1. பிரிந்து போகிறவன் தன் இச்சையின்படி செய்யப்பார்க்கிறான், எல்லா ஞானத்திலும் தலையிட்டுக் கொள்ளுகிறான்.

1. For [an object of] desire he who is separated doth seek, With all wisdom he intermeddleth.

2. மூடன் ஞானத்தில் பிரியங்கொள்ளாமல், தன் மனதிலுள்ளவைகளை வெளிப்படுத்தப் பிரியப்படுகிறான்.

2. A fool delighteth not in understanding, But -- in uncovering his heart.

3. துன்மார்க்கன் வர அவமானம் வரும்; அவமானத்தோடே நிந்தையும் வரும்.

3. With the coming of the wicked come also hath contempt, And with shame -- reproach.

4. மனுஷனுடைய வாய்மொழிகள் ஆழமான ஜலம்போலிருக்கும்; ஞானத்தின் ஊற்று பாய்கிற ஆற்றைப்போலிருக்கும்.

4. Deep waters [are] the words of a man's mouth, The fountain of wisdom [is] a flowing brook.

5. வழக்கிலே நீதிமானைத் தோற்கடிக்கிறதற்கு, துன்மார்க்கனுக்கு முகதாட்சிணியம்பண்ணுவது நல்லதல்ல.

5. Acceptance of the face of the wicked [is] not good, To turn aside the righteous in judgment.

6. மூடனுடைய உதடுகள் விவாதத்தில் நுழையும், அவன் வாய் அடிகளை வரவழைக்கும்.

6. The lips of a fool enter into strife, And his mouth for stripes calleth.

7. மூடனுடைய வாய் அவனுக்குக் கேடு, அவன் உதடுகள் அவன் ஆத்துமாவுக்குக் கண்ணி.

7. The mouth of a fool [is] ruin to him, And his lips [are] the snare of his soul.

8. கோள்காரனுடைய வார்த்தைகள் விளையாட்டுப்போலிருக்கும், ஆனாலும் அவைகள் உள்ளத்திற்குள் தைக்கும்.

8. The words of a tale-bearer [are] as self-inflicted wounds, And they have gone down [to] the inner parts of the heart.

9. தன் வேலையில் அசதியாயிருப்பவன் அழிம்பனுக்குச் சகோதரன்.

9. He also that is remiss in his work, A brother he [is] to a destroyer.

10. கர்த்தரின் நாமம் பலத்த துருகம்; நீதிமான் அதற்குள் ஓடிச் சுகமாயிருப்பான்.

10. A tower of strength [is] the name of Jehovah, Into it the righteous runneth, and is set on high.

11. ஐசுவரியவானுடைய பொருள் அவனுக்கு அரணான பட்டணம்; அது அவன் எண்ணத்தில் உயர்ந்த மதில்போலிருக்கும்.

11. The wealth of the rich [is] the city of his strength, And as a wall set on high in his own imagination.

12. அழிவு வருமுன் மனுஷனுடைய இருதயம் இறுமாப்பாயிருக்கும்; மேன்மைக்கு முன்னானது தாழ்மை.

12. Before destruction the heart of man is high, And before honour [is] humility.

13. காரியத்தைக் கேட்குமுன் உத்தரம் சொல்லுகிறவனுக்கு, அது புத்தியீனமும் வெட்கமுமாயிருக்கும்.

13. Whoso is answering a matter before he heareth, Folly it is to him and shame.

14. மனுஷனுடைய ஆவி அவன் பலவீனத்தைத் தாங்கும்; முறிந்த ஆவி யாரால் தாங்கக்கூடும்?

14. The spirit of a man sustaineth his sickness, And a smitten spirit who doth bear?

15. புத்திமானுடைய மனம் அறிவைச் சம்பாதிக்கும்; ஞானியின் செவி அறிவை நாடும்.

15. The heart of the intelligent getteth knowledge, And the ear of the wise seeketh knowledge.

16. ஒருவன் கொடுக்கும் வெகுமதி அவனுக்கு வழியுண்டாக்கி, பெரியோர்களுக்கு முன்பாக அவனைக் கொண்டுபோய்விடும்.

16. The gift of a man maketh room for him, And before the great it leadeth him.

17. தன் வழக்கிலே முதல் பேசுகிறவன் நீதிமான்போல் காணப்படுவான்; அவன் அயலானோ வந்து அவனை பரிசோதிக்கிறான்.

17. Righteous [is] the first in his own cause, His neighbour cometh and hath searched him.

18. சீட்டுப்போடுதல் விரோதங்களை ஒழித்து, பலவான்கள் நடுவே சிக்கறுக்கும்.

18. The lot causeth contentions to cease, And between the mighty it separateth.

19. அரணான பட்டணத்தை வசப்படுத்துவதைப்பார்க்கிலும் கோபங்கொண்ட சகோதரனை வசப்படுத்துவது அரிது; அவர்களுடைய விரோதங்கள் கோட்டைத் தாழ்ப்பாள்கள் போலிருக்கும்.

19. A brother transgressed against is as a strong city, And contentions as the bar of a palace.

20. அவனவன் வாயின் பலனால் அவனவன் வயிறு நிரம்பும்; அவனவன் உதடுகளின் விளைவினால் அவனவன் திருப்தியாவான்.

20. From the fruit of a man's mouth is his belly satisfied, [From the] increase of his lips he is satisfied.

21. மரணமும் ஜீவனும் நாவின் அதிகாரத்திலிருக்கும்; அதில் பிரியப்படுகிறவர்கள் அதின் கனியைப் புசிப்பார்கள்.

21. Death and life [are] in the power of the tongue, And those loving it eat its fruit.

22. மனைவியைக் கண்டடைகிறவன் நன்மையானதைக் கண்டடைகிறான்; கர்த்தரால் தயையும் பெற்றுக்கொள்ளுகிறான்.

22. [Whoso] hath found a wife hath found good, And bringeth out good-will from Jehovah.

23. தரித்திரன் கெஞ்சிக்கேட்கிறான்; ஐசுவரியவான் கடினமாய் உத்தரவுகொடுக்கிறான்.

23. [With] supplications doth the poor speak, And the rich answereth fierce things.

24. சிநேகிதருள்ளவன் சிநேகம் பாராட்டவேண்டும்; சகோதரனிலும் அதிக சொந்தமாய்ச் சிநேகிப்பவனுமுண்டு.

24. A man with friends [is] to show himself friendly, And there is a lover adhering more than a brother!
