1. பின்னொருநாளிலே தேவபுத்திரர் கர்த்தருடைய சந்நிதியில் வந்து நின்றபோது, சாத்தானும் அவர்கள் நடுவிலே கர்த்தருடைய சந்நிதியில் வந்து நின்றான்.

1. Another day, the sons of God came to attend on Yahweh and Satan came with them too.

2. கர்த்தர் சாத்தானைப் பார்த்து: நீ எங்கேயிருந்து வருகிறாய் என்றார்; சாத்தான் கர்த்தருக்குப் பிரதியுத்தரமாக: பூமியெங்கும் உலாவி, அதில் சுற்றித்திரிந்து வருகிறேன் என்றான்.

2. So Yahweh said to Satan, 'Where have you been?' 'Prowling about on earth,' he answered, 'roaming around there.'

3. அப்பொழுது கர்த்தர் சாத்தானை நோக்கி: நீ என் தாசனாகிய யோபின்மேல் கவனம் வைத்தாயோ? உத்தமனும் சன்மார்க்கனும், தேவனுக்குப் பயந்து, பொல்லாப்புக்கு விலகுகிறவனுமான மனுஷனாகிய அவனைப்போல பூமியில் ஒருவனுமில்லை; முகாந்தரமில்லாமல் அவனை நிர்மூலமாக்கும்படி நீ என்னை ஏவினபோதிலும், அவன் இன்னும் தன் உத்தமத்திலே உறுதியாய் நிற்கிறான் என்றார்.

3. So Yahweh asked him, 'Did you pay any attention to my servant Job? There is no one like him on the earth: a sound and honest man who fears God and shuns evil. He persists in his integrity still; you achieved nothing by provoking me to ruin him.'

4. சாத்தான் கர்த்தருக்குப் பிரதியுத்தரமாக: தோலுக்குப் பதிலாகத் தோலையும், தன் ஜீவனுக்குப் பதிலாகத் தனக்கு உண்டான எல்லாவற்றையும், மனுஷன் கொடுத்துவிடுவான்.

4. 'Skin after skin!' Satan replied. 'Someone will give away all he has to save his life.

5. But stretch out your hand and lay a finger on his bone and flesh; I warrant you, he will curse you to your face.'

6. 'Very well,' Yahweh said to Satan, 'he is in your power. But spare his life.'

7. அப்பொழுது சாத்தான் கர்த்தருடைய சந்நிதியைவிட்டுப் புறப்பட்டு, யோபின் உள்ளங்கால் தொடங்கி அவன் உச்சந்தலைமட்டும் கொடிய பருக்களால் அவனை வாதித்தான்.

7. So Satan left the presence of Yahweh. He struck Job down with malignant ulcers from the sole of his foot to the top of his head.

8. Job took a piece of pot to scrape himself, and went and sat among the ashes.

9. Then his wife said to him, 'Why persist in this integrity of yours? Curse God and die.'

10. அதற்கு அவன்: நீ பயித்தியக்காரி பேசுகிறதுபோலப் பேசுகிறாய்; தேவன் கையிலே நன்மையைப் பெற்ற நாம் தீமையையும் பெறவேண்டாமோ என்றான்; இவைகள் எல்லாவற்றிலும் யோபு தன் உதடுகளினால் பாவஞ்செய்யவில்லை.

10. 'That is how a fool of a woman talks,' Job replied. 'If we take happiness from God's hand, must we not take sorrow too?' And in all this misfortune Job uttered no sinful word.

11. யோபுடைய மூன்று சிநேகிதராகிய தேமானியனான எலிப்பாசும், சூகியனான பில்தாதும், நாகமாத்தியனான சோப்பாரும், யோபுக்கு நேரிட்ட தீமைகள் யாவையும் கேள்விப்பட்டபோது, அவனுக்காகப் பரிதபிக்கவும், அவனுக்கு ஆறுதல் சொல்லவும், ஒருவரோடொருவர் யோசனை பண்ணிக்கொண்டு, அவரவர் தங்கள் ஸ்தலங்களிலிருந்து வந்தார்கள்.

11. The news of all the disasters that had fallen on Job came to the ears of three of his friends. Each of them set out from home -- Eliphaz of Teman, Bildad of Shuah and Zophar of Naamath -- and by common consent they decided to go and offer him sympathy and consolation.

12. Looking at him from a distance, they could not recognise him; they wept aloud and tore their robes and threw dust over their heads.

13. They sat there on the ground beside him for seven days and seven nights. To Job they spoke never a word, for they saw how much he was suffering.
