1. ஆபிரகாமின் நாட்களில் உண்டான பஞ்சத்தை அல்லாமல், பின்னும் ஒரு பஞ்சம் தேசத்தில் உண்டாயிற்று; அப்பொழுது ஈசாக்கு பெலிஸ்தருக்கு ராஜாவாகிய அபிமெலேக்கினிடத்தில் கேராருக்குப் போனான்.

1. And there was a famine in the land, besides the former famine, which was in the time of Abraham; and Isaac went to Abimelech the king of the Philistines to Gerar.

2. கர்த்தர் அவனுக்குத் தரிசனமாகி: நீ எகிப்துக்குப் போகாமல், நான் உனக்குச் சொல்லும் தேசத்திலே குடியிரு.

2. And the Lord appeared to him and said, Do not go down to Egypt, but dwell in the land which I shall tell you of.

3. இந்தத் தேசத்திலே வாசம்பண்ணு; நான் உன்னோடேகூட இருந்து, உன்னை ஆசீர்வதிப்பேன்; நான் உனக்கும் உன் சந்ததிக்கும் இந்தத் தேசங்கள் யாவையும் தந்து, உன் தகப்பனாகிய ஆபிரகாமுக்கு நான் இட்ட ஆணையை நிறைவேற்றுவேன்.

3. And sojourn in this land; and I will be with you, and bless you, for I will give to you and to your seed all this land; and I will establish My oath which I swore to your father Abraham.

4. ஆபிரகாம் என் சொல்லுக்குக் கீழ்ப்படிந்து, என் விதிகளையும், என் கற்பனைகளையும், என் நியமங்களையும், என் பிரமாணங்களையும் கைக்கொண்டபடியினால்,

4. And I will multiply your seed as the stars of heaven; and I will give to your seed all this land, and all the nations of the earth shall be blessed in your seed.

5. நான் உன் சந்ததியை வானத்தின் நட்சத்திரங்களைப்போலப் பெருகப்பண்ணி, உன் சந்ததிக்கு இந்தத் தேசங்கள் யாவையும் தருவேன்; உன் சந்ததிக்குள் பூமியிலுள்ள சகல ஜாதிகளும் ஆசீர்வதிக்கப்படும் என்றார்.

5. Because Abraham your father listened to My voice, and kept My injunctions, My commandments, My ordinances, and My statutes.

6. ஈசாக்கு கேராரிலே குடியிருந்தான்.

6. And Isaac dwelt in Gerar.

7. அவ்விடத்து மனிதர்கள் அவன் மனைவியைக்குறித்து விசாரித்தபோது: இவள் என் சகோதரி என்றான். ரெபெக்காள் பார்வைக்கு அழகுள்ளவளானபடியால், அவ்விடத்து மனிதர்கள் அவள்நிமித்தம் தன்னைக் கொல்லுவார்கள் என்று எண்ணி, அவளைத் தன் மனைவி என்று சொல்லப் பயந்தான்.

7. And the men of the place questioned him concerning Rebecca his wife, and he said, She is my sister (for he feared to say, She is my wife, lest at any time the men of the place should kill him because of Rebecca, because she was beautiful).

8. அவன் அங்கே நெடுநாள் தங்கியிருக்கையில், பெலிஸ்தருக்கு ராஜாவாகிய அபிமெலேக்கு ஜன்னல் வழியாய்ப் பார்க்கும்போது, ஈசாக்கு தன் மனைவியாகிய ரெபெக்காளோடே விளையாடிக்கொண்டிருக்கிறதைக் கண்டான்.

8. And he remained there a long time, and Abimelech the king of Gerar leaned to look through the window, and saw Isaac sporting with Rebecca his wife.

9. அபிமெலேக்கு ஈசாக்கை அழைத்து: அவள் உன் மனைவியாயிருக்கிறாளே! பின்னை ஏன் அவளை உன் சகோதரி என்று சொன்னாய் என்றான். அதற்கு ஈசாக்கு: அவள் நிமித்தம் நான் சாகாதபடிக்கு, இப்படிச் சொன்னேன் என்றான்.

9. And Abimelech called Isaac, and said to him, Is she then your wife? Why have you said, She is my sister? And Isaac said to him, [I did so], for I said, Lest at any time I should die on her account.

10. அதற்கு அபிமெலேக்கு: எங்களிடத்தில் ஏன் இப்படிச் செய்தாய்? ஜனங்களுக்குள் யாராகிலும் உன் மனைவியோடே சயனிக்கவும், எங்கள்மேல் பழி சுமரவும் நீ இடமுண்டாக்கினாயே என்றான்.

10. And Abimelech said to him, Why have you done this to us? One of my kindred might soon have lain with your wife, and you would have brought a sin of ignorance upon us.

11. பின்பு, அபிமெலேக்கு: இந்தப் புருஷனையாகிலும் இவன் மனைவியையாகிலும் தொடுகிறவன் நிச்சயமாய்க் கொலைசெய்யப்படுவான் என்று எல்லா ஜனங்களும் அறியச் சொன்னான்.

11. And Abimelech charged all his people, saying, Every man that touches this man and his wife shall be liable to death.

12. ஈசாக்கு அந்தத் தேசத்தில் விதைவிதைத்தான்; கர்த்தர் அவனை ஆசீர்வதித்ததினால் அந்த வருஷத்தில் நூறுமடங்கு பலன் அடைந்தான்;

12. And Isaac sowed in that land, and he found barley in that year, and reaped one hundred fold, and the Lord blessed him.

13. அவன் ஐசுவரியவானாகி, வரவர விருத்தியடைந்து, மகா பெரியவனானான்.

13. And the man prospered, and continued prospering, till he became very great.

14. அவனுக்கு ஆட்டு மந்தையும், மாட்டு மந்தையும், அநேக பணிவிடைக்காரரும் இருந்தபடியினாலே பெலிஸ்தர் அவன் பேரில் பொறாமைகொண்டு,

14. And he had herds of sheep, and herds of oxen, and many tilled lands, and the Philistines envied him.

15. அவன் தகப்பனாகிய ஆபிரகாமின் நாட்களில் அவனுடைய வேலைக்காரர் வெட்டின துரவுகளையெல்லாம் தூர்த்து மண்ணினால் நிரப்பிப்போட்டார்கள்.

15. And all the wells which the servants of his father had dug in the time of his father, the Philistines had stopped them, and filled them with earth.

16. அபிமெலேக்கு ஈசாக்கை நோக்கி: நீ எங்களை விட்டுப் போய்விடு; எங்களைப் பார்க்கிலும் மிகவும் பலத்தவனானாய் என்றான்.

16. And Abimelech said to Isaac, Depart from us, for you have become much greater than us.

17. அப்பொழுது ஈசாக்கு அவ்விடம் விட்டுப் புறப்பட்டு, கேராரின் பள்ளத்தாக்கிலே கூடாரம் போட்டு, அங்கே குடியிருந்து,

17. And Isaac departed from there, and rested in the valley of Gerar, and dwelt there.

18. தன் தகப்பனாகிய ஆபிரகாமின் நாட்களில் வெட்டினவைகளும், ஆபிரகாம் மரித்தபின் பெலிஸ்தர் தூர்த்துப்போட்டவைகளுமான துரவுகளை மறுபடியும் தோண்டி, தன் தகப்பன் அவைகளுக்கு இட்டிருந்த பேர்களின்படியே அவைகளுக்குப் பேரிட்டான்.

18. And Isaac dug again the wells of water, which the servants of his father Abraham had dug, and the Philistines had stopped them up, after the death of his father Abraham; and he gave them names, according to the names by which his father named them.

19. ஈசாக்குடைய வேலைக்காரர் பள்ளத்தாக்கிலே வெட்டி, அங்கே சுரக்கும் நீரூற்றைக் கண்டார்கள்.

19. And the servants of Isaac dug in the valley of Gerar, and they found there a well of living water.

20. கேராரூர் மேய்ப்பர் இந்தத் தண்ணீர் தங்களுடையது என்று சொல்லி, ஈசாக்குடைய மேய்ப்பருடனே வாக்குவாதம்பண்ணினார்கள்; அவர்கள் தன்னோடே வாக்குவாதம் பண்ணினபடியால், அந்தத் துரவுக்கு ஏசேக்கு என்று பேரிட்டான்.

20. And the shepherds of Gerar quarreled with the shepherds of Isaac, saying that the water was theirs; and they called the name of the well, Injury, for they injured him.

21. வேறொரு துரவை வெட்டினார்கள்; அதைக்குறித்தும் வாக்குவாதம்பண்ணினார்கள்; ஆகையால் அதற்கு சித்னா என்று பேரிட்டான்.

21. And having departed from there he dug another well, and they fought also for that; and he named the name of it, Enmity.

22. பின்பு அவ்விடம்விட்டுப் பெயர்ந்துபோய், வேறொரு துரவை வெட்டினான்; அதைக்குறித்து அவர்கள் வாக்குவாதம்பண்ணவில்லை; அப்பொழுது அவன்: நாம் தேசத்தில் பலுகும்படிக்கு, இப்பொழுது கர்த்தர் நமக்கு இடம் உண்டாக்கினார் என்று சொல்லி, அதற்கு ரெகொபோத் என்று பேரிட்டான்.

22. And he departed from there and dug another well; and they did not quarrel about that [one]; and he named the name of it, Room, saying, Because now the Lord has made room for us, and has increased us upon the earth.

23. அங்கேயிருந்து பெயெர்செபாவுக்குப் போனான்.

23. And he went up from there to the Well of the Oath.

24. அன்று ராத்திரியிலே கர்த்தர் அவனுக்குத் தரிசனமாகி: நான் உன் தகப்பனாகிய ஆபிரகாமுடைய தேவன், பயப்படாதே, நான் உன்னோடேகூட இருந்து, என் ஊழியக்காரனாகிய ஆபிரகாமினிமித்தம் உன்னை ஆசீர்வதித்து, உன் சந்ததியைப் பெருகப்பண்ணுவேன் என்றார்.

24. And the Lord appeared to him in that night and said, I am the God of Abraham your father; fear not, for I am with you, and I will bless you, and multiply your seed for the sake of Abraham your father.

25. அங்கே அவன் ஒரு பலிபீடத்தைக் கட்டி, கர்த்தருடைய நாமத்தைத் தொழுதுகொண்டு, அங்கே தன் கூடாரத்தைப் போட்டான். அவ்விடத்தில் ஈசாக்கின் வேலைக்காரர் ஒரு துரவை வெட்டினார்கள்.

25. And he built an altar there, and called on the name of the Lord, and there he pitched his tent, and there the servants of Isaac dug a well in the valley of Gerar.

26. அபிமெலேக்கும் அவன் சிநேகிதனாகிய அகுசாத்தும் அவன் சேனாபதியாகிய பிகோலும், கேராரிலிருந்து அவனிடத்துக்கு வந்தார்கள்.

26. And Abimelech came to him from Gerar, and so did Ahuzzath his friend, and Phichol the commander of his army.

27. அப்பொழுது ஈசாக்கு அவர்களை நோக்கி: ஏன் என்னிடத்தில் வந்தீர்கள்? நீங்கள் என்னைப் பகைத்து, என்னை உங்களிடத்தில் இராதபடிக்குத் துரத்திவிட்டீர்களே என்றான்.

27. And Isaac said to them, Why have you come to me? Seeing [that] you hated me, and sent me away from you.

28. அதற்கு அவர்கள்: நிச்சயமாய் கர்த்தர் உம்மோடேகூட இருக்கிறார் என்று கண்டோம்; ஆகையால் எங்களுக்கும் உமக்கும் ஒரு ஆணை ஏற்பாடு உண்டாகவேண்டும் என்று நாங்கள் நிர்ணயம் பண்ணினோம்.

28. And they said, We have surely seen that the Lord was with you, and we said, Let there be an oath between us and you, and we will make a covenant with you,

29. நாங்கள் உம்மைத் தொடாமல், நன்மையையே உமக்குச் செய்து, உம்மைச் சமாதானத்தோடே அனுப்பிவிட்டதுபோல, நீரும் எங்களுக்குத் தீங்குசெய்யாதபடிக்கு உம்மோடே உடன்படிக்கை பண்ணிக்கொள்ள வந்தோம்; நீர் கர்த்தரால் ஆசீர்வதிக்கப்பட்டவராமே என்றார்கள்.

29. that you shall do us no harm, as we have not abhorred you, and since we have treated you well, and have sent you forth peaceably; and now you are blessed of the Lord.

30. அவன் அவர்களுக்கு விருந்துபண்ணினான், அவர்கள் புசித்துக் குடித்தார்கள்.

30. And he made a feast for them, and they ate and drank.

31. அதிகாலையில் எழுந்து ஒருவருக்கொருவர் ஆணையிட்டுக்கொண்டார்கள். பின்பு ஈசாக்கு அவர்களை அனுப்பிவிட்டான்; அவர்கள் அவனிடத்திலிருந்து சமாதானத்தோடே போய்விட்டார்கள்.

31. And they arose in the morning, and swore each to his neighbor; and Isaac sent them forth, and they departed from him in safety.

32. அந்நாளில்தானே ஈசாக்கின் வேலைக்காரர் வந்து, தாங்கள் துரவு வெட்டின செய்தியை அவனுக்கு அறிவித்து, தண்ணீர் கண்டோம் என்றார்கள்.

32. And it came to pass in that day, that the servants of Isaac came and told him of the well which they had dug; and they said, We have not found water.

33. அதற்கு சேபா என்று பேரிட்டான்; ஆகையால் அந்த ஊரின் பேர் இந்நாள் வரைக்கும் பெயெர்செபா என்னப்படுகிறது.

33. And he called it, Oath: therefore he called the name of that city, the Well of Oath, until this day.

34. ஏசா நாற்பது வயதானபோது, ஏத்தியனான பெயேரியினுடைய குமாரத்தியாகிய யூதீத்தையும், ஏத்தியனான ஏலோனுடைய குமாரத்தியாகிய பஸ்மாத்தையும் விவாகம்பண்ணினான்.

34. And Esau was forty years old; and he took as wives Judith the daughter of Beeri the Hittite, and Basemath, daughter of Elon the Hittite.

35. அவர்கள் ஈசாக்குக்கும் ரெபெக்காளுக்கும் மனநோவாயிருந்தார்கள்.

35. And they were a grief of mind to Isaac and Rebecca.
