1. உஷ்ணகாலத்திலே உறைந்த பனியும், அறுப்புக்காலத்திலே மழையும் தகாததுபோல, மூடனுக்கு மகிமை தகாது.

1. As snow in summer, and as rain in harvest, So honour [is] not comely for a fool.

2. அடைக்கலான் குருவி அலைந்துபோவதுபோலும், தகைவிலான் குருவி பறந்து போவதுபோலும், காரணமில்லாமலிட்ட சாபம் தங்காது.

2. As a bird by wandering, as a swallow by flying, So reviling without cause doth not come.

3. குதிரைக்குச் சவுக்கும், கழுதைக்குக் கடிவாளமும், மூடனுடைய முதுகுக்குப் பிரம்பும் ஏற்றது.

3. A whip is for a horse, a bridle for an ass, And a rod for the back of fools.

4. மூடனுக்கு அவன் மதியீனத்தின்படி மறுஉத்தரவு கொடாதே; கொடுத்தால் நீயும் அவனைப் போலாவாய்.

4. Answer not a fool according to his folly, Lest thou be like to him -- even thou.

5. மூடனுக்கு அவன் மதியீனத்தின்படி மறுஉத்தரவு கொடு; கொடாவிட்டால் அவன் தன் பார்வைக்கு ஞானியாயிருப்பான்.

5. Answer a fool according to his folly, Lest he be wise in his own eyes.

6. மூடன் கையிலே செய்தி அனுப்புகிறவன் தன் கால்களையே தறித்துக்கொண்டு நஷ்டத்தை அடைகிறான்.

6. He is cutting off feet, he is drinking injury, Who is sending things by the hand of a fool.

7. நொண்டியின் கால்கள் குந்திக்குந்தி நடக்கும், அப்படியே மூடரின் வாயிலுள்ள உவமைச்சொல்லும் குந்தும்.

7. Weak have been the two legs of the lame, And a parable in the mouth of fools.

8. மூடனுக்குக் கனத்தைக் கொடுக்கிறவன் கவணிலே கல்லைக்கட்டுகிறவன்போலிருப்பான்.

8. As one who is binding a stone in a sling, So [is] he who is giving honour to a fool.

9. மூடன் வாயில் அகப்பட்ட பழமொழி வெறியன் கையில் அகப்பட்ட முள்ளு.

9. A thorn hath gone up into the hand of a drunkard, And a parable in the mouth of fools.

10. பெலத்தவன் அனைவரையும் நோகப்பண்ணி, மூடனையும் வேலைகொள்ளுகிறான், மீறி நடக்கிறவர்களையும் வேலைகொள்ளுகிறான்.

10. Great [is] the Former of all, And He is rewarding a fool, And is rewarding transgressors.

11. நாயானது தான் கக்கினதைத் தின்னும்படி திரும்புவதுபோல, மூடனும் தன் மூடத்தனத்துக்குத் திரும்புகிறான்.

11. As a dog hath returned to its vomit, A fool is repeating his folly.

12. தன் பார்வைக்கு ஞானியாயிருப்பவனைக் கண்டாயானால், அவனைப்பார்க்கிலும் மூடனைக்குறித்து அதிக நம்பிக்கையாயிருக்கலாம்.

12. Thou hast seen a man wise in his own eyes, More hope of a fool than of him!

13. வழியிலே சிங்கம் இருக்கும், நடுவீதியிலே சிங்கம் இருக்கும் என்று சோம்பேறி சொல்லுவான்.

13. The slothful hath said, 'A lion [is] in the way, A lion [is] in the broad places.'

14. கதவு கீல்முளையில் ஆடுகிறதுபோல, சோம்பேறியும் படுக்கையில் ஆடிக்கொண்டிருக்கிறான்.

14. The door turneth round on its hinge, And the slothful on his bed.

15. சோம்பேறி தன் கையைக் கலத்திலே வைத்து அதைத் தன் வாய்க்குத் திரும்ப எடுக்க வருத்தப்படுகிறான்.

15. The slothful hath hid his hand in a dish, He is weary of bringing it back to his mouth.

16. புத்தியுள்ள மறுஉத்தரவு சொல்லத்தகும் ஏழுபேரைப்பார்க்கிலும் சோம்பேறி தன் பார்வைக்கு அதிக ஞானமுள்ளவன்.

16. Wiser [is] the slothful in his own eyes, Than seven [men] returning a reason.

17. வழியே போகையில் தனக்கடாத வழக்கில் தலையிடுகிறவன் நாயைக் காதைப் பிடித்திழுக்கிறவனைப் போலிருக்கிறான்.

17. Laying hold on the ears of a dog, [Is] a passer-by making himself wrath for strife not his own.

18. கொள்ளிகளையும் அம்புகளையும் சாவுக்கேதுவானவைகளையும் எறிகிற பைத்தியக்காரன் எப்படியிருக்கிறானோ,

18. As [one] pretending to be feeble, Who is casting sparks, arrows, and death,

19. அப்படியே, தனக்கடுத்தவனை வஞ்சித்து: நான் விளையாட்டுக்கல்லவோ செய்தேன் என்று சொல்லுகிற மனுஷனும் இருக்கிறான்.

19. So hath a man deceived his neighbour, And hath said, 'Am not I playing?'

20. விறகில்லாமல் நெருப்பு அவியும்; கோள்சொல்லுகிறவனில்லாமல் சண்டை அடங்கும்.

20. Without wood is fire going out, And without a tale-bearer, contention ceaseth,

21. கரிகள் தழலுக்கும், விறகு நெருப்புக்கும் ஏதுவானதுபோல, வாதுப்பிரியன் சண்டைகளை மூட்டுகிறதற்கு ஏதுவானவன்.

21. Coal to burning coals, and wood to fire, And a man of contentions to kindle strife.

22. கோள்காரனுடைய வார்த்தைகள் விளையாட்டுப் போலிருக்கும்; ஆனாலும் அவைகள் உள்ளத்திற்குள் தைக்கும்.

22. The words of a tale-bearer [are] as self-inflicted wounds, And they have gone down [to] the inner parts of the heart.

23. நேச அனலைக் காண்பிக்கிற உதடுகளோடு கூடிய தீயநெஞ்சம் வெள்ளிப்பூச்சு பூசிய ஓட்டைப்போலிருக்கும்.

23. Silver of dross spread over potsherd, [Are] burning lips and an evil heart.

24. பகைஞன் தன் உள்ளத்தில் கபடத்தை மறைத்து, தன் உதடுகளினால் சூதுபேசுகிறான்.

24. By his lips doth a hater dissemble, And in his heart he placeth deceit,

25. அவன் இதம்பேசினாலும் அவனை நம்பாதே; அவன் இருதயத்தில் ஏழு அருவருப்புகள் உண்டு.

25. When his voice is gracious trust not in him, For seven abominations [are] in his heart.

26. பகையை வஞ்சகமாய் மறைத்து வைக்கிறவனெவனோ, அவனுடைய பொல்லாங்கு மகா சபையிலே வெளிப்படுத்தப்படும்.

26. Hatred is covered by deceit, Revealed is its wickedness in an assembly.

27. படுகுழியை வெட்டுகிறவன் தானே அதில் விழுவான்; கல்லைப் புரட்டுகிறவன்மேல் அந்தக் கல் திரும்ப விழும்.

27. Whoso is digging a pit falleth into it, And the roller of a stone, to him it turneth.

28. கள்ளநாவு தன்னால் கிலேசப்பட்டவர்களைப் பகைக்கும்; இச்சகம் பேசும் வாய் அழிவை உண்டுபண்ணும்.

28. A lying tongue hateth its bruised ones, And a flattering mouth worketh an overthrow!
