1. அப்பொழுது தேமானியனாகிய எலிப்பாஸ் பிரதியுத்தரமாக:

1. Forsothe Eliphat Themanytes answeride, and seide,

2. நாங்கள் உம்முடனே பேசத்துணிந்தால், ஆயாசப்படுவீரோ? ஆனாலும் பேசாமல் அடக்கிக்கொள்ளத்தக்கவன் யார்?

2. If we bigynnen to speke to thee, in hap thou schalt take it heuyli; but who may holde a word conseyued?

3. இதோ, நீர் அநேகருக்குப் புத்திசொல்லி, இளைத்த கைகளைத் திடப்படுத்தினீர்.

3. Lo! thou hast tauyt ful many men, and thou hast strengthid hondis maad feynt.

4. விழுகிறவனை உம்முடைய வார்த்தைகளால் நிற்கப்பண்ணி, தள்ளாடுகிற முழங்கால்களைப் பலப்படுத்தினீர்.

4. Thi wordis confermyden men doutynge, and thou coumfortidist knees tremblynge.

5. இப்பொழுதோ துன்பம் உமக்கு நேரிட்டபடியினால் ஆயாசப்படுகிறீர்; அது உம்மைத் தொட்டதினால் கலங்குகிறீர்.

5. But now a wounde is comun on thee, and thou hast failid; it touchide thee, and thou art disturblid.

6. உம்முடைய தேவபக்தி உம்முடைய உறுதியாயும், உம்முடைய வழிகளின் உத்தமம் உம்முடைய நம்பிக்கையாயும் இருக்கவேண்டியதல்லவோ?

6. Where is thi drede, thi strengthe, and thi pacience, and the perfeccioun of thi weies?

7. குற்றமில்லாமல் அழிந்தவன் உண்டோ? சன்மார்க்கர் அதம்பண்ணப்பட்டது எப்போ? இதை நினைத்துப்பாரும்.

7. Y biseche thee, haue thou mynde, what innocent man perischide euere, ethir whanne riytful men weren doon awei?

8. நான் கண்டிருக்கிறபடி, அநியாயத்தை உழுது, தீவினையை விதைத்தவர்கள், அதையே அறுக்கிறார்கள்.

8. Certis rathir Y siy hem, that worchen wickidnesse, and sowen sorewis,

9. தேவனுடைய சுவாசத்தினாலே அவர்கள் அழிந்து, அவருடைய நாசியின் காற்றினாலே நிர்மூலமாகிறார்கள்.

10. சிங்கத்தின் கெர்ச்சிப்பும், துஷ்டசிங்கத்தின் முழக்கமும் அடங்கும்; பாலசிங்கங்களின் பற்களும் தகர்ந்துபோகும்.

11. கிழச்சிங்கம் இரையில்லாமையால் மாண்டுபோகும், பாலசிங்கங்கள் சிதறுண்டுபோகும்.

11. Tigris perischide, for sche hadde not prey; and the whelpis of a lioun ben distried.

12. இப்போதும் ஒரு வார்த்தை என்னிடத்தில் இரகசியமாய் அறிவிக்கப்பட்டது, அதினுடைய மெல்லிய ஓசை என் செவியில் விழுந்தது.

12. Certis an hid word was seid to me, and myn eere took as theueli the veynes of priuy noise therof.

13. மனுஷர்மேல் அயர்ந்த நித்திரை இறங்குகையில், இராத்தரிசனங்களில் பலவித தோற்றங்கள் உண்டாகும்போது,

13. In the hidousnesse of `nyytis siyt, whanne heuy sleep is wont to occupie men,

14. திகிலும் நடுக்கமும் என்னைப் பிடித்தது, என் எலும்புகளெல்லாம் நடுங்கினது.

14. drede and tremblyng helde me; and alle my boonys weren aferd.

15. அப்பொழுது ஒரு ஆவி என் முகத்துக்கு முன்பாகக் கடந்தது, என் உடலின் மயிர் சிலிர்த்தது.

15. And whanne the spirit `yede in my presence, the heiris of `my fleisch hadden hidousnesse.

16. அது ஒரு உருப்போல என் கண்களுக்குமுன் நின்றது, ஆனாலும் அதின் ரூபம் இன்னதென்று விளங்கவில்லை; அமைதலுண்டாயிற்று, அப்பொழுது நான் கேட்ட சத்தமாவது:

16. Oon stood, whos chere Y knewe not, an ymage bifor myn iyen; and Y herde a vois as of softe wynd.

17. மனுஷன் தேவனைப்பார்க்கிலும் நீதிமானாயிருப்பானோ? மனுபுத்திரன் தன்னை உண்டாக்கினவரைப்பார்க்கிலும் சுத்தமாயிருப்பானோ?

17. Whether a man schal be maad iust in comparisoun of God? ethir whethir a man schal be clennere than his Makere?

18. கேளும், அவர் தம்முடைய பணிவிடைக்காரரிடத்தில் நம்பிக்கை வைப்பதில்லை; தம்முடைய தூதரின்மேலும் புத்தியீனத்தைச் சுமத்துகிறாரே,

18. Lo! thei that seruen hym ben not stidefast; and he findith schrewidnesse in hise aungels.

19. புழுதியில் அஸ்திபாரம் போட்டு, மண் வீடுகளில் வாசம்பண்ணி, பொட்டுப்பூச்சியால் அரிக்கப்படுகிறவர்கள்மேல் அவர் நம்பிக்கை வைப்பது எப்படி?

19. Hou myche more thei that dwellen in housis of cley, that han an ertheli foundement, schulen be wastyd as of a mouyte.

20. காலைமுதல் மாலைவரைக்கும் மடிந்து, கவனிப்பார் ஒருவருமில்லாமல், நித்திய அழிவடைகிறார்கள்.

20. Fro morewtid til to euentid thei schulen be kit doun; and for no man vndurstondith, thei schulen perische with outen ende.

21. அவர்களிலிருக்கிற அவர்களுடைய மேன்மை போய்விடுமல்லவோ? ஞானமடையாமல் சாகிறார்களே என்று சொன்னான்.

21. Sotheli thei, that ben residue, schulen be takun awei; thei schulen die, and not in wisdom.
