1. அப்பொழுது தேமானியனாகிய எலிப்பாஸ் பிரதியுத்தரமாக:

1. Then Eliphaz the Temanite answered and said,

2. நாங்கள் உம்முடனே பேசத்துணிந்தால், ஆயாசப்படுவீரோ? ஆனாலும் பேசாமல் அடக்கிக்கொள்ளத்தக்கவன் யார்?

2. Have you been often spoken to in distress? But who shall endure the force of your words?

3. இதோ, நீர் அநேகருக்குப் புத்திசொல்லி, இளைத்த கைகளைத் திடப்படுத்தினீர்.

3. For seeing you have instructed many, and have strengthened the hands of the weak one,

4. விழுகிறவனை உம்முடைய வார்த்தைகளால் நிற்கப்பண்ணி, தள்ளாடுகிற முழங்கால்களைப் பலப்படுத்தினீர்.

4. and have supported the failing with words, and have imparted courage to feeble knees.

5. இப்பொழுதோ துன்பம் உமக்கு நேரிட்டபடியினால் ஆயாசப்படுகிறீர்; அது உம்மைத் தொட்டதினால் கலங்குகிறீர்.

5. Yet now that pain has come upon you, and touched you, you are troubled.

6. உம்முடைய தேவபக்தி உம்முடைய உறுதியாயும், உம்முடைய வழிகளின் உத்தமம் உம்முடைய நம்பிக்கையாயும் இருக்கவேண்டியதல்லவோ?

6. Is not your fear [founded] in folly, your hope also, and the mischief of your way?

7. குற்றமில்லாமல் அழிந்தவன் உண்டோ? சன்மார்க்கர் அதம்பண்ணப்பட்டது எப்போ? இதை நினைத்துப்பாரும்.

7. Remember then who has perished, being pure? Or when were the true-hearted utterly destroyed?

8. நான் கண்டிருக்கிறபடி, அநியாயத்தை உழுது, தீவினையை விதைத்தவர்கள், அதையே அறுக்கிறார்கள்.

8. Accordingly, as I have seen men plowing barren places, and they that sow them will reap sorrows for themselves.

9. தேவனுடைய சுவாசத்தினாலே அவர்கள் அழிந்து, அவருடைய நாசியின் காற்றினாலே நிர்மூலமாகிறார்கள்.

9. They shall perish by the command of the Lord, and shall be utterly consumed by the breath of His wrath.

10. சிங்கத்தின் கெர்ச்சிப்பும், துஷ்டசிங்கத்தின் முழக்கமும் அடங்கும்; பாலசிங்கங்களின் பற்களும் தகர்ந்துபோகும்.

10. The strength of the lion, and the voice of the lioness, and the exulting cry of serpents are quenched.

11. கிழச்சிங்கம் இரையில்லாமையால் மாண்டுபோகும், பாலசிங்கங்கள் சிதறுண்டுபோகும்.

11. The old lion has perished for want of food, and the lions' whelps have forsaken one another.

12. இப்போதும் ஒரு வார்த்தை என்னிடத்தில் இரகசியமாய் அறிவிக்கப்பட்டது, அதினுடைய மெல்லிய ஓசை என் செவியில் விழுந்தது.

12. But if there had been any truth in your words, none of these evils would have befallen you. Shall not my ear receive excellent [revelations] from Him?

13. மனுஷர்மேல் அயர்ந்த நித்திரை இறங்குகையில், இராத்தரிசனங்களில் பலவித தோற்றங்கள் உண்டாகும்போது,

13. But as [when] terror falls upon men, with dread and a sound in the night,

14. திகிலும் நடுக்கமும் என்னைப் பிடித்தது, என் எலும்புகளெல்லாம் நடுங்கினது.

14. horror and trembling seized me, and caused all my bones greatly to shake.

15. அப்பொழுது ஒரு ஆவி என் முகத்துக்கு முன்பாகக் கடந்தது, என் உடலின் மயிர் சிலிர்த்தது.

15. And a spirit came before my face; and my hair and flesh quivered.

16. அது ஒரு உருப்போல என் கண்களுக்குமுன் நின்றது, ஆனாலும் அதின் ரூபம் இன்னதென்று விளங்கவில்லை; அமைதலுண்டாயிற்று, அப்பொழுது நான் கேட்ட சத்தமாவது:

16. I arose and perceived it not. I looked, and there was no form before my eyes: but I only heard a breath and a voice, saying,

17. மனுஷன் தேவனைப்பார்க்கிலும் நீதிமானாயிருப்பானோ? மனுபுத்திரன் தன்னை உண்டாக்கினவரைப்பார்க்கிலும் சுத்தமாயிருப்பானோ?

17. What, shall a mortal be pure before the Lord? Or a man be blameless in regard to his works?

18. கேளும், அவர் தம்முடைய பணிவிடைக்காரரிடத்தில் நம்பிக்கை வைப்பதில்லை; தம்முடைய தூதரின்மேலும் புத்தியீனத்தைச் சுமத்துகிறாரே,

18. Since he trusts not in his servants, and perceives perverseness in his angels.

19. புழுதியில் அஸ்திபாரம் போட்டு, மண் வீடுகளில் வாசம்பண்ணி, பொட்டுப்பூச்சியால் அரிக்கப்படுகிறவர்கள்மேல் அவர் நம்பிக்கை வைப்பது எப்படி?

19. But as [for] them that dwell in houses of clay, of whom we also are formed of the same clay, He smites them like a moth.

20. காலைமுதல் மாலைவரைக்கும் மடிந்து, கவனிப்பார் ஒருவருமில்லாமல், நித்திய அழிவடைகிறார்கள்.

20. And from the morning to evening they no longer exist- they have perished, because they cannot help themselves.

21. அவர்களிலிருக்கிற அவர்களுடைய மேன்மை போய்விடுமல்லவோ? ஞானமடையாமல் சாகிறார்களே என்று சொன்னான்.

21. For He blows upon them, and they are withered: they have perished for lack of wisdom.
