1. Now Jephthah of Gilead was a great warrior. He was the son of Gilead, but his mother was a prostitute.

2. Gilead's wife also had several sons, and when these half brothers grew up, they chased Jephthah off the land. 'You will not get any of our father's inheritance,' they said, 'for you are the son of a prostitute.'

3. So Jephthah fled from his brothers and lived in the land of Tob. Soon he had a band of worthless rebels following him.

4. சிலநாளைக்குப்பின்பு, அம்மோன் புத்திரர் இஸ்ரவேலின்மேல் யுத்தம்பண்ணினார்கள்.

4. At about this time, the Ammonites began their war against Israel.

5. அவர்கள் இஸ்ரவேலின்மேல் யுத்தம்பண்ணும்போது கீலேயாத்தின் மூப்பர் யெப்தாவைத் தோப் தேசத்திலிருந்து அழைத்துவரப்போய்,

5. When the Ammonites attacked, the elders of Gilead sent for Jephthah in the land of Tob. The elders said,

6. யெப்தாவை நோக்கி: நீ வந்து, நாங்கள் அம்மோன் புத்திரரோடு யுத்தம்பண்ண எங்கள் சேனாபதியாயிருக்க வேண்டும் என்றார்கள்.

6. 'Come and be our commander! Help us fight the Ammonites!'

7. அதற்கு யெப்தா கீலேயாத்தின் மூப்பரைப் பார்த்து: நீங்கள் அல்லவா என்னைப் பகைத்து, என் தகப்பன் வீட்டிலிருந்து என்னைத் துரத்தினவர்கள்? இப்பொழுது உங்களுக்கு ஆபத்து நேரிட்டிருக்கிற சமயத்தில் நீங்கள் என்னிடத்தில் ஏன் வருகிறீர்கள் என்றான்.

7. But Jephthah said to them, 'Aren't you the ones who hated me and drove me from my father's house? Why do you come to me now when you're in trouble?'

8. அதற்குக் கீலேயாத்தின் மூப்பர் யெப்தாவை நோக்கி: நீ எங்களுடனேகூட வந்து, அம்மோன் புத்திரரோடு யுத்தம்பண்ணி, கீலேயாத்தின் குடிகளாகிய எங்கள் அனைவர்மேலும் தலைவனாயிருக்க வேண்டும்; இதற்காக இப்பொழுது உன்னிடத்தில் வந்தோம் என்றார்கள்.

8. 'Because we need you,' the elders replied. 'If you lead us in battle against the Ammonites, we will make you ruler over all the people of Gilead.'

9. அதற்கு யெப்தா: அம்மோன் புத்திரரோடே யுத்தம்பண்ண, நீங்கள் என்னைத் திரும்ப அழைத்துப்போனபின்பு, கர்த்தர் அவர்களை என் முன்னிலையாய் ஒப்புக்கொடுத்தால், என்னை உங்களுக்குத் தலைவனாய் வைப்பீர்களா என்று கீலேயாத்தின் மூப்பரைக் கேட்டான்.

9. Jephthah said to the elders, 'Let me get this straight. If I come with you and if the LORD gives me victory over the Ammonites, will you really make me ruler over all the people?'

10. கீலேயாத்தின் மூப்பர் யெப்தாவைப் பார்த்து: நாங்கள் உன் வார்த்தையின்படியே செய்யாவிட்டால், கர்த்தர் நமக்கு நடுநின்று கேட்பாராக என்றார்கள்.

10. 'The LORD is our witness,' the elders replied. 'We promise to do whatever you say.'

11. அப்பொழுது யெப்தா கீலேயாத்தின் மூப்பரோடே கூடப்போனான்; ஜனங்கள் அவனைத் தங்கள்மேல் தலைவனும் சேனாபதியுமாக வைத்தார்கள். யெப்தா தன் காரியங்களையெல்லாம் மிஸ்பாவிலே கர்த்தருடைய சந்நிதியிலே சொன்னான்.

11. So Jephthah went with the elders of Gilead, and the people made him their ruler and commander of the army. At Mizpah, in the presence of the LORD, Jephthah repeated what he had said to the elders.

12. பின்பு யெப்தா அம்மோன் புத்திரரின் ராஜாவினிடத்திற்கு ஸ்தானாபதிகளை அனுப்பி: நீ என் தேசத்தில் எனக்கு விரோதமாக யுத்தம்பண்ண வருகிறதற்கு, எனக்கும் உனக்கும் என்ன வழக்கு இருக்கிறது என்று கேட்கச் சொன்னான்.

12. Then Jephthah sent messengers to the king of Ammon, asking, 'Why have you come out to fight against my land?'

13. The king of Ammon answered Jephthah's messengers, 'When the Israelites came out of Egypt, they stole my land from the Arnon River to the Jabbok River and all the way to the Jordan. Now then, give back the land peaceably.'

14. யெப்தா மறுபடியும் அம்மோன் புத்திரரின் ராஜாவினிடத்திற்கு ஸ்தானாபதிகளை அனுப்பி, அவனுக்குச் சொல்லச் சொன்னதாவது:

14. Jephthah sent this message back to the Ammonite king:

15. யெப்தா சொல்லுகிறது என்னவென்றால்: இஸ்ரவேலர் மோவாபியரின் தேசத்தையாகிலும், அம்மோன் புத்திரரின் தேசத்தையாகிலும் கட்டிக்கொண்டதில்லையே.

15. This is what Jephthah says: Israel did not steal any land from Moab or Ammon.

16. When the people of Israel arrived at Kadesh on their journey from Egypt after crossing the Red Sea,

17. they sent messengers to the king of Edom asking for permission to pass through his land. But their request was denied. Then they asked the king of Moab for similar permission, but he wouldn't let them pass through either. So the people of Israel stayed in Kadesh.

18. 'Finally, they went around Edom and Moab through the wilderness. They traveled along Moab's eastern border and camped on the other side of the Arnon River. But they never once crossed the Arnon River into Moab, for the Arnon was the border of Moab.

19. அப்பொழுது இஸ்ரவேலர் எஸ்போனில் ஆளுகிற சீகோன் என்னும் எமோரியரின் ராஜாவினிடத்திற்கு ஸ்தானாபதிகளை அனுப்பி: நாங்கள் உன் தேசத்து வழியாய் எங்கள் ஸ்தானத்திற்குக் கடந்துபோக இடங்கொடு என்று சொல்லச்சொன்னார்கள்.

19. 'Then Israel sent messengers to King Sihon of the Amorites, who ruled from Heshbon, asking for permission to cross through his land to get to their destination.

20. சீகோன் இஸ்ரவேலரை நம்பாததினால், தன் எல்லையைக் கடந்துபோகிறதற்கு இடங்கொடாமல் தன் ஜனங்களையெல்லாம் கூட்டி, யாகாசிலே பாளயமிறங்கி, இஸ்ரவேலரோடே யுத்தம்பண்ணினான்.

20. But King Sihon didn't trust Israel to pass through his land. Instead, he mobilized his army at Jahaz and attacked them.

21. அப்பொழுது இஸ்ரவேலின் தேவனாகிய கர்த்தர் சீகோனையும் அவனுடைய எல்லா ஜனங்களையும் இஸ்ரவேலரின் கையில் ஒப்புக்கொடுத்தார்; அவர்களை முறிய அடித்தார்கள்; அப்படியே இஸ்ரவேலர் அந்த தேசத்திலே குடியிருந்த எமோரியரின் சீமையையெல்லாம் பிடித்து, அர்னோன் துவக்கி,

21. But the LORD, the God of Israel, gave his people victory over King Sihon. So Israel took control of all the land of the Amorites, who lived in that region,

22. யாபோக்மட்டும், வனாந்தரம் துவக்கி யோர்தான்மட்டும் இருக்கிற எமோரியரின் எல்லையையெல்லாம் சுதந்தரமாய்க் கட்டிக்கொண்டார்கள்.

22. from the Arnon River to the Jabbok River, and from the eastern wilderness to the Jordan.

23. இப்படி இஸ்ரவேலின் தேவனாகிய கர்த்தர் எமோரியரைத் தம்முடைய ஜனமாகிய இஸ்ரவேலுக்கு முன்பாகத் துரத்தியிருக்க, நீர் அந்த தேசத்தைக் கட்டிக்கொள்ளத்தகுமா?

23. 'So you see, it was the LORD, the God of Israel, who took away the land from the Amorites and gave it to Israel. Why, then, should we give it back to you?

24. உம்முடைய தேவனாகிய காமோஸ் உமக்கு முன்பாகத் துரத்துகிறவர்களின் தேசத்தை நீர் கட்டிக்கொள்ளமாட்டீரோ? அப்படியே எங்கள் தேவனாகிய கர்த்தர் எங்களுக்கு முன்பாகத் துரத்துகிறவர்களின் தேசத்தையெல்லாம் நாங்களும் கட்டிக்கொள்ளுகிறோம்.

24. You keep whatever your god Chemosh gives you, and we will keep whatever the LORD our God gives us.

25. மேலும் சிப்போரின் குமாரனாகிய பாலாக் என்னும் மோவாபின் ராஜாவைப்பார்க்கிலும் உமக்கு அதிக நியாயம் உண்டோ? அவன் இஸ்ரவேலோடே எப்போதாகிலும் வழக்காடினானா? எப்போதாகிலும் அவர்களுக்கு விரோதமாக யுத்தம்பண்ணினானா?

25. Are you any better than Balak son of Zippor, king of Moab? Did he try to make a case against Israel for disputed land? Did he go to war against them?

26. இஸ்ரவேலர் எஸ்போனிலும் அதின் கிராமங்களிலும், ஆரோவேரிலும் அதின் கிராமங்களிலும், அர்னோன் நதியருகான எல்லா ஊர்களிலும், முந்நூறு வருஷம் குடியிருக்கையில், இவ்வளவு காலமாய் நீங்கள் அதைத் திருப்பிக்கொள்ளாதே போனதென்ன?

26. 'Israel has been living here for 300 years, inhabiting Heshbon and its surrounding settlements, all the way to Aroer and its settlements, and in all the towns along the Arnon River. Why have you made no effort to recover it before now?

27. நான் உமக்கு விரோதமாய்க் குற்றம் செய்யவில்லை; நீர் எனக்கு விரோதமாய் யுத்தம்பண்ணுகிறதினால் நீர்தான் எனக்கு அநியாயம் செய்கிறீர்; நியாயாதிபதியாகிய கர்த்தர் இன்று இஸ்ரவேல் புத்திரருக்கும் அம்மோன் புத்திரருக்கும் நடுநின்று நியாயம் தீர்க்கக்கடவர் என்று சொல்லி அனுப்பினான்.

27. Therefore, I have not sinned against you. Rather, you have wronged me by attacking me. Let the LORD, who is judge, decide today which of us is right-- Israel or Ammon.'

28. ஆனாலும் அம்மோன் புத்திரரின் ராஜா தனக்கு யெப்தா சொல்லியனுப்பின வார்த்தைகளுக்குச் செவிகொடாதே போனான்.

28. But the king of Ammon paid no attention to Jephthah's message.

29. அப்பொழுது கர்த்தருடைய ஆவி யெப்தாவின்மேல் இறங்கினார்; அவன் கீலேயாத்தையும் மனாசே நாட்டையும் கடந்துபோய், கீலேயாத்திலிருக்கிற மிஸ்பாவுக்கு வந்து, அங்கேயிருந்து அம்மோன் புத்திரருக்கு விரோதமாகப் போனான்.

29. At that time the Spirit of the LORD came upon Jephthah, and he went throughout the land of Gilead and Manasseh, including Mizpah in Gilead, and from there he led an army against the Ammonites.

30. அப்பொழுது யெப்தா கர்த்தருக்கு ஒரு பொருத்தனையைப்பண்ணி: தேவரீர் அம்மோன் புத்திரரை என் கையில் ஒப்புக்கொடுக்கவே ஒப்புக்கொடுத்தால்,

30. And Jephthah made a vow to the LORD. He said, 'If you give me victory over the Ammonites,

31. நான் அம்மோன் புத்திரரிடத்திலிருந்து சமாதானத்தோடே திரும்பி வரும்போது, என் வீட்டு வாசற்படியிலிருந்து எனக்கு எதிர்கொண்டு வருவது எதுவோ அது கர்த்தருக்கு உரியதாகும், அதைச் சர்வாங்கதகனபலியாகச் செலுத்துவேன் என்றான்.

31. I will give to the LORD whatever comes out of my house to meet me when I return in triumph. I will sacrifice it as a burnt offering.'

32. யெப்தா அம்மோன் புத்திரரின்மேல் யுத்தம்பண்ண, அவர்களுக்கு விரோதமாய்ப் புறப்பட்டுப்போனான்; கர்த்தர் அவர்களை அவன் கையில் ஒப்புக்கொடுத்தார்.

32. So Jephthah led his army against the Ammonites, and the LORD gave him victory.

33. அவன் அவர்களை ஆரோவேர் துவக்கி மின்னித்திற்குப் போகுமட்டும், திராட்சத்தோட்டத்து நிலங்கள்வரைக்கும், மகா சங்காரமாய் முறிய அடித்து, இருபது பட்டணங்களைப் பிடித்தான்; இப்படி அம்மோன் புத்திரர் இஸ்ரவேல் புத்திரருக்கு முன்பாகத் தாழ்த்தப்பட்டார்கள்.

33. He crushed the Ammonites, devastating about twenty towns from Aroer to an area near Minnith and as far away as Abel-keramim. In this way Israel defeated the Ammonites.

34. யெப்தா மிஸ்பாவிலிருக்கிற தன் வீட்டுக்கு வருகிறபோது, இதோ, அவன் குமாரத்தி தம்புரு வாசித்து நடனஞ்செய்து, அவனுக்கு எதிர்கொண்டு வந்தாள்; அவள் அவனுக்கு ஒரே பிள்ளையானவள்; அவளையல்லாமல் அவனுக்குக் குமாரனும் இல்லை குமாரத்தியும் இல்லை.

34. When Jephthah returned home to Mizpah, his daughter came out to meet him, playing on a tambourine and dancing for joy. She was his one and only child; he had no other sons or daughters.

35. When he saw her, he tore his clothes in anguish. 'Oh, my daughter!' he cried out. 'You have completely destroyed me! You've brought disaster on me! For I have made a vow to the LORD, and I cannot take it back.'

36. அப்பொழுது அவள்: என் தகப்பனே, நீர் கர்த்தரை நோக்கி உம்முடைய வாயைத் திறந்து பேசினீரல்லவோ? அம்மோன் புத்திரராகிய உம்முடைய சத்துருக்களுக்கு நீதியைச் சரிக்கட்டும் ஜெயத்தைக் கர்த்தர் உமக்குக் கட்டளையிட்டபடியினால், உம்முடைய வாயிலிருந்து புறப்பட்டபடியே எனக்குச் செய்யும் என்றாள்.

36. And she said, 'Father, if you have made a vow to the LORD, you must do to me what you have vowed, for the LORD has given you a great victory over your enemies, the Ammonites.

37. பின்னும் அவள் தன் தகப்பனை நோக்கி: நீர் எனக்கு ஒரு காரியம் செய்யவேண்டும்; நான் மலைகளின்மேல் போய்த்திரிந்து, நானும் என் தோழிமார்களும் என் கன்னிமையினிமித்தம் துக்கங்கொண்டாட, எனக்கு இரண்டு மாதம் தவணைகொடும் என்றாள்.

37. But first let me do this one thing: Let me go up and roam in the hills and weep with my friends for two months, because I will die a virgin.'

38. அதற்கு அவன்: போய்வா என்று அவளை இரண்டு மாதத்திற்கு அனுப்பிவிட்டான்; அவள் தன் தோழிமார்களோடும் கூடப்போய், தன் கன்னிமையினிமித்தம் மலைகளின்மேல் துக்கங்கொண்டாடி,

38. 'You may go,' Jephthah said. And he sent her away for two months. She and her friends went into the hills and wept because she would never have children.

39. இரண்டு மாதம் முடிந்தபின்பு, தன் தகப்பனிடத்திற்குத் திரும்பிவந்தாள்; அப்பொழுது அவன் பண்ணியிருந்த தன் பொருத்தனையின்படி அவளுக்குச் செய்தான்; அவள் புருஷனை அறியாதிருந்தாள்.

39. When she returned home, her father kept the vow he had made, and she died a virgin.So it has become a custom in Israel

40. இதினிமித்தம் இஸ்ரவேலின் குமாரத்திகள் வருஷந்தோறும் போய், நாலு நாள் கீலேயாத்தியனான யெப்தாவின் குமாரத்தியைக்குறித்துப் புலம்புவது இஸ்ரவேலிலே வழக்கமாயிற்று.

40. for young Israelite women to go away for four days each year to lament the fate of Jephthah's daughter.
