1. நீ ஒரு அதிபதியோடே போஜனம்பண்ண உட்கார்ந்தால், உனக்கு முன்பாக இருக்கிறதை நன்றாய்க் கவனித்துப்பார்.

1. When thou sittest to eat with a ruler, consider diligently what [is] before thee;

2. நீ போஜனப்பிரியனாயிருந்தால், உன் தொண்டையிலே கத்தியை வை.

2. and put a knife to thy throat if thou [art] a man given to appetite.

3. அவனுடைய ருசியுள்ள பதார்த்தங்களை இச்சியாதே; அவைகள் கள்ளப்போஜனமாமே.

3. Do not be desirous of his dainties; for they [are] deceitful food.

4. ஐசுவரியவானாகவேண்டுமென்று பிரயாசப்படாதே; சுயபுத்தியைச் சாராதே.

4. Do not labour to be rich; cease from thine own wisdom.

5. இல்லாமற்போகும் பொருள்மேல் உன் கண்களைப் பறக்கவிடுவானேன்? அது கழுகைப்போல சிறகுகளைத் தனக்கு உண்டுபண்ணிக்கொண்டு, ஆகாயமார்க்கமாய்ப் பறந்துபோகும்.

5. Wilt thou set thine eyes upon riches which are not? For they shall certainly make themselves wings; they shall fly away as an eagle toward heaven.

6. வன்கண்ணனுடைய ஆகாரத்தைப் புசியாதே; அவனுடைய ருசியுள்ள பதார்த்தங்களை இச்சியாதே.

6. Do not eat the bread of [anyone who has] an evil eye, neither desire his dainty foods;

7. அவன் இருதயத்தின் நினைவு எப்படியோ, அப்படியே அவன் இருக்கிறான்; புசியும், பானம்பண்ணும் என்று அவன் உன்னோடே சொன்னாலும், அவன் இருதயம் உன்னோடே இராது.

7. for as he thinks in his soul, so [is] he; Eat and drink, he shall say unto thee, but his heart [is] not with thee.

8. நீ புசித்த துணிக்கையை வாந்திபண்ணி, உன் இனிய சொற்களை இழந்துபோவாய்.

8. Didst thou eat thy part? Thou shalt vomit it up and lose thy sweet words.

9. மூடனுடைய செவிகள் கேட்கப்பேசாதே; அவன் உன் வார்த்தைகளின் ஞானத்தை அசட்டை பண்ணுவான்.

9. Do not speak in the ears of a fool, for he will despise the prudence of thy words.

10. பூர்வ எல்லைக்குறியை மாற்றாதே; திக்கற்ற பிள்ளைகளுடைய நிலங்களை அபகரித்துக்கொள்ளாதே.

10. Do not remove the old landmark, and do not enter into the inheritance of the fatherless:

11. அவர்களுடைய மீட்பர் வல்லவர்; அவர் உன்னுடனே அவர்களுக்காக வழக்காடுவார்.

11. For their redeemer [is] mighty; he shall judge their cause against thee.

12. உன் இருதயத்தைப் புத்திமதிக்கும், உன் செவிகளை அறிவின் வார்த்தைகளுக்கும் சாய்ப்பாயாக.

12. Apply thine heart unto chastening and thine ears to the words of wisdom.

13. பிள்ளையை தண்டியாமல் விடாதே; அவனைப் பிரம்பினால் அடித்தால் அவன் சாகான்.

13. Do not withhold correction from the child; for [if] thou shall beat him with the rod, he shall not die.

14. நீ பிரம்பினால் அவனை அடிக்கிறதினால் பாதாளத்துக்கு அவன் ஆத்துமாவைத் தப்புவிப்பாயே.

14. Thou shalt beat him with the rod and shalt deliver his soul from Sheol.

15. என் மகனே, உன் இருதயம் ஞானமுள்ளதாயிருந்தால், என்னிலே என் இருதயம் மகிழும்.

15. My son, if thy heart is wise, my heart shall also rejoice;

16. உன் உதடுகள் செம்மையானவைகளைப் பேசினால், என் உள்ளிந்திரியங்கள் மகிழும்.

16. my kidneys shall also rejoice when thy lips speak right things.

17. உன் மனதைப் பாவிகள்மேல் பொறாமை கொள்ள விடாதே; நீ நாடோறும் கர்த்தரைப் பற்றும் பயத்தோடிரு.

17. Let not thy heart envy sinners, but [persevere] in the fear of the LORD all day long.

18. நிச்சயமாகவே முடிவு உண்டு; உன் நம்பிக்கை வீண்போகாது.

18. For surely there is an end, and thy hope shall not be cut off.

19. என் மகனே, நீ செவிகொடுத்து ஞானமடைந்து, உன் இருதயத்தை நல்வழியிலே நடத்து.

19. Hear thou, my son, and be wise, and straighten thy heart in the way.

20. மதுபானப்பிரியரையும் மாம்சப்பெருந்தீனிக்காரரையும் சேராதே.

20. Do not be among those who are drunk with wine; nor among gluttonous eaters of food;

21. குடியனும் போஜனப்பிரியனும் தரித்திரராவார்கள்; தூக்கம் கந்தைகளை உடுத்துவிக்கும்.

21. for the drunkard and the glutton shall come to poverty, and drowsiness shall cause them to wear rags.

22. உன்னைப் பெற்ற தகப்பனுக்குச் செவிகொடு; உன் தாய் வயதுசென்றவளாகும்போது அவளை அசட்டைபண்ணாதே.

22. Hearken unto thy father that begat thee, and despise not thy mother when she is old.

23. சத்தியத்தை வாங்கு, அதை விற்காதே; அப்படியே ஞானத்தையும் உபதேசத்தையும் புத்தியையும் வாங்கு.

23. Buy the truth and sell [it] not, [also] wisdom and instruction and understanding.

24. நீதிமானுடைய தகப்பன் மிகவும் களிகூருவான்; ஞானமுள்ள பிள்ளையைப் பெற்றவன் அவனால் மகிழுவான்.

24. The father of the righteous shall greatly rejoice, and he that begets a wise [child] shall have joy with him.

25. உன் தகப்பனும் உன் தாயும் சந்தோஷப்படுவார்கள்; உன்னைப் பெற்றவள் மகிழுவாள்.

25. Thy father and thy mother shall be glad, and she that bore thee shall rejoice.

26. என் மகனே, உன் இருதயத்தை எனக்குத் தா; உன் கண்கள் என் வழிகளை நோக்குவதாக.

26. My son, give me thine heart, and let thine eyes observe my ways.

27. வேசி ஆழமான படுகுழி; பரஸ்திரீ இடுக்கமான கிணறு.

27. For a whore [is] a deep ditch and a strange woman [is] a narrow pit.

28. அவள் கொள்ளைக்காரனைப்போல் பதிவிருந்து, மனுஷருக்குள்ளே பாதகரைப் பெருகப்பண்ணுகிறாள்.

28. She also lies in wait as [for] a prey and increases the transgressors among men.

29. ஐயோ! யாருக்கு வேதனை? யாருக்குத் துக்கம்? யாருக்குச் சண்டைகள்? யாருக்குப் புலம்பல்? யாருக்குக் காரணமில்லாத காயங்கள்? யாருக்கு இரத்தங்கலங்கின கண்கள்?

29. For who [shall be] the woe? for who [shall be] the woe? for who contention? for who quarrels? for who the wounds without cause? who shall have redness of eyes?

30. மதுபானம் இருக்கும் இடத்திலே தங்கித் தரிப்பவர்களுக்கும், கலப்புள்ள சாராயத்தை நாடுகிறவர்களுக்குந்தானே.

30. For those that tarry long at the wine; those that go to seek mixed wine.

31. மதுபானம் இரத்தவருணமாயிருந்து, பாத்திரத்தில் பளபளப்பாய்த் தோன்றும்போது, நீ அதைப் பாராதே; அது மெதுவாய் இறங்கும்.

31. Do not look upon the wine when it is red, when it gives its colour in the cup, it goes down smoothly.

32. முடிவிலே அது பாம்பைப்போல் கடிக்கும், விரியனைப்போல் தீண்டும்.

32. At the last it bites like a serpent and stings like an adder.

33. உன் கண்கள் பரஸ்திரீகளை நோக்கும்; உன் உள்ளம் தாறுமாறானவைகளைப் பேசும்.

33. Thine eyes shall behold strange women, and thine heart shall utter perverse things.

34. நீ நடுக்கடலிலே சயனித்திருக்கிறவனைப்போலும், பாய்மரத்தட்டிலே படுத்திருக்கிறவனைப்போலும் இருப்பாய்.

34. [Yea], thou shalt be as he that lies down in the midst of the sea or as he that sleeps at the rudder.

35. என்னை அடித்தார்கள், எனக்கு நோகவில்லை; என்னை அறைந்தார்கள், எனக்குச் சுரணையில்லை; நான் அதைப் பின்னும் தொடர்ந்து தேட எப்பொழுது விழிப்பேன் என்பாய்.

35. They have stricken me, [thou shalt say], [and] I was not sick; they have beaten me, [and] I felt [it] not; when I shall awake, I will seek it yet again.:
