1. தாவீது ராமாவுக்கடுத்த நாயோதிலிருந்து ஓடிப்போய், யோனத்தான் முன்பாக வந்து: உம்முடைய தகப்பன் என் பிராணனை வாங்கத் தேடுகிறாரே, நான் செய்தது என்ன? என் அக்கிரமம் என்ன? நான் அவருக்குச் செய்த துரோகம் என்ன? என்றான்.

1. And David fled from Naioth in Ramah, and came and said before Jonathan, What have I done? what is mine iniquity? and what is my sin before thy father, that he seeketh my life?

2. அதற்கு அவன்: அப்படி ஒருக்காலும் வாராது; நீர் சாவதில்லை, இதோ, எனக்கு அறிவிக்காமல் என் தகப்பன் பெரிய காரியமானாலும், சிறிய காரியமானாலும் ஒன்றும் செய்கிறதில்லை; இந்தக் காரியத்தை என் தகப்பன் எனக்கு மறைப்பானேன்? அப்படி இருக்கமாட்டாது என்றான்.

2. And he said unto him, God forbid; thou shalt not die: behold, my father doeth nothing either great or small, but that he discloseth it unto me: and why should my father hide this thing from me? it is not so.

3. அப்பொழுது தாவீது: உம்முடைய கண்களில் எனக்குத் தயை கிடைத்தது என்று உம்முடைய தகப்பன் நன்றாய் அறிவார்; ஆகையால் யோனத்தானுக்கு மனநோவு உண்டாகாதபடிக்கு அவன் இதை அறியப்போகாது என்பார்; மரணத்திற்கும் எனக்கும் ஒரு அடி தூரமாத்திரம் இருக்கிறது என்று கர்த்தருடைய ஜீவனையும் உம்முடைய ஜீவனையும் கொண்டு நிச்சயமாய்ச் சொல்லுகிறேன் என்று மறுமொழி சொல்லி ஆணையிட்டான்.

3. And David sware moreover, and said, Thy father knoweth well that I have found grace in thine eyes; and he saith, Let not Jonathan know this, lest he be grieved: but truly as the LORD liveth, and as thy soul liveth, there is but a step between me and death.

4. அப்பொழுது யோனத்தான் தாவீதைப் பார்த்து: உமது மனவிருப்பம் இன்னது என்று சொல்லும், அதின்படி உமக்குச் செய்வேன் என்றான்.

4. Then said Jonathan unto David, Whatsoever thy soul desireth, I will even do it for thee.

5. தாவீது யோனத்தானை நோக்கி: இதோ, நாளைக்கு அமாவாசி, நான் ராஜாவோடே பந்தியிருந்து சாப்பிடவேண்டியதாயிருக்கும்; ஆனாலும் நான் மூன்றாம் நாள் சாயங்காலமட்டும் வெளியிலே ஒளித்திருக்கும்படி எனக்கு உத்தரவு கொடும்.

5. And David said unto Jonathan, Behold, tomorrow is the new moon, and I should not fail to sit with the king at meat: but let me go, that I may hide myself in the field unto the third day at even.

6. உம்முடைய தகப்பன் என்னைக்குறித்து விசாரித்தால், தன் ஊராகிய பெத்லகேமிலே தன் குடும்பத்தார் யாவரும் வருஷத்துக்கு ஒருதரம் பலியிட வருகிறபடியால் தாவீது அவ்விடத்திற்குப் போக என்னிடத்தில் வருந்திக் கேட்டான் என்று நீர் சொல்லும்.

6. If thy father miss me at all, then say, David earnestly asked leave of me that he might run to Bethlehem his city: for it is the yearly sacrifice there for all the family.

7. அதற்கு அவர் நல்லது என்றால், உம்முடைய அடியானுக்குச் சமாதானம் இருக்கும்; அவருக்கு எரிச்சலுண்டானால், அவராலே பொல்லாப்புத் தீர்மானப்பட்டிருக்கிறது என்று அறிந்துகொள்வீர்.

7. If he say thus, It is well; thy servant shall have peace: but if he be wroth, then know that evil is determined by him.

8. ஆகையால் உம்முடைய அடியானுக்குத் தயை செய்யவேண்டும்; கர்த்தருக்கு முன்பாக உம்முடைய அடியானோடே உடன்படிக்கை பண்ணியிருக்கிறீரே; என்னில் ஒரு அக்கிரமம் இருந்ததேயானால், நீரே என்னைக் கொன்றுபோடும்; நீர் என்னை உம்முடைய தகப்பனிடத்துக்குக் கொண்டு போகவேண்டியது என்ன என்றான்.

8. Therefore deal kindly with thy servant; for thou hast brought thy servant into a covenant of the LORD with thee: but if there be in me iniquity, slay me thyself; for why shouldest thou bring me to thy father?

9. அப்பொழுது யோனத்தான்: அப்படி உமக்கு வராதிருப்பதாக; உமக்குப் பொல்லாப்புச் செய்ய என் தகப்பனாலே தீர்மானித்திருக்கிறது என்று நான் நிச்சயமாய் அறிந்தேனானால் நான் அதை உமக்கு அறிவிக்காதிருப்பேனா என்றான்.

9. And Jonathan said, Far be it from thee: for if I should at all know that evil were determined by my father to come upon thee, then would not I tell it thee?

10. தாவீது யோனத்தானை நோக்கி: உம்முடைய தகப்பன் கடினமான உத்தரம் சொன்னால் அதை யார் எனக்கு அறிவிப்பார் என்றான்.

10. Then said David to Jonathan, Who shall tell me if perchance thy father answer thee roughly?

11. அப்பொழுது யோனத்தான் தாவீதைப் பார்த்து: ஊருக்கு வெளியே போவோம் வாரும் என்றான்; இருவரும் வெளியே புறப்பட்டுப்போனார்கள்.

11. And Jonathan said unto David, Come and let us go out into the field. And they went out both of them into the field.

12. அப்பொழுது யோனத்தான் இஸ்ரவேலின் தேவனாகிய கர்த்தரை முன்னிட்டுத் தாவீதை நோக்கி: நான் நாளையாவது மறுநாளிலாவது என் தகப்பனுடைய மனதை அறிந்துகொண்டு, அவர் தாவீதின்மேல் தயவாயிருக்கிறார் என்று கண்டும், அதை அப்போது உமது செவிகளுக்கு வெளிப்படுத்தும்படிக்கு, உமக்குச் சொல்லியனுப்பாதிருந்தால்,

12. And Jonathan said unto David, The LORD, the God of Israel, {cf15i be witness}; when I have sounded my father about this time tomorrow, {cf15i or} the third day, behold, if there be good toward David, shall I not then send unto thee, and disclose it unto thee?

13. இஸ்ரவேலின் தேவனாகிய கர்த்தர் யோனத்தானுக்கு அதற்குச் சரியாகவும் அதற்கு அதிகமாகவும் செய்யக்கடவர்; ஆனாலும் உமக்குத் தீங்குசெய்ய என் தகப்பனுக்குப் பிரியமாயிருந்தால், அதை உமது செவிகளுக்கு வெளிப்படுத்தி, நீர் சமாதானத்தோடே போகும்படிக்கு உம்மை அனுப்பிவிடுவேன்; கர்த்தர் என் தகப்பனோடு இருந்ததுபோல், உம்மோடும் இருப்பாராக.

13. The LORD do so to Jonathan, and more also, should it please my father to do thee evil, if I disclose it not unto thee, and send thee away, that thou mayest go in peace: and the LORD be with thee, as he hath been with my father.

14. மேலும், நான் உயிரோடிருக்கையில், நான் சாகாதபடிக்கு நீர் கர்த்தரின் நிமித்தமாய் எனக்குத் தயை செய்யவேண்டியதும் அல்லாமல்,

14. And thou shalt not only while yet I live shew me the kindness of the LORD, that I die not:

15. கர்த்தர் தாவீதின் சத்துருக்களாகிய ஒவ்வொருவரையும் பூமியின்மேல் இராதபடிக்கு, வேர் அறுக்கும்போதும், நீர் என்றைக்கும் உமது தயவை என் வீட்டைவிட்டு அகற்றிவிடாமலும் இருக்கவேண்டும் என்றான்.

15. but also thou shalt not cut off thy kindness from my house for ever: no, not when the LORD hath cut off the enemies of David every one from the face of the earth.

16. இப்படி யோனத்தான் தாவீதின் குடும்பத்தோடே உடன்படிக்கைபண்ணி, தாவீதுடைய சத்துருக்களின் கையிலே கர்த்தர் கணக்குக் கேட்பாராக என்று சொல்லி,

16. So Jonathan made a covenant with the house of David, {cf15i saying}, And the LORD shall require it at the hand of Davids enemies.

17. யோனத்தான் தாவீதை மிகவும் சிநேகித்தபடியினால், பின்னும் அவனுக்கு ஆணையிட்டான்; தன் உயிரைச் சிநேகித்ததுபோல அவனைச் சிநேகித்தான்.

17. And Jonathan caused David to swear again, for the love that he had to him: for he loved him as he loved his own soul.

18. பின்பு யோனத்தான் தாவீதைப் பார்த்து: நாளைக்கு அமாவாசி, நீர் உட்கார வேண்டிய இடம் காலியாயிருப்பதினால் உம்மைக்குறித்து விசாரிக்கப்படும்.

18. Then Jonathan said unto him, Tomorrow is the new moon: and thou shalt be missed, because thy seat will be empty.

19. காரியம் நடந்தபோது, மூன்றாம் நாளிலே நீர் ஒளித்திருக்கும் இடத்திற்குத் தீவிரித்து வந்து, ஏசேல் என்னும் கல்லண்டையிலே உட்கார்ந்திரும்.

19. And when thou hast stayed three days, thou shalt go down quickly, and come to the place where thou didst hide thyself when the business was in hand, and shalt remain by the stone Ezel.

20. அப்பொழுது நான் குறிப்பு வைத்து எய்கிறதுபோல, அதற்குப் பக்கமாக மூன்று அம்புகளை எய்து:

20. And I will shoot three arrows on the side thereof, as though I shot at a mark.

21. நீ போய், அந்த அம்புகளைத் தேடி வா என்று ஒரு பிள்ளையாண்டானை அனுப்புவேன்; இதோ, அம்புகள் உனக்கு இப்புறத்திலே கிடக்கிறது, அவைகளை எடுத்துக்கொண்டுவா என்று பிள்ளையாண்டானிடத்தில் நான் சொன்னால், நீர் வாரும்; அப்பொழுது ஒன்றும் இல்லை, உமக்குச் சமாதானம் இருக்கும் என்று கர்த்தருடைய ஜீவனைக்கொண்டு சொல்லுகிறேன்.

21. And, behold, I will send the lad, {cf15i saying}, Go, find the arrows. If I say unto the lad, Behold, the arrows are on this side of thee: take them, and come; for there is peace to thee and no hurt, as the LORD liveth.

22. இதோ, அம்புகள் உனக்கு அப்புறத்திலே கிடக்கிறது என்று நான் அந்தப் பிள்ளையாண்டானிடத்தில் சொன்னால், நீர் போய்விடும்; அப்பொழுது கர்த்தர் உம்மைப் போகச்சொல்லுகிறார் என்று அறியும்.

22. But if I say thus unto the boy, Behold, the arrows are beyond thee: go thy way; for the LORD hath sent thee away.

23. நீரும் நானும் பேசிக்கொண்ட காரியத்திற்கு, இதோ, கர்த்தர் எனக்கும் உமக்கும் என்றைக்கும் நடுநிற்கும் சாட்சி என்றான்.

23. And as touching the matter which thou and I have spoken of, behold, the LORD is between thee and me for ever.

24. அப்படியே தாவீது வெளியிலே ஒளித்துக்கொண்டிருந்தான்; அமாவாசியானபோது ராஜா போஜனம் பண்ண உட்கார்ந்தான்.

24. So David hid himself in the field: and when the new moon was come, the king sat him down to eat meat.

25. ராஜா சுவரண்டையிலிருக்கிற தன் இடத்தில் எப்போதும்போல் உட்கார்ந்தபோது, யோனத்தான் எழுந்திருந்தான்; அப்னேரோ சவுலுடைய பக்கத்தில் உட்கார்ந்தான்; தாவீது இருக்கும் இடம் காலியாயிருந்தது.

25. And the king sat upon his seat, as at other times, even upon the seat by the wall; and Jonathan stood up, and Abner sat by Sauls side: but Davids place was empty.

26. ஆனாலும் அவன் தீட்டாயிருக்கிறானாக்கும், அவன் தீட்டுப்பட்டுத்தான் இருக்கவேண்டும் என்று அன்றையதினம் சவுல் ஒன்றும் சொல்லவில்லை.

26. Nevertheless Saul spake not any thing that day: for he thought, Something hath befallen him, he is not clean; surely he is not clean.

27. அமாவாசிக்கு மறுநாளிலும் தாவீது இருக்கும் இடம் காலியாயிருந்தது; அப்பொழுது சவுல்: ஈசாயின் மகன் நேற்றும் இன்றும் போஜனத்துக்கு வராதேபோனது என்ன என்று தன் குமாரனாகிய யோனத்தானைக் கேட்டான்.

27. And it came to pass on the morrow after the new moon, {cf15i which was} the second {cf15i day}, that Davids place was empty: and Saul said unto Jonathan his son, Wherefore cometh not the son of Jesse to meat, neither yesterday, nor today?

28. யோனத்தான் சவுலுக்குப் பிரதியுத்தரமாக: பெத்லெகேம்மட்டும் போக, தாவீது என்னிடத்தில் வருந்திக்கேட்டு,

28. And Jonathan answered Saul, David earnestly asked leave of me to go to Bethlehem:

29. அங்கே நான் போகவேண்டும்; எங்கள் குடும்பத்தார் ஊரிலே பலியிடப் போகிறார்கள்; என் தமையன் என்னை வரும்படி கட்டளையிட்டார்; உம்முடைய கண்களில் எனக்குத் தயை கிடைத்ததானால், நான் என் சகோதரரைப் பார்க்கிறதற்குப் போக எனக்கு உத்தரவு கொடும் என்றான்; இதனாலேதான் அவன் ராஜாவின் பந்திக்கு வரவில்லை என்றான்.

29. and he said, Let me go, I pray thee; for our family hath a sacrifice in the city; and my brother, he hath commanded me {cf15i to be there}: and now, if I have found favour in thine eyes, let me get away, I pray thee, and see my brethren. Therefore he is not come unto the kings table.

30. அப்பொழுது சவுல் யோனத்தான்மேல் கோபமூண்டவனாகி, அவனைப் பார்த்து: இரண்டகமும் மாறுபாடுமுள்ளவளின் மகனே, நீ உனக்கு வெட்கமாகவும், உன் தாயின் மானத்திற்கு வெட்கமாகவும், ஈசாயின் மகனைத் தோழனாகத் தெரிந்து கொண்டிருக்கிறதை நான் அறியேனோ?

30. Then Sauls anger was kindled against Jonathan, and he said unto him, Thou son of a perverse rebellious woman, do not I know that thou hast chosen the son of Jesse to thine own shame, and unto the shame of thy mothers nakedness?

31. ஈசாயின் மகன் பூமியின்மேல் உயிரோடிருக்கும் நாள்வரையும் நீயானாலும், உன் ராஜ்யபாரமானாலும் நிலைப்படுவதில்லை; இப்போதே அவனை அழைப்பித்து, என்னிடத்தில் கொண்டுவா; அவன் சாகவேண்டும் என்றான்.

31. For as long as the son of Jesse liveth upon the ground, thou shalt not be stablished, nor thy kingdom. Wherefore now send and fetch him unto me, for he shall surely die.

32. யோனத்தான் தன் தகப்பனாகிய சவுலுக்குப் பிரதியுத்தரமாக; அவன் ஏன் கொல்லப்படவேண்டும்? அவன் என்ன செய்தான் என்றான்.

32. And Jonathan answered Saul his father, and said unto him, Wherefore should he be put to death? what hath he done?

33. அப்பொழுது சவுல்: அவனைக் குத்திப்போட அவன்மேல் ஈட்டியை எறிந்தான்; ஆகையால் தாவீதைக் கொன்றுபோடத் தன் தகப்பன் தீர்மானித்திருக்கிறான் என்பதை யோனத்தான் அறிந்துகொண்டு,

33. And Saul cast his spear at him to smite him: whereby Jonathan knew that it was determined of his father to put David to death.

34. கோபதாபமாய் பந்தியைவிட்டு எழுந்திருந்துபோய், அமாவாசியின் மறுநாளாகிய அன்றையதினம் போஜனம்பண்ணாதிருந்தான்; தன் தகப்பன் தாவீதை நிந்தித்துச் சொன்னது அவனுக்கு மனநோவாயிருந்தது.

34. So Jonathan arose from the table in fierce anger, and did eat no meat the second day of the month: for he was grieved for David, because his father had done him shame.

35. மறுநாள் காலமே, யோனத்தான் தாவீதுக்குக் குறித்த நேரத்திலே ஒரு சிறுபிள்ளையாண்டானைக் கூட்டிக்கொண்டு, வெளியே புறப்பட்டுப்போய்:

35. And it came to pass in the morning, that Jonathan went out into the field at the time appointed with David, and a little lad with him.

36. பிள்ளையாண்டானை நோக்கி: நீ ஓடி, நான் எய்கிற அம்புகளைத் தேடி எடுத்துக்கொண்டுவா என்று சொல்லி, அந்தப் பிள்ளையாண்டான் ஓடும்போது, அவனுக்கு அப்பாலே போகும்படி ஒரு அம்பை எய்தான்.

36. And he said unto his lad, Run, find now the arrows which I shoot. And as the lad ran, he shot an arrow beyond him.

37. யோனத்தான் எய்த அம்பிருக்கும் இடமட்டும் பிள்ளையாண்டான் போனபோது, அம்பு உனக்கு இன்னும் அப்பால் இருக்கிறது அல்லவா என்று யோனத்தான் பிள்ளையாண்டானுக்குப் பிறகேயிருந்து கூப்பிட்டான்.

37. And when the lad was come to the place of the arrow which Jonathan had shot, Jonathan cried after the lad, and said, Is not the arrow beyond thee?

38. நீ தரித்து நிற்காமல் தீவிரித்துப் பொட்டெனப்போ என்றும் யோனத்தான் பிள்ளையாண்டானுக்குப் பிறகேயிருந்து கூப்பிட்டான்; அப்படியே யோனத்தானின் பிள்ளையாண்டான் அம்புகளைப் பொறுக்கி, தன் எஜமானிடத்தில் கொண்டு வந்தான்.

38. And Jonathan cried after the lad, Make speed, haste, stay not. And Jonathans lad gathered up the arrows, and came to his master.

39. அந்தக் காரியம் யோனத்தானுக்கும் தாவீதுக்கும் தெரிந்திருந்ததேயல்லாமல், அந்தப் பிள்ளையாண்டானுக்கு ஒன்றும் தெரியாதிருந்தது.

39. But the lad knew not any thing: only Jonathan and David knew the matter.

40. அப்பொழுது யோனத்தான்: தன் ஆயுதங்களைப் பிள்ளையாண்டானிடத்தில் கொடுத்து, இவைகளைப் பட்டணத்திற்குக் கொண்டுபோ என்றான்.

40. And Jonathan gave his weapons unto his lad, and said unto him, Go, carry them to the city.

41. பிள்ளையாண்டான் போனபின்பு, தாவீது தென்புறமான இடத்திலிருந்து எழுந்து வந்து, தரையிலே முகங்குப்புற விழுந்து, மூன்று விசை வணங்கினான்; அவர்கள் ஒருவரை ஒருவர் முத்தஞ்செய்து அழுதார்கள்; தாவீது மிகவும் அழுதான்.

41. And as soon as the lad was gone, David arose out of {cf15i a place} toward the South, and fell on his face to the ground, and bowed himself three times: and they kissed one another, and wept one with another, until David exceeded.

42. அப்பொழுது யோனத்தான் தாவீதை நோக்கி: நீர் சமாதானத்தோடே போம், கர்த்தர் என்றைக்கும் எனக்கும் உமக்கும், என் சந்ததிக்கும் உமது சந்ததிக்கும், நடுநிற்கும் சாட்சி என்று சொல்லி, கர்த்தருடைய நாமத்தைக்கொண்டு நாம் இருவரும் ஆணையிட்டுக்கொண்டதை நினைத்துக்கொள்ளும் என்றான். (43) பின்பு அவன் எழுந்து புறப்பட்டுப் போனான்; யோனத்தானோ பட்டணத்திற்குப் போய்விட்டான்.

42. And Jonathan said to David, Go in peace, forasmuch as we have sworn both of us in the name of the LORD, saying, The LORD shall be between me and thee, and between my seed and thy seed, for ever. And he arose and departed: and Jonathan went into the city.
