1. சவுல் ராஜ்யபாரம்பண்ணி, ஒரு வருஷமாயிற்று; அவன் இஸ்ரவேலை இரண்டாம் வருஷம் அரசாண்டபோது,

1. Saul was a child of one year when he began to reign, and he reigned two years over Israel.

2. இஸ்ரவேலில் மூவாயிரம்பேரைத் தனக்குத் தெரிந்துகொண்டான்; அவர்களில் இரண்டாயிரம்பேர் சவுலோடேகூட மிக்மாசிலும் பெத்தேல் மலையிலும், ஆயிரம்பேர் யோனத்தானோடேகூடப் பென்யமீன் நாட்டிலுள்ள கிபியாவிலும் இருந்தார்கள்; மற்ற ஜனங்களை அவரவர் கூடாரங்களுக்கு அனுப்பிவிட்டான்.

2. And Saul chose him three thousand men of Israel: and two thousand were with Saul in Machmas, and in mount Bethel: and a thousand with Jonathan in Gabaa of Benjamin, and the rest of the people he sent back every man to their dwellings.

3. யோனத்தான் கேபாவிலே தாணையம் இருந்த பெலிஸ்தரை முறிய அடித்தான்; பெலிஸ்தர் அதைக் கேள்விப்பட்டார்கள்; ஆகையினால் இதை எபிரெயர் கேட்கக்கடவர்கள் என்று சவுல் தேசமெங்கும் எக்காளம் ஊதுவித்தான்.

3. And Jonathan smote the garrison of the Philistines which was in Gabaa. And when the Philistines had heard of it, Saul sounded the trumpet over all the land, saying: Let the Hebrews hear.

4. தாணையம் இருந்த பெலிஸ்தரைச் சவுல் முறிய அடித்தான் என்றும், இஸ்ரவேலர் பெலிஸ்தருக்கு அருவருப்பானார்கள் என்றும், இஸ்ரவேலெல்லாம் கேள்விப்பட்டபோது, ஜனங்கள் சவுலுக்குப் பின்செல்லும்படி கில்காலுக்கு வரவழைக்கப்பட்டார்கள்.

4. And all Israel heard this report: Saul hath smitten the garrison of the Philistines: and Israel took courage against the Philistines. And the people were called together after Saul to Galgal.

5. பெலிஸ்தர் இஸ்ரவேலோடு யுத்தம்பண்ணும்படி முப்பதினாயிரம் இரதங்களோடும், ஆறாயிரம் குதிரைவீரரோடும், கடற்கரை மணலத்தனை ஜனங்களோடும் கூடிக்கொண்டுவந்து, பெத்தாவேலுக்குக் கிழக்கான மிக்மாசிலே பாளயமிறங்கினார்கள்.

5. The Philistines also were assembled to fight against Israel, thirty thousand chariots, and six thousand horsemen, and a multitude of people besides, like the sand on the sea shore for number. And going up they camped in Machmas at the east of Bethaven.

6. அப்பொழுது இஸ்ரவேலர் தங்களுக்கு உண்டான இக்கட்டைக் கண்டபோது, ஜனங்கள் தங்களுக்கு உண்டான நெருக்கத்தினாலே கெபிகளிலும், முட்காடுகளிலும், கன்மலைகளிலும், துருக்கங்களிலும், குகைகளிலும் ஒளித்துக்கொண்டார்கள்.

6. And when the men of Israel saw that they were straitened, (for the people were distressed,) they hid themselves in caves, and in thickets, and in rocks, and in dens, and in pits.

7. எபிரெயரில் சிலர் யோர்தானையும் கடந்து, காத் நாட்டிற்கும் கீலேயாத் தேசத்திற்கும் போனார்கள்; சவுலோ இன்னும் கில்காலில் இருந்தான்; சகல ஜனங்களும் பயந்துகொண்டு அவனுக்குப் பின்சென்றார்கள்.

7. And some of the Hebrews passed over the Jordan into the land of Gad and Galaad. And when Saul was yet in Galgal, all the people that followed him were greatly afraid.

8. அவன் தனக்குச் சாமுவேல் குறித்தகாலத்தின்படி ஏழுநாள்மட்டும் காத்திருந்தான்; சாமுவேல் கில்காலுக்கு வரவில்லை, ஜனங்கள் அவனை விட்டுச் சிதறிப்போனார்கள்.

8. And he waited seven days according to the appointment of Samuel, I and Samuel came not to Galgal, and the people slipt away from him.

9. அப்பொழுது சவுல்: சர்வாங்கதகனபலியையும் சமாதானபலிகளையும் என்னிடத்தில் கொண்டுவாருங்கள் என்று சொல்லி, சர்வாங்கதகனபலியைச் செலுத்தினான்.

9. Then Saul said: Bring me the holocaust, and the peace offerings. And he offered the holocaust.

10. அவன் சர்வாங்கதகனபலியிட்டு முடிகிறபோது, இதோ, சாமுவேல் வந்தான்; சவுல் அவனைச் சந்தித்து வந்தனஞ்செய்ய அவனுக்கு எதிர்கொண்டு போனான்.

10. And when he had made an end of offering the holocaust, behold Samuel came: and Saul went forth to meet him and salute him.

11. நீர் செய்தது என்ன என்று சாமுவேல் கேட்டதற்கு, சவுல்: ஜனங்கள் என்னைவிட்டுச் சிதறிப்போகிறதையும், குறித்த நாட்களின் திட்டத்திலே நீர் வராததையும், பெலிஸ்தர் மிக்மாசிலே கூடிவந்திருக்கிறதையும், நான் கண்டபடியினாலே,

11. And Samuel said to him: What hast thou done? Saul answered: Because I saw that the people slipt from me, and thou wast not come according to the days appointed, and the Philistines were gathered together in Machmas,

12. கில்காலில் பெலிஸ்தர் எனக்கு விரோதமாய் வந்துவிடுவார்கள் என்றும், நான் இன்னும் கர்த்தருடைய சமுகத்தை நோக்கி விண்ணப்பம்பண்ணவில்லை என்றும், எண்ணித் துணிந்து, சர்வாங்க தகனபலியைச் செலுத்தினேன் என்றான்.

12. I said: Now will the Philistines come down upon me to Galgal, and I have not appeased the face of the Lord. Forced by necessity, I offered the holocaust.

13. சாமுவேல் சவுலைப் பார்த்து: புத்தியீனமாய்ச் செய்தீர்; உம்முடைய தேவனாகிய கர்த்தர் உமக்கு விதித்த கட்டளையைக் கைக்கொள்ளாமற்போனீர்; மற்றப்படி கர்த்தர் இஸ்ரவேலின்மேல் உம்முடைய ராஜ்யபாரத்தை என்றைக்கும் ஸ்திரப்படுத்துவார்.

13. And Samuel said to Saul: Thou hast done foolishly, and hast not kept the commandments of the Lord thy God, which he commanded thee. And if thou hadst not done thus, the Lord would now have established thy kingdom over Israel for ever.

14. இப்போதோ உம்முடைய ராஜ்யபாரம் நிலைநிற்காது; கர்த்தர் தம்முடைய இருதயத்திற்கு ஏற்ற ஒரு மனுஷனைத் தமக்குத் தேடி, அவனைக் கர்த்தர் தம்முடைய ஜனங்கள்மேல் தலைவனாயிருக்கக் கட்டளையிட்டார்; கர்த்தர் உமக்கு விதித்த கட்டளையை நீர் கைக்கொள்ளவில்லையே என்று சொன்னான்.

14. But thy kingdom shall not continue. The Lord hath sought him a man according to his own heart: and him hath the Lord commanded to be prince over his people, because thou hast not observed that which the Lord commanded.

15. சாமுவேல் எழுந்திருந்து, கில்காலைவிட்டு, பென்யமீன் நாட்டிலுள்ள கிபியாவுக்குப் போனான்; சவுல் தன்னோடேகூட இருக்கிற ஜனத்தைத் தொகை பார்க்கிறபோது, ஏறக்குறைய அறுநூறுபேர் இருந்தார்கள்.

15. And Samuel arose and went up from Galgal to Gabaa of Benjamin. And the rest of the people went up after Saul, to meet the people who fought against them, going from Galgal to Gabaa in the hill of Benjamin. And Saul numbered the people, that were found with him, about six hundred men.

16. சவுலும் அவன் குமாரனாகிய யோனத்தானும் அவர்களோடேகூட இருக்கிற ஜனங்களும் பென்யமீன் நாட்டிலுள்ள கிபியாவில் இருந்துவிட்டார்கள்; பெலிஸ்தரோ மிக்மாசிலே பாளயமிறங்கியிருந்தார்கள்.

16. And Saul and Jonathan his son, and the people that were present with them, were in Gabaa of Benjamin: but the Philistines encamped in Machmas.

17. கொள்ளைக்காரர் பெலிஸ்தரின் பாளயத்திலிருந்து மூன்று படையாய்ப் புறப்பட்டு வந்தார்கள்; ஒரு படை ஒப்ரா வழியாய்ச் சூவால் நாட்டிற்கு நேராகப்போயிற்று.

17. And there went out of the camp of the Philistines three companies to plunder. One company went towards the way of Ephra to the land of Sual;

18. வேறொரு படை பெத்தொரோன் வழியாய்ப் போயிற்று; வேறொரு படை வனாந்தரத்தில் இருக்கிற செபோயீமின் பள்ளத்தாக்குக்கு எதிரான எல்லைவழியாய்ப் போயிற்று.

18. And another went by the way of Beth-horon, and the third turned to the way of the border, above the valley of Seboim towards the desert.

19. எபிரெயர் பட்டயங்களையாகிலும் ஈட்டிகளையாகிலும் உண்டுபண்ணாதபடிக்குப் பார்த்துகொள்ள வேண்டும் என்று பெலிஸ்தர் சொல்லியிருந்தபடியால், இஸ்ரவேல் தேசத்தில் எங்கும் ஒரு கொல்லன் அகப்படவில்லை.

19. Now there was no smith to be found in all the land of Israel, for the Philistines had taken this precaution, lest the Hebrews should make them swords or spears.

20. இஸ்ரவேலர் யாவரும் அவரவர் தங்கள் கொழுவிரும்புகளையும், தங்கள் மண்வெட்டிகளையும், தங்கள் கோடரிகளையும், தங்கள் கடப்பாரைகளையும் தீட்டிக் கூர்மையாக்குகிறதற்கு, பெலிஸ்தரிடத்துக்குப் போகவேண்டியதாயிருந்தது.

20. So all Israel went down to the Philistines, to sharpen every man his ploughshare, and his spade, and his axe, and his rake.

21. கடப்பாரைகளையும், மண்வெட்டிகளையும், முக்கூருள்ள ஆயுதங்களையும், கோடரிகளையும், தாற்றுக்கோல்களையும் கூர்மையாக்குகிறதற்கு அரங்கள் மாத்திரம் அவர்களிடத்தில் இருந்தது.

21. So that their shares, and their spades, and their forks, and their axes were blunt, even to the goad, which was to be mended.

22. யுத்தநாள் வந்தபோது, சவுலுக்கும் அவன் குமாரனாகிய யோனத்தானுக்குமேயன்றி, சவுலோடும் யோனத்தானோடும் இருக்கிற ஜனங்களில் ஒருவர் கையிலும் பட்டயமும் ஈட்டியும் இல்லாதிருந்தது.

22. And when the day of battle was come, there was neither sword nor spear found in the hand of any of the people that were with Saul and Jonathan, except Saul and Jonathan his son.

23. பெலிஸ்தரின் பாளயம் மிக்மாசிலிருந்து போகிற வழிமட்டும் பரம்பியிருந்தது.

23. And the army of the Philistines went out in order to advance further in Machmas.
