1. பூமியிலே போராட மனுஷனுக்குக் குறிக்கப்பட்ட காலம் உண்டல்லவோ? அவன் நாட்கள் ஒரு கூலிக்காரன் நாட்களைப்போல் இருக்கிறதல்லவோ?

1. Is not the life of man upon earth a state of trial? And his existence as that of a hireling by the day?

2. ஒரு வேலையாள் நிழலை வாஞ்சித்து, ஒரு கூலிக்காரன் தன் கூலியை வரப்பார்த்திருக்கிறதுபோல,

2. Or as a servant that fears his master, and one who has grasped a shadow? Or as a hireling waiting for his pay?

3. மாயையான மாதங்கள் என்னுடைய சுதந்தரமாகி, சஞ்சலமான இராத்திரிகள் எனக்குக் குறிக்கப்பட்டது.

3. So have I also endured months of vanity, and nights of pain have been appointed me.

4. நான் படுத்துக்கொள்ளுகிறபோது, எப்பொழுது எழுந்திருப்பேன்? இராக்காலம் எப்பொழுது முடியும் என்று சொல்லி, கிழக்கு வெளுக்குமட்டும் அரண்டு புரளுகிறதினால் எனக்குப் போதுமென்றுபோகிறது.

4. Whenever I lie down, I say, When [will it be] day? And whenever I rise up, again [I say] when [will it be] evening? And I am full of pains from evening to morning.

5. என் மாம்சம் பூச்சிகளினாலும், அடைபற்றின புழுதியினாலும் மூடப்பட்டிருக்கிறது; என் தோல் வெடித்து அருவருப்பாயிற்று.

5. And my body is covered with loathsome worms; and I waste away, scraping off clods of dust from my eruption.

6. என் நாட்கள் நெய்கிறவன் எறிகிற நாடாவிலும் தீவிரமாய் ஓடுகிறது; அவைகள் நம்பிக்கையில்லாமல் முடிந்துபோகும்.

6. And my life is lighter than a word, and has perished in vain hope.

7. என் பிராணன் காற்றைப்போலிருக்கிறதென்றும், என் கண்கள் இனி நன்மையைக் காணப்போகிறதில்லையென்றும் நினைத்தருளும்.

7. Remember then that my life is breath, and my eye shall not yet again see good.

8. இப்போது என்னைக் காண்கிறவர்களின் கண்கள் இனி என்னைக் காண்பதில்லை; உம்முடைய கண்கள் என்மேல் நோக்கமாயிருக்கிறது; நானோ இல்லாமற்போகிறேன்.

8. The eye of him that sees me shall not see me again: your eyes are upon me, and I am no more.

9. மேகம் பறந்துபோகிறதுபோல, பாதாளத்தில் இறங்குகிறவன் இனி ஏறிவரான்.

9. I [am] as a cloud that is cleared away from the sky: for if a man should go down to the grave, he shall not come up again.

10. இனி தன் வீட்டுக்குத் திரும்பான், அவன் ஸ்தலம் இனி அவனை அறியாது.

10. And he shall surely not return to his own house, neither shall his place know him any more.

11. ஆகையால் நான் என் வாயை அடக்காமல், என் ஆவியின் வேதனையினால் பேசி, என் ஆத்துமத்தின் கசப்பினால் அங்கலாய்ப்பேன்.

11. Then neither will I refrain my mouth; I will speak being in distress; being in anguish I will disclose the bitterness of my soul.

12. தேவரீர் என்மேல் காவல் வைக்கிறதற்கு நான் சமுத்திரமோ? நான் ஒரு திமிங்கிலமோ?

12. Am I a sea, or a serpent, that you have set a watch over me?

13. என் கட்டில் எனக்கு ஆறுதல் கொடுக்கும் என்றும், என் படுக்கை என் தவிப்பை ஆற்றும் என்றும் நான் சொல்வேனாகில்,

13. I said that my bed should comfort me, and I would privately counsel with myself on my couch.

14. நீர் சொப்பனங்களால் என்னைக் கலங்கப்பண்ணி, தரிசனங்களால் எனக்குத் திகிலுண்டாக்குகிறீர்.

14. You scare me with dreams, and terrify me with visions.

15. அதினால் என் ஆத்துமா, நெருக்குண்டு சாகிறதையும், என் எலும்புகளோடே உயிரோடிருக்கிறதைப்பார்க்கிலும், மரணத்தையும் விரும்புகிறது.

15. You will separate life from my spirit; and yet [keep] my bones from death.

16. இப்படியிருக்கிறதை அரோசிக்கிறேன்; எந்நாளும் உயிரோடிருக்க விரும்பேன், என்னை விட்டுவிடும்; என் நாட்கள் மாயைதானே.

16. For I shall not live forever, that I should patiently endure: depart from me, for my life is vain.

17. மனுஷனை நீர் ஒரு பொருட்டாக எண்ணுகிறதற்கும், அவன்மேல் சிந்தை வைக்கிறதற்கும்,

17. For what is man, that You have magnified him? Or that You give heed to him?

18. காலைதோறும் அவனை விசாரிக்கிறதற்கும், நிமிஷந்தோறும் அவனைச் சோதிக்கிறதற்கும், அவன் எம்மாத்திரம்?

18. Will You visit him till the morning, and judge him till [the time of] rest?

19. நான் என் உமிழ்நீரை விழுங்காதபடி எத்தனைகாலம் என்னை நெகிழாமலும், என்னை விடாமலும் இருப்பீர்.

19. How long do You not let me alone, nor let me go, until I shall swallow down my spittle?

20. மன்னுயிரைக்காப்பவரே, பாவஞ்செய்தேனானால் உமக்கு நான் செய்யவேண்டியது என்ன? நான் எனக்குத்தானே பாரமாயிருக்கும்படிக்கு, நீர் என்னை உமக்கு இலக்காக வைத்தது என்ன?

20. If I have sinned, what shall I be able to do, O You that understand the mind of men? why have You made me as Your accuser, and why am I a burden to You?

21. என் மீறுதலை நீர் மன்னியாமலும், என் அக்கிரமத்தை நீக்காமலும் இருக்கிறது என்ன? இப்பொழுதே மண்ணில் படுத்துக்கொள்வேன்; விடியற்காலத்திலே என்னைத் தேடுவீரானால் நான் இரேன் என்றான்.

21. Why have You not forgotten my iniquity, and purged my sin? But now I shall depart to the earth, and in the morning I am no more.
