1. கானான் தேசத்தில் நடந்த சகல யுத்தங்களையும் அறியாதிருந்த இஸ்ரவேலராகிய அனைவரையும் சோதிப்பதற்காகவும்,

1. These are the nations which ADONAI allowed to remain, in order to put to the test all the people of Isra'el who had not known any of the wars with Kena'an.

2. இஸ்ரவேல் புத்திரரின் சந்ததியாரும் அதற்குமுன் யுத்தஞ்செய்ய அறியாதிருந்தவர்களும் அவைகளை அறியும்படி பழக்குவிப்பதற்காகவும் கர்த்தர் விட்டுவைத்த ஜாதிகள் யாரென்றால்:

2. This was only so that the generations of Isra'el who had previously known nothing of war might learn about it.

3. பெலிஸ்தரின் ஐந்து அதிபதிகளும், சகல கானானியரும், சீதோனியரும், பாகால்எர்மோன் துவக்கி ஆமாத்திற்குள் பிரவேசிக்கும்வரைக்கும் லீபனோனின் மலைகளிலே குடியிருக்கிற ஏவியருமே.

3. These nations consisted of the five chiefs of the P'lishtim, all the Kena'ani, the Tzidoni, and the Hivi who lived in the hills of the L'vanon between Mount Ba'al-Hermon and the entrance to Hamat.

4. கர்த்தர் மோசேயைக்கொண்டு தங்கள் பிதாக்களுக்கு விதித்த கற்பனைகளுக்கு இஸ்ரவேலர் கீழ்ப்படிவார்களோ என்று அறியும்படி, இஸ்ரவேலரை அவர்களாலே சோதிப்பதற்காக அவர்கள் விடப்பட்டிருந்தார்கள்.

4. They stayed there to test whether Isra'el would pay attention to the[ mitzvot] of ADONAI, which, through Moshe, he had ordered their ancestors to obey.

5. இப்படி இஸ்ரவேல் புத்திரர், கானானியர், ஏத்தியர், எமோரியர், பெரிசியர், ஏவியர், எபூசியராகிய இவர்கள் நடுவே குடியிருந்து,

5. So the people of Isra'el lived among the Kena'ani, Hitti, Emori, P'rizi, Hivi and Y'vusi;

6. அவர்களுடைய குமாரத்திகளை விவாகம்பண்ணி, தங்களுடைய குமாரத்திகளை அவர்கள் குமாரருக்குக் கொடுத்து, அவர்கள் தேவர்களைச் சேவித்தார்கள்.

6. taking their daughters as their wives, giving their own daughters to their sons and serving their gods.

7. இப்படி இஸ்ரவேல் புத்திரர் கர்த்தரின் பார்வைக்குப் பொல்லாப்பானதைச் செய்து, தங்கள் தேவனாகிய கர்த்தரை மறந்து, பாகால்களையும் தோப்பு விக்கிரகங்களையும் சேவிக்கிறபோது,

7. Thus the people of Isra'el did what was evil from ADONAI's perspective, forgot ADONAI their God, and served the [ba'alim] and [asherim].

8. கர்த்தர் இஸ்ரவேலின்மேல் கோபமூண்டவராகி, அவர்களை மெசொப்பொத்தாமியாவின் ராஜாவாகிய கூசான்ரிஷதாயீமின் கையிலே விற்றுப்போட்டார்; இப்படியே இஸ்ரவேல் புத்திரர் கூசான்ரிஷதாயீமை எட்டு வருஷம் சேவித்தார்கள்.

8. Therefore the anger of ADONAI blazed against Isra'el, and he gave them over into the hands of Kushan-Rish'atayim king of Aram-Naharayim; and the people of Isra'el served Kushan-Rish'atayim eight years.

9. இஸ்ரவேல் புத்திரர் கர்த்தரை நோக்கிக் கூப்பிட்டபோது, கர்த்தர் இஸ்ரவேல் புத்திரரை இரட்சிக்கும்படி காலேபின் தம்பியான கேனாசுடைய குமாரனாகிய ஒத்னியேல் என்னும் ஒரு இரட்சகனை அவர்களுக்கு எழும்பப்பண்ணினார்.

9. But when the people of Isra'el cried out to ADONAI, ADONAI raised up a savior for the people of Isra'el; and he rescued them; this was 'Otni'el, the son of Kalev's younger brother K'naz.

10. அவன்மேல் கர்த்தருடைய ஆவி வந்திருந்ததினால், அவன் இஸ்ரவேலை நியாயம் விசாரித்து, யுத்தம்பண்ணப் புறப்பட்டான்; கர்த்தர் மெசொப்பொத்தாமியாவின் ராஜாவாகிய கூசான்ரிஷதாயீமை அவன் கையிலே ஒப்புக்கொடுத்தார்; ஆகையால் அவன் கை கூசான்ரிஷதாயீமின்மேல் பலங்கொண்டது.

10. The spirit of ADONAI came upon him, and he judged Isra'el. Then he went out to war, and ADONAI gave Kushan-Rish'atayim king of Aram into his hands; his power prevailed against Kushan-Rish'atayim.

11. தேசம் நாற்பது வருஷம் அமைதலாயிருந்தது. கேனாசின் குமாரனாகிய ஒத்னியேல் மரணமடைந்தான்.

11. So the land had rest for forty years, until 'Otni'el the son of K'naz died.

12. இஸ்ரவேல் புத்திரர் மறுபடியும் கர்த்தரின் பார்வைக்குப் பொல்லாப்பானதைச் செய்தார்கள்; அவர்கள் கர்த்தரின் பார்வைக்குப் பொல்லாப்பானதைச் செய்தபடியால், கர்த்தர் எக்லோன் என்னும் மோவாபின் ராஜாவை இஸ்ரவேலுக்கு விரோதமாய்ப் பலக்கப்பண்ணினார்.

12. But the people of Isra'el again did what was evil from ADONAI's perspective, so ADONAI strengthened 'Eglon the king of Mo'av against Isra'el, because they had done what was evil from ADONAI's perspective.

13. அவன் அம்மோன் புத்திரரையும் அமலேக்கியரையும் கூட்டிக்கொண்டு வந்து, இஸ்ரவேலை முறிய அடித்தான்; பேரீச்சமரங்களின் பட்டணத்தையும் பிடித்தான்.

13. In confederation with the people of 'Amon and 'Amalek, 'Eglon went out and defeated Isra'el, capturing the City of Date-Palms;

14. இப்படியே இஸ்ரவேல் புத்திரர் எக்லோன் என்னும் மோவாபின் ராஜாவைப் பதினெட்டு வருஷம் சேவித்தார்கள்.

14. and the people of Isra'el served 'Eglon the king of Mo'av eighteen years.

15. இஸ்ரவேல் புத்திரர் கர்த்தரை நோக்கிக் கூப்பிட்டபோது, கர்த்தர் அவர்களுக்குப் பென்யமீன் கோத்திரத்தானாகிய கேராவின் மகன் ஏகூத் என்னும் இரட்சகனை எழும்பப்பண்ணினார்; அவன் இடதுகைப் பழக்கமுள்ளவனாயிருந்தான்; அவன் கையிலே இஸ்ரவேல் புத்திரர் மோவாபின் ராஜாவாகிய எக்லோனுக்குக் காணிக்கை அனுப்பினார்கள்.

15. But when the people of Isra'el cried out to ADONAI, ADONAI raised up for them a savior, Ehud the son of Gera, from the tribe of Binyamin, a left-handed man. The people of Isra'el appointed him to take their tribute to 'Eglon the king of Mo'av.

16. ஏகூத், இருபுறமும் கருக்கும் ஒரு முழ நீளமுமான ஒரு கத்தியை உண்டுபண்ணி, அதைத் தன் வஸ்திரத்துக்குள்ளே தன் வலதுபுறத்து இடுப்பிலே கட்டிக்கொண்டு,

16. Ehud made himself a double-edged sword eighteen inches long and strapped it to his right thigh under his clothes.

17. காணிக்கையை மோவாபின் ராஜாவாகிய எக்லோனுக்குச் செலுத்தினான்; எக்லோன் மிகவும் ஸ்தூலித்த மனுஷனாயிருந்தான்.

17. Then he presented the tribute to 'Eglon king of Mo'av. Now 'Eglon was a very fat man.

18. அவன் காணிக்கையைச் செலுத்தித் தீர்ந்தபின்பு, காணிக்கையைச் சுமந்து வந்த ஜனங்களை அனுப்பிவிட்டான்.

18. When he had finished presenting the tribute, he dismissed the people who had brought it.

19. அவனோ கில்காலிலுள்ள சிலைகள் இருக்கும் இடத்திலிருந்து திரும்பிவந்து: ராஜாவே, உம்மிடத்தில் சொல்லவேண்டிய இரகசியமான ஒரு வார்த்தை உண்டு என்றான். அதற்கு அவன்: பொறு என்றான்; அப்பொழுது அவனிடத்தில் நின்ற யாவரும் அவனை விட்டு வெளியே போய்விட்டார்கள்.

19. But he himself, after reaching the quarries at Gilgal, went back and said, 'King, I have a secret message for you.' The king commanded silence, and all his attendants withdrew.

20. ஏகூத் அவன் கிட்டே போனான்; அவனோ தனக்குத் தனிப்புறம் இருந்த குளிர்ச்சியான அறைவீட்டில் உட்கார்ந்திருந்தான்; அப்பொழுது ஏகூத்: உம்மிடத்திலே சொல்லவேண்டிய தேவவாக்கு எனக்கு உண்டு என்றான்; அவன் தன் ஆசனத்திலிருந்து எழுந்திருந்தான்.

20. Ehud came to him; he was sitting alone by himself in his upstairs room, where it was cool. Ehud said: 'I have a message from God for you.' As the king arose from his seat,

21. உடனே ஏகூத் தன் இடதுகையை நீட்டி, தன் வலதுபுறத்து இடுப்பிலே கட்டியிருந்த கத்தியை உருவி, அதை அவன் வயிற்றிற்குள் பாய்ச்சினான்.

21. Ehud reached out with his left hand, took the sword from his right thigh, and thrust it into the king's belly.

22. அலகோடேகூடக் கைப்பிடியும் உள்ளே புகுந்தது; அவனுடைய வயிற்றிற்குள் போன கத்தியை இவன் இழுக்கக்கூடாதபடிக்கு, நிணம் அலகைச் சுற்றிக் கொண்டடைத்தது; அது பின்புறத்திலே புறப்பட்டது.

22. The hilt too went in after the blade, and the fat closed around the blade, for he did not draw the sword out of his belly, so that it came out behind.

23. ஏகூத் புறப்பட்டு, அறைவீட்டின் கதவைச் சாத்திப் பூட்டிப்போட்டு, கொலுக்கூடத்தின் வழியாய்ப் போய்விட்டான்.

23. Then Ehud went out onto the porch, shut the doors of the upstairs room behind him and locked them.

24. அவன் போனபின்பு ஊழியக்காரர் வந்து பார்த்தார்கள்; இதோ, அறைவீட்டின் கதவு பூட்டியிருந்தது; ஆகையால் அவர் அந்தக் குளிர்ச்சியான அறையிலே மலஜலாதிக்கிருக்கிறாராக்கும் என்றார்கள்.

24. After Ehud had left, the king's servants came. Seeing that the doors of the upper room were locked, they said, 'He must be relieving himself in the inner part of the cool room.'

25. அவர்கள் சலித்துப்போகுமட்டும் காத்திருந்தார்கள்; அவன் அறைவீட்டின் கதவைத் திறக்கவில்லை; ஆகையால் ஒரு திறவுகோலை எடுத்துத் திறந்தார்கள்; இதோ, அவர்கள் ஆண்டவன் தரையிலே செத்துக்கிடந்தான்.

25. They waited until they became embarrassed, but he still didn't open the doors of the upstairs room. So they took the key and opened them; and there before them lay their master, dead on the ground.

26. அவர்கள் தாமதித்துக்கொண்டிருந்தபோது, ஏகூத் ஓடிப்போய், சிலைகளுள்ள இடத்தைக் கடந்து, சேயிராத்தைச் சேர்ந்து தப்பினான்.

26. But while they were delaying, Ehud escaped- he passed beyond the quarries and arrived safely in Se'irah.

27. அங்கே வந்தபோது எப்பிராயீம் மலையில் எக்காளம் ஊதினான்; அப்பொழுது இஸ்ரவேல் புத்திரர் அவனோடேகூட மலையிலிருந்து இறங்கினார்கள்; அவன் அவர்களுக்கு முன்பாக நடந்து:

27. Upon arrival in the hills of Efrayim, he began sounding the call on the [shofar]; and the people of Isra'el went down with him from the hill-country; he himself took the lead.

28. என்னைப் பின்தொடர்ந்து வாருங்கள்; கர்த்தர் உங்கள் பகைஞராகிய மோவாபியரை உங்கள் கைகளில் ஒப்புக்கொடுத்தார் என்றான். அவர்கள் அவனைப் பின்தொடர்ந்துபோய், மோவாபுக்கு எதிரான யோர்தான் துறைகளைப் பிடித்து, ஒருவனையும் கடந்துபோகவொட்டாமல்,

28. He said to them: 'Follow me, because ADONAI has given your enemy Mo'av into your hands. They went down after him, seized the fords of the Yarden opposite Mo'av and permitted no one to cross.

29. அக்காலத்திலே மோவாபியரில் ஏறக்குறையப் பதினாயிரம் பேரை வெட்டினார்கள்; அவர்களெல்லாரும் புஷ்டியுள்ளவர்களும் பராக்கிரமசாலிகளுமாயிருந்தார்கள்; அவர்களில் ஒருவனும் தப்பவில்லை.

29. On that occasion they defeated Mo'av, some ten thousand men, all tough, experienced soldiers; not one of them escaped.

30. இப்படியே அந்நாளிலே மோவாப் இஸ்ரவேலுடைய கையின்கீழ்த் தாழ்த்தப்பட்டது; அதனாலே தேசம் எண்பது வருஷம் அமைதலாயிருந்தது.

30. Thus was Mo'av subdued that day under the power of Isra'el. Then the land had rest for eighty years.

31. அவனுக்குப்பிற்பாடு ஆனாத்தின் குமாரன் சம்கார் எழும்பினான்; அவன் பெலிஸ்தரில் அறுநூறு பேரை ஒரு தாற்றுக்கோலால் முறிய அடித்தான்; அவனும் இஸ்ரவேலை இரட்சித்தான்.

31. After Ehud came Shamgar the son of 'Anat, who killed 600 P'lishtim with an oxgoad; and he too rescued Isra'el.
