1. நீ ஒரு அதிபதியோடே போஜனம்பண்ண உட்கார்ந்தால், உனக்கு முன்பாக இருக்கிறதை நன்றாய்க் கவனித்துப்பார்.

1. When you are invited to eat with a king, use your best manners.

2. நீ போஜனப்பிரியனாயிருந்தால், உன் தொண்டையிலே கத்தியை வை.

2. Don't go and stuff yourself! That would be just the same as cutting your throat.

3. அவனுடைய ருசியுள்ள பதார்த்தங்களை இச்சியாதே; அவைகள் கள்ளப்போஜனமாமே.

3. Don't be greedy for all of that fancy food! It may not be so tasty.

4. ஐசுவரியவானாகவேண்டுமென்று பிரயாசப்படாதே; சுயபுத்தியைச் சாராதே.

4. Give up trying so hard to get rich.

5. இல்லாமற்போகும் பொருள்மேல் உன் கண்களைப் பறக்கவிடுவானேன்? அது கழுகைப்போல சிறகுகளைத் தனக்கு உண்டுபண்ணிக்கொண்டு, ஆகாயமார்க்கமாய்ப் பறந்துபோகும்.

5. Your money flies away before you know it, just like an eagle suddenly taking off.

6. வன்கண்ணனுடைய ஆகாரத்தைப் புசியாதே; அவனுடைய ருசியுள்ள பதார்த்தங்களை இச்சியாதே.

6. Don't accept an invitation to eat a selfish person's food, no matter how good it is.

7. அவன் இருதயத்தின் நினைவு எப்படியோ, அப்படியே அவன் இருக்கிறான்; புசியும், பானம்பண்ணும் என்று அவன் உன்னோடே சொன்னாலும், அவன் இருதயம் உன்னோடே இராது.

7. People like that take note of how much you eat. They say, 'Take all you want!' But they don't mean it.

8. நீ புசித்த துணிக்கையை வாந்திபண்ணி, உன் இனிய சொற்களை இழந்துபோவாய்.

8. Each bite will come back up, and all your kind words will be wasted.

9. மூடனுடைய செவிகள் கேட்கப்பேசாதே; அவன் உன் வார்த்தைகளின் ஞானத்தை அசட்டை பண்ணுவான்.

9. Don't talk to fools-- they will just make fun.

10. பூர்வ எல்லைக்குறியை மாற்றாதே; திக்கற்ற பிள்ளைகளுடைய நிலங்களை அபகரித்துக்கொள்ளாதே.

10. Don't move a boundary marker or take the land that belongs to orphans.

11. அவர்களுடைய மீட்பர் வல்லவர்; அவர் உன்னுடனே அவர்களுக்காக வழக்காடுவார்.

11. God All-Powerful is there to defend them against you.

12. உன் இருதயத்தைப் புத்திமதிக்கும், உன் செவிகளை அறிவின் வார்த்தைகளுக்கும் சாய்ப்பாயாக.

12. Listen to instruction and do your best to learn.

13. Don't fail to correct your children. You won't kill them by being firm,

14. நீ பிரம்பினால் அவனை அடிக்கிறதினால் பாதாளத்துக்கு அவன் ஆத்துமாவைத் தப்புவிப்பாயே.

14. and it may even save their lives.

15. என் மகனே, உன் இருதயம் ஞானமுள்ளதாயிருந்தால், என்னிலே என் இருதயம் மகிழும்.

15. My children, if you show good sense, I will be happy,

16. உன் உதடுகள் செம்மையானவைகளைப் பேசினால், என் உள்ளிந்திரியங்கள் மகிழும்.

16. and if you are truthful, I will really be glad.

17. உன் மனதைப் பாவிகள்மேல் பொறாமை கொள்ள விடாதே; நீ நாடோறும் கர்த்தரைப் பற்றும் பயத்தோடிரு.

17. Don't be jealous of sinners, but always honor the LORD.

18. நிச்சயமாகவே முடிவு உண்டு; உன் நம்பிக்கை வீண்போகாது.

18. Then you will truly have hope for the future.

19. என் மகனே, நீ செவிகொடுத்து ஞானமடைந்து, உன் இருதயத்தை நல்வழியிலே நடத்து.

19. Listen to me, my children! Be wise and have enough sense to follow the right path.

20. மதுபானப்பிரியரையும் மாம்சப்பெருந்தீனிக்காரரையும் சேராதே.

20. Don't be a heavy drinker or stuff yourself with food.

21. குடியனும் போஜனப்பிரியனும் தரித்திரராவார்கள்; தூக்கம் கந்தைகளை உடுத்துவிக்கும்.

21. It will make you feel drowsy, and you will end up poor with only rags to wear.

22. உன்னைப் பெற்ற தகப்பனுக்குச் செவிகொடு; உன் தாய் வயதுசென்றவளாகும்போது அவளை அசட்டைபண்ணாதே.

22. Pay attention to your father, and don't neglect your mother when she grows old.

23. சத்தியத்தை வாங்கு, அதை விற்காதே; அப்படியே ஞானத்தையும் உபதேசத்தையும் புத்தியையும் வாங்கு.

23. Invest in truth and wisdom, discipline and good sense, and don't part with them.

24. நீதிமானுடைய தகப்பன் மிகவும் களிகூருவான்; ஞானமுள்ள பிள்ளையைப் பெற்றவன் அவனால் மகிழுவான்.

24. Make your father truly happy by living right and showing sound judgment.

25. உன் தகப்பனும் உன் தாயும் சந்தோஷப்படுவார்கள்; உன்னைப் பெற்றவள் மகிழுவாள்.

25. Make your parents proud, especially your mother.

26. என் மகனே, உன் இருதயத்தை எனக்குத் தா; உன் கண்கள் என் வழிகளை நோக்குவதாக.

26. My son, pay close attention, and gladly follow my example.

27. வேசி ஆழமான படுகுழி; பரஸ்திரீ இடுக்கமான கிணறு.

27. Bad women and unfaithful wives are like a deep pit--

28. அவள் கொள்ளைக்காரனைப்போல் பதிவிருந்து, மனுஷருக்குள்ளே பாதகரைப் பெருகப்பண்ணுகிறாள்.

28. they are waiting to attack you like a gang of robbers with victim after victim.

29. ஐயோ! யாருக்கு வேதனை? யாருக்குத் துக்கம்? யாருக்குச் சண்டைகள்? யாருக்குப் புலம்பல்? யாருக்குக் காரணமில்லாத காயங்கள்? யாருக்கு இரத்தங்கலங்கின கண்கள்?

29. Who is always in trouble? Who argues and fights? Who has cuts and bruises? Whose eyes are red?

30. மதுபானம் இருக்கும் இடத்திலே தங்கித் தரிப்பவர்களுக்கும், கலப்புள்ள சாராயத்தை நாடுகிறவர்களுக்குந்தானே.

30. Everyone who stays up late, having just one more drink.

31. மதுபானம் இரத்தவருணமாயிருந்து, பாத்திரத்தில் பளபளப்பாய்த் தோன்றும்போது, நீ அதைப் பாராதே; அது மெதுவாய் இறங்கும்.

31. Don't even look at that colorful stuff bubbling up in the glass! It goes down so easily,

32. முடிவிலே அது பாம்பைப்போல் கடிக்கும், விரியனைப்போல் தீண்டும்.

32. but later it bites like a poisonous snake.

33. உன் கண்கள் பரஸ்திரீகளை நோக்கும்; உன் உள்ளம் தாறுமாறானவைகளைப் பேசும்.

33. You will see weird things, and your mind will play tricks on you.

34. நீ நடுக்கடலிலே சயனித்திருக்கிறவனைப்போலும், பாய்மரத்தட்டிலே படுத்திருக்கிறவனைப்போலும் இருப்பாய்.

34. You will feel tossed about like someone trying to sleep on a ship in a storm.

35. என்னை அடித்தார்கள், எனக்கு நோகவில்லை; என்னை அறைந்தார்கள், எனக்குச் சுரணையில்லை; நான் அதைப் பின்னும் தொடர்ந்து தேட எப்பொழுது விழிப்பேன் என்பாய்.

35. You will be bruised all over, without even remembering how it all happened. And you will lie awake asking, 'When will morning come, so I can drink some more?'
