1. தீர்க்கதரிசிகளின் புத்திரர் எலிசாவை நோக்கி: இதோ, நாங்கள் உம்முடன் குடியிருக்கிற இந்த இடம் எங்களுக்கு நெருக்கமாய் இருக்கிறது.

1. And the sons of the prophets said unto Elisha, See, we pray thee, the place wherein we sit before thee, is too strait for us.

2. நாங்கள் யோர்தான்மட்டும்போய் அவ்விடத்தில் ஒவ்வொருவர் ஒவ்வொரு உத்திரத்தை வெட்டி, குடியிருக்க அங்கே எங்களுக்கு ஒரு இடத்தை உண்டாக்குவோம் என்றார்கள். அதற்கு அவன்: போங்கள் என்றான்.

2. Let us go, we pray thee, as far as the Jordan, and fetch from thence every man a single beam, and let us make us a place wherein we may sit. And he said Go ye.

3. அவர்களில் ஒருவன்: நீர் தயவுசெய்து உமது அடியாரோடேகூட வரவேண்டும் என்றான். அதற்கு அவன்: நான் வருகிறேன் என்று சொல்லி,

3. Then said one Be content, we pray thee, and go with thy servants. And he said I myself, will go.

4. அவர்களோடேகூடப் போனான்; அவர்கள் யோர்தான் நதியருகே வந்தபோது மரங்களை வெட்டினார்கள்.

4. So he went with them, and, when they came to the Jordan, they cut down wood.

5. ஒருவன் ஒரு உத்திரத்தை வெட்டி விழுத்துகையில் கோடரி தண்ணீரில் விழுந்தது; அவன்: ஐயோ என் ஆண்டவனே, அது இரவலாக வாங்கப்பட்டதே என்று கூவினான்.

5. And it came to pass, as one was felling a branch, that, the axe-head, fell into the water, so he made outcry and said Alas! my lord, for, it, was borrowed!

6. தேவனுடைய மனுஷன் அது எங்கே விழுந்தது என்று கேட்டான்; அவன் அந்த இடத்தைக் காண்பித்தபோது, ஒரு கொம்பை வெட்டி, அதை அங்கே எறிந்து, அந்த இரும்பை மிதக்கப்பண்ணி,

6. And the man of God said Where fell it? And he shewed him the place. And he cut down a piece of wood and cast it in thither, and the iron did swim.

7. அதை எடுத்துக்கொள் என்றான்; அப்படியே அவன் தன் கையை நீட்டி அதை எடுத்துக்கொண்டான்.

7. And he said Take it up to thee. So he put forth his hand, and took it.

8. அக்காலத்தில் சீரியாவின் ராஜா இஸ்ரவேலுக்கு விரோதமாய் யுத்தம்பண்ணி, இன்ன இன்ன ஸ்தலத்திலே பாளயமிறங்குவேன் என்று தன் ஊழியக்காரரோடே ஆலோசனைபண்ணினான்.

8. Now, the king of Syria, was making war against Israel, so he took counsel with his servants, saying In such and such a place, shall be my encampment.

9. ஆகிலும் தேவனுடைய மனுஷன் இஸ்ரவேலின் ராஜாவினிடத்தில் ஆள் அனுப்பி: இன்ன இடத்துக்குப் போகாதபடிக்கு எச்சரிக்கையாயிரும்; சீரியர் அங்கே இறங்குவார்கள் என்று சொல்லச்சொன்னான்.

9. The man of God, therefore, sent unto the king of Israel, saying Beware of passing by this place, for, thither, are the Syrians coming down.

10. அப்பொழுது இஸ்ரவேலின் ராஜா தேவனுடைய மனுஷன் தன்னை எச்சரித்து, தனக்குக் குறித்துச்சொன்ன ஸ்தலத்திற்கு மனுஷரை அனுப்பிப்பார்த்து எச்சரிக்கையாயிருந்து, இப்படி அநேகந்தரம் தன்னைக் காத்துக்கொண்டான்.

10. So the king of Israel sent unto the place whereof the man of God had spoken to him and warned him, and was on his guard there, not once nor twice

11. இந்தக் காரியத்தினிமித்தம் சீரிய ராஜாவின் இருதயம் குழம்பி, அவன் தன் ஊழியக்காரரை அழைத்து: நம்முடையவர்களில் இஸ்ரவேலின் ராஜாவுக்கு உளவாயிருக்கிறவன் யார் என்று நீங்கள் எனக்கு அறிவிக்கமாட்டீர்களா என்று கேட்டான்.

11. Then was the heart of the king of Syria disquieted concerning this thing, and he called his servants, and said unto them, Will ye not tell me, who of our men are for the king of Israel?

12. அப்பொழுது அவன் ஊழியக்காரரில் ஒருவன்: அப்படியில்லை; என் ஆண்டவனாகிய ராஜாவே, நீர் உம்முடைய பள்ளி அறையிலே பேசுகிற வார்த்தைகளையும் இஸ்ரவேலிலிருக்கிற தீர்க்கதரிசியாகிய எலிசா இஸ்ரவேலின் ராஜாவுக்கு அறிவிப்பான் என்றான்.

12. Then said one of his servants, None, my lord O king, but, Elisha, the prophet, who is in Israel, telleth the king of Israel the words which thou speakest in thy bed-chamber.

13. அப்பொழுது அவன்: நான் மனுஷரை அனுப்பி அவனைப் பிடிக்கும்படி, நீங்கள் போய் அவன் எங்கே இருக்கிறான் என்று பாருங்கள் என்றான்; அவன் தோத்தானில் இருக்கிறான் என்று அவனுக்கு அறிவிக்கப்பட்டது.

13. And he said Go, and see where he is, that I may send and take him. And it was told him, saying Lo! in Dothan.

14. அப்பொழுது அவன் அங்கே குதிரைகளையும் இரதங்களையும் பலத்த இராணுவத்தையும் அனுப்பினான்; அவர்கள் இராக்காலத்திலே வந்து பட்டணத்தை வளைந்துகொண்டார்கள்.

14. Therefore sent he thither horses and chariots, and a strong force, and they came in by night, and encompassed the city.

15. தேவனுடைய மனுஷனின் வேலைக்காரன் அதிகாலமே எழுந்து வெளியே புறப்படுகையில், இதோ, இராணுவமும் குதிரைகளும் இரதங்களும் பட்டணத்தைச் சுற்றிக்கொண்டிருக்கக் கண்டான்; அப்பொழுது வேலைக்காரன் அவனை நோக்கி: ஐயோ, என் ஆண்டவனே, என்னசெய்வோம் என்றான்.

15. And, when the attendant of the man of God arose early and went forth, lo! a force surrounding the city, with horses and chariots. Then said his young man unto him Alas! my lord, what shall we do?

16. அதற்கு அவன்: பயப்படாதே; அவர்களோடிருக்கிறவர்களைப்பார்க்கிலும் நம்மோடிருக்கிறவர்கள் அதிகம் என்றான்.

16. And he said Do not fear, for, more, are, they who are with us, than, they who are with them.

17. அப்பொழுது எலிசா விண்ணப்பம்பண்ணி: கர்த்தாவே, இவன் பார்க்கும்படி இவன் கண்களைத் திறந்தருளும் என்றான்; உடனே கர்த்தர் அந்த வேலைக்காரன் கண்களைத் திறந்தார்; இதோ, எலிசாவைச்சுற்றிலும் அக்கினிமயமான குதிரைகளாலும் இரதங்களாலும் அந்த மலை நிறைந்திருக்கிறதை அவன் கண்டான்.

17. Then prayed Elisha, and said, O Yahweh! open, I beseech thee, his eyes, that he may see. And Yahweh opened the eyes of the young man, and he saw, and lo! the mountain was full of horses and chariots of fire, round about Elisha.

18. அவர்கள் அவனிடத்தில் வருகையில், எலிசா கர்த்தரை நோக்கி விண்ணப்பம்பண்ணி: இந்த ஜனங்களுக்குக் கண்மயக்கம் உண்டாகும்படி செய்யும் என்றான்; எலிசாவுடைய வார்த்தையின்படியே அவர்களுக்குக் கண்மயக்கம் உண்டாகும்படி செய்தார்.

18. And, when they came down to him, Elisha prayed unto Yahweh, and said Smite, I beseech thee, this people, with sudden blindness. And he smote them with sudden blindness, according to the word of Elisha.

19. அப்பொழுது எலிசா அவர்களை நோக்கி: இது வழி அல்ல; இது பட்டணமும் அல்ல; என் பிறகே வாருங்கள்; நீங்கள் தேடுகிற மனுஷனிடத்தில் நான் உங்களை வழிநடத்துவேன் என்று சொல்லி, அவர்களைச் சமாரியாவுக்கு அழைத்துக் கொண்டுபோனான்.

19. Then Elisha said unto them This, is not the way, neither is, this, the city, follow me, that I may lead you unto the man, whom ye would secure! So he led them to Samaria.

20. அவர்கள் சமாரியாவில் வந்தபோது, எலிசா: கர்த்தாவே, இவர்கள் பார்க்கும்படிக்கு இவர்கள் கண்களைத் திறந்தருளும் என்றான்; பார்க்கும்படிக்குக் கர்த்தர் அவர்கள் கண்களைத் திறக்கும்போது, இதோ, இவர்கள் சமாரியாவின் நடுவே இருந்தார்கள்.

20. And it came to pass, when they had entered Samaria, that Elisha said, O Yahweh! open the eyes of these men, that they may see! And Yahweh opened their eyes, and they saw, and lo! they were in the midst of Samaria!

21. இஸ்ரவேலின் ராஜா அவர்களைக் கண்டபோது, எலிசாவைப் பார்த்து: என் தகப்பனே, நான் அவர்களை வெட்டிப்போடலாமா என்று கேட்டான்.

21. Then said the king of Israel unto Elisha, when he saw them, Shall I smite shall I smite, my father?

22. அதற்கு அவன்: நீர் வெட்டவேண்டாம்; நீர் உம்முடைய பட்டயத்தாலும், உம்முடைய வில்லினாலும் சிறையாக்கிக்கொண்டவர்களை வெட்டுகிறீரோ? இவர்கள் புசித்துக் குடித்து, தங்கள் ஆண்டவனிடத்துக்குப் போகும்படிக்கு, அப்பமும் தண்ணீரும் அவர்களுக்கெதிரில் வையும் என்றான்.

22. And he said Thou shalt not smite. Them whom thou hadst taken captive with thy sword and with thy bow, wouldst, thou, have been smiting? Set bread and water before them, that they may eat and drink, and go their way unto their lord.

23. அப்பொழுது அவர்களுக்குப் பெரிய விருந்துபண்ணி, அவர்கள் புசித்துக்குடித்தபின்பு, அவர்களை அனுப்பிவிட்டான்; அவர்கள் தங்கள் ஆண்டவனிடத்துக்குப் போய்விட்டார்கள்; சீரியரின் தண்டுகள் இஸ்ரவேல் தேசத்திலே அப்புறம் வரவில்லை.

23. And he made for them a great feast, and, when they had eaten and drunk, he let them go, and they went their way unto their lord. So then, troops of Syrians came again, no more, into the land of Israel.

24. இதற்குப்பின்பு சீரியாவின் ராஜாவாகிய பெனாதாத் தன் இராணுவத்தையெல்லாம் கூட்டிக்கொண்டுவந்து சமாரியாவை முற்றிக்கைபோட்டான்.

24. But it came to pass, after this, that Ben-hadad king of Syria gathered together all his host, and came up and laid siege against Samaria.

25. அதினால் சமாரியாவிலே கொடிய பஞ்சமுண்டாயிற்று; ஒரு கழுதைத் தலை எண்பது வெள்ளிக்காசுக்கும், புறாக்களுக்குப் போடுகிற காற்படி பயறு ஐந்து வெள்ளிக்காசுக்கும் விற்கப்படுமட்டும் அதை முற்றிக்கைபோட்டார்கள்.

25. And there came to be, a great famine, in Samaria, and lo! they continued the siege against it, until an ass's head was sold for eighty pieces of silver, and one pint of dove's dung for five pieces of silver.

26. இஸ்ரவேலின் ராஜா அலங்கத்தின்மேல் நடந்துபோகையில், ஒரு ஸ்திரீ அவனைப்பார்த்துக் கூப்பிட்டு, ராஜாவாகிய என் ஆண்டவனே, இரட்சியும் என்றாள்.

26. And so it was that, as the king of Israel was passing by on the wall, a woman, made outcry unto him, saying Save, my lord, O king!

27. அதற்கு அவன்: கர்த்தர் உன்னை இரட்சிக்காதிருந்தால் நான் எதிலிருந்து எடுத்து உன்னை இரட்சிக்கலாம்? களஞ்சியத்திலிருந்தா, ஆலையிலிருந்தா என்று சொல்லி,

27. And he said If Yahweh do not save thee, whence should I save thee? out of the threshing-floor or out of the wine-press?

28. ராஜா பின்னையும் அவளைப் பார்த்து: உனக்கு என்னவேண்டும் என்று கேட்டான். அதற்கு அவள்: இந்த ஸ்திரீ என்னை நோக்கி: உன் மகனைத் தா, அவனை இன்று தின்போம்; நாளைக்கு என் மகனைத் தின்போம் என்றாள்.

28. And the king said to her What aileth thee? And she said This woman, said unto me Give thy son, that we may eat him, to-day, and, my son, will we eat to-morrow.

29. அப்படியே என் மகனை ஆக்கித் தின்றோம்; மறுநாளில் நான் இவளை நோக்கி: நாம் உன் மகனைத் தின்ன அவனைத் தா என்றேன்; அவள் தன் மகனை ஒளித்து விட்டாள் என்றாள்.

29. So we cooked my son, and did eat him, and I said unto her, on the next day, Give thy son, that we may eat him; But she had hid her son.

30. அந்த ஸ்திரீயின் வார்த்தைகளை ராஜா கேட்டவுடனே, அலங்கத்தின்மேல் நடந்துபோகிற அவன் தன் வஸ்திரங்களைக் கிழித்துக்கொண்டான்; அவன் உள்ளே தன் சரீரத்தின்மேல் இரட்டு உடுத்தியிருக்கிறதை ஜனங்கள் கண்டார்கள்.

30. And it came to pass, when the king heard the words of the woman, that he rent his clothes, while yet he was passing by upon the wall, so the people looked, and lo! sackcloth upon his flesh, within.

31. அவன்: சாப்பாத்தின் குமாரனாகிய எலிசாவின் தலை இன்றைக்கு அவன்மேல் இருந்தால், தேவன் அதற்குச் சரியாகவும் அதற்கு அதிகமாகவும் எனக்குச் செய்யக்கடவர் என்று சொன்னான்.

31. And he said So, let God do to me, and, so, let him add, if the head of Elisha son of Shaphat remain on him, to-day!

32. எலிசா தன் வீட்டில் உட்கார்ந்திருந்தான்; மூப்பரும் அவனோடு உட்கார்ந்திருந்தார்கள். அப்பொழுது ராஜா: ஒரு மனுஷனைத் தனக்கு முன்னே அனுப்பினான்; இந்த ஆள் எலிசாவினிடத்துக்கு வருமுன்னே, அவன் அந்த மூப்பரை நோக்கி: என் தலையை வாங்க, அந்தக் கொலைபாதகனுடைய மகன் ஆள் அனுப்பினான்; பார்த்தீர்களா? அந்த ஆள் வரும்போது, நீங்கள் அவனை உள்ளே வரவொட்டாமல் கதவைப் பூட்டிப்போடுங்கள்; அவனுக்குப் பின்னாக அவன் ஆண்டவனுடைய காலின் சத்தம் கேட்கிறது அல்லவா என்றான்.

32. Now, Elisha, being seated in his house, and, the elders, seated with him, when he had sent a man from before him, ere yet the messenger could come in unto him, he himself, said unto the elders Do ye see how this son of a murderer hath sent to take away my head? See! when the messenger is coming in, close ye the door, and press him back with the door, is not the sound of his lord's feet behind him?

33. அவர்களோடே அவன் பேசிக்கொண்டிருக்கையில், அந்த ஆள் அவனிடத்தில் வந்து: இதோ, இந்தப் பொல்லாப்பு கர்த்தரால் உண்டானது; நான் இனிக் கர்த்தருக்காகக் காத்திருக்க வேண்டியது என்ன என்று ராஜா சொல்லுகிறார் என்றான்.

33. While yet he was speaking with them, lo! the messenger, coming down unto him, and he said, Lo! this, is a calamity from Yahweh, why should I wait for Yahweh, any longer?
