷ்டசிங்கத்தின் முழக்கமும் அடங்கும்; பாலசிங்கங்களின் பற்களும் தகர்ந்துபோகும்.

10. The roaring of the lion, and the voice of the lioness, and the teeth of the whelps of lions are broken:

11. கிழச்சிங்கம் இரையில்லாமையால் மாண்டுபோகும், பாலசிங்கங்கள் சிதறுண்டுபோகும்.

11. The tiger hath perished for want of prey, and the young lions are scattered abroad.

12. இப்போதும் ஒரு வார்த்தை என்னிடத்தில் இரகசியமாய் அறிவிக்கப்பட்டது, அதினுடைய மெல்லிய ஓசை என் செவியில் விழுந்தது.

12. Now there was a word spoken to me in private, and my ears by stealth as it were received the veins of its whisper.

13. மனுஷர்மேல் அயர்ந்த நித்திரை இறங்குகையில், இராத்தரிசனங்களில் பலவித தோற்றங்கள் உண்டாகும்போது,

13. In the horror of a vision by night, when deep sleep is wont to hold men,

14. திகிலும் நடுக்கமும் என்னைப் பிடித்தது, என் எலும்புகளெல்லாம் நடுங்கினது.

14. Fear seized upon me, and trembling, and all my bones were affrighted:

15. அப்பொழுது ஒரு ஆவி என் முகத்துக்கு முன்பாகக் கடந்தது, என் உடலின் மயிர் சிலிர்த்தது.

15. And when a spirit passed before me, the hair of my flesh stood up.

16. அது ஒரு உருப்போல என் கண்களுக்குமுன் நின்றது, ஆனாலும் அதின் ரூபம் இன்னதென்று விளங்கவில்லை; அமைதலுண்டாயிற்று, அப்பொழுது நான் கேட்ட சத்தமாவது:

16. There stood one whose countenance I knew not, an image before my eyes, and I heard the voice as it were of a gentle wind:

17. மனுஷன் தேவனைப்பார்க்கிலும் நீதிமானாயிருப்பானோ? மனுபுத்திரன் தன்னை உண்டாக்கினவரைப்பார்க்கிலும் சுத்தமாயிருப்பானோ?

17. Shall man be justified in comparison of God, or shall a man be more pure than his maker?

18. கேளும், அவர் தம்முடைய பணிவிடைக்காரரிடத்தில் நம்பிக்கை வைப்பதில்லை; தம்முடைய தூதரின்மேலும் புத்தியீனத்தைச் சுமத்துகிறாரே,

18. Behold they that serve him are not steadfast, and in his angels he found wickedness:

19. புழுதியில் அஸ்திபாரம் போட்டு, மண் வீடுகளில் வாசம்பண்ணி, பொட்டுப்பூச்சியால் அரிக்கப்படுகிறவர்கள்மேல் அவர் நம்பிக்கை வைப்பது எப்படி?

19. How much more shall they that dwell in houses of clay, who have an earthly foundation, be consumed as with the moth?

20. காலைமுதல் மாலைவரைக்கும் மடிந்து, கவனிப்பார் ஒருவருமில்லாமல், நித்திய அழிவடைகிறார்கள்.

20. From morning till evening they shall be cut down: and because no one understandeth, they shall perish for ever.

21. அவர்களிலிருக்கிற அவர்களுடைய மேன்மை போய்விடுமல்லவோ? ஞானமடையாமல் சாகிறார்களே என்று சொன்னான்.

21. And they that shall be left, shall be taken away from them: they shall die, and not in wisdom.
