1. அப்பொழுது நாகமாத்தியனான சோப்பார் பிரதியுத்தரமாக:

1. Then Sophar the Naamathite answered, and said:

2. இதற்காக மறு உத்தரவு கொடுக்க என் சிந்தனைகள் என்னை ஏவுகிறபடியால் நான் தீவிரித்துச் சொல்லுகிறேன்.

2. Therefore various thoughts succeed one another in me, and my mind is hurried away to different things.

3. நிந்தித்தேன் என்று நான் கடிந்து கொள்ளப்பட்டதைக் கேட்டேன்; ஆனாலும் உணர்வினால் என் ஆவி பிரதியுத்தரம் சொல்ல என்னை ஏவுகிறது.

3. The doctrine with which thou reprovest me, I will hear, and the spirit of my understanding shall answer for me.

4. துன்மார்க்கனின் கெம்பீரம் குறுகினது என்பதையும், மாயக்காரனின் சந்தோஷம் ஒரு நிமிஷம்மாத்திரம் நிற்கும் என்பதையும்,

4. This I know from the beginning, since man was placed upon the earth,

5. அவர் மனுஷனைப் பூமியில் வைத்த ஆதிகாலமுதல் இப்படியிருக்கிறது என்பதையும் நீர் அறியீரோ?

5. That the praise of the wicked is short, and the joy of the hypocrite but for a moment.

6. அவனுடைய மேன்மை வானபரியந்தம் உயர்ந்தாலும், அவனுடைய தலை மேகங்கள்மட்டும் எட்டினாலும்,

6. If his pride mount up even to heaven, and his head touch the clouds:

7. அவன் தன் மலத்தைப்போல என்றைக்கும் அழிந்துபோவான்; அவனைக் கண்டவர்கள், அவன் எங்கே? என்பார்கள்.

7. In the end he shall be destroyed like a dunghill, and they that has seen him shall say: Where is he?

8. அவன் ஒரு சொப்பனத்தைப்போல் பறந்துபோய்க் காணப்படாதவனாவான்; இரவில் தோன்றும் தரிசனத்தைப்போல் பறக்கடிக்கப்படுவான்.

8. As a dream that fleeth away he shall not be found, he shall pass as a vision of the night:

9. அவனைப் பார்த்த கண் இனி அவனைப் பார்ப்பதில்லை; அவன் இருந்த ஸ்தலம் இனி அவனைக் காண்பதில்லை.

9. The eyes that had seen him, shall see him no more, neither shall his place any more behold him.

10. அவன் பிள்ளைகள் எளிமையானவர்களின் சகாயத்தைத் தேடுவார்கள்; அவன் பறித்ததை அவன் கைகள் திரும்பக் கொடுக்கவேண்டியதாகும்.

10. His children shall be oppressed with want, and his hands shall render him his sorrow.

11. அவன் எலும்புகள் அவனுடைய வாலவயதின் பாவங்களினால் நிறைந்திருந்து, அவனோடேகூட மண்ணிலே படுத்துக்கொள்ளும்.

11. His bones shall be filled with the vices of his youth, and they shall sleep with him in the dust.

12. பொல்லாப்பு அவன் வாயிலே இனிமையாயிருப்பதால், அவன் அதைத் தன் நாவின்கீழ் அடக்கி,

12. For when evil shall be sweet in his mouth, he will hide it under his tongue.

13. அதை விடாமல் பதனம்பண்ணி, தன் வாய்க்குள்ளே வைத்துக்கொண்டிருந்தாலும்,

13. He will spare it, and not leave it, and will hide it in his throat.

14. அவன் போஜனம் அவன் குடல்களில் மாறி, அவனுக்குள் விரியன்பாம்புகளின் பிச்சாய்ப்போகும்.

14. His bread in his belly shall be turned into the gall of asps within him.

15. அவன் விழுங்கின ஆஸ்தியைக் கக்குவான்; தேவன் அதை அவன் வயிற்றிலிருந்து வெளியே தள்ளிவிடுவார்.

15. The riches which he hath swallowed; he shall vomit up, and God shall draw them out of his belly.

16. அவன் விரியன்பாம்புகளின் விஷத்தை உறிஞ்சுவான்; விரியனின் நாக்கு அவனைக் கொல்லும்.

16. He shall suck the head of asps, and the viper's tongue shall kill him.

17. தேனும் நெய்யும் ஓடும் வாய்க்கால்களையும் ஆறுகளையும் அவன் காண்பதில்லை.

17. (Let him not see the streams of the river, the brooks of honey and of butter.)

18. தான் பிரயாசப்பட்டுத் தேடினதை அவன் விழுங்காமல் திரும்பக் கொடுப்பான்; அவன் திரும்பக் கொடுக்கிறது அவன் ஆஸ்திக்குச் சரியாயிருக்கும்; அவன் களிகூராதிருப்பான்.

18. He shall be punished for all that he did, and yet shall not be consumed: according to the multitude of his devices so also shall he suffer.

19. அவன் ஒடுக்கி, ஏழைகளைக் கைவிட்டு, தான் கட்டாத வீட்டைப் பறித்தபடியினாலும்,

19. Because he broke in and stripped the poor: he hath violently taken away a house which he did not build.

20. தன் வயிறு திருப்தியற்றிருந்தபடியினாலும், அவன் இச்சித்த காரியங்களில் அவனுக்கு ஒன்றும் இருப்பதில்லை.

20. And yet his belly was not filled: and when he hath the things he coveted, he shall not be able to possess them.

21. அவன் போஜனத்தில் ஒன்றும் மீதியாவதில்லை; ஆகையால் அவன் ஆஸ்தி நிலைநிற்பதில்லை.

21. There was nothing left of his meat, and therefore nothing shall continue of his goods:

22. அவன் வேண்டுமென்கிற பரிபூரணம் அவனுக்கு வந்தபின், அவனுக்கு வியாகுலம் உண்டாகும்; சிறுமைப்படுகிற ஒவ்வொருவருடைய கையும் அவன்மேல் வரும்.

22. When he shall be filled, he shall be straitened, he shall burn, and every sorrow shall fall upon him.

23. தன் வயிற்றை நிரப்பத்தக்கது இன்னும் அவனுக்கு இருந்தாலும், அவர் அவன்மேல் தமது கோபத்தின் உக்கிரத்தை வரவிட்டு, அவன் போஜனம்பண்ணுகையில், அதை அவன்மேல் சொரியப்பண்ணுவார்.

23. May his belly be filled, that God may send forth the wrath of his indignation upon him, and rain down his war upon him.

24. இருப்பு ஆயுதத்துக்கு அவன் தப்பியோடினாலும் உருக்குவில் அவனை உருவ எய்யும்.

24. He shall flee from weapons of iron, and shall fall upon a bow of brass.

25. உருவின பட்டயம் அவன் சரீரத்தையும், மின்னுகிற அம்பு அவன் பிச்சையும் உருவிப்போகும்; பயங்கரங்கள் அவன்மேல் வரும்.

25. The sword is drawn out, and cometh forth from its scabbard, and glittereth in his bitterness: the terrible ones shall go and come upon him.

26. அவன் ஒளிக்கும் இடங்களில் காரிருள் அடங்கியிருக்கும்; அவியாத அக்கினி அவனைப் பட்சிக்கும்; அவன் கூடாரத்தில் மீதியாயிருக்கிறவன் தீங்கு அநுபவிப்பான்.

26. All darkness is hid in his secret places: a fire that is not kindled shall devour him, he shall be afflicted when left in his tabernacle.

27. வானங்கள் அவன் அக்கிரமத்தை வெளிப்படுத்தி, பூமி அவனுக்கு விரோதமாக எழும்பும்.

27. The heavens shall reveal his iniquity, and the earth shall rise up against him.

28. அவன் வீட்டின் சம்பத்துப் போய்விடும்; அவருடைய கோபத்தின் நாளிலே அவைகள் கரைந்து போகும்.

28. The offspring of his house shall be exposed, he shall be pulled down in the day of God's wrath.

29. இதுவே தேவனால் துன்மார்க்கனுக்குக் கிடைக்கும் பங்கும், அவன் செய்கைக்கு தேவனால் அவனுக்கு வரும் சுதந்தரமுமாம் என்றான்.

29. This is the portion of a wicked man from God, and the inheritance of his doings from the Lord.
