1. பெலிஸ்தர் யுத்தம் பண்ணுகிறதற்குத் தங்கள் சேனைகளைச் சேர்த்து, யூதாவிலுள்ள சோக்கோவிலே ஒருமித்துக் கூடி, சோக்கோவுக்கும் அசெக்காவுக்கும் நடுவே இருக்கிற எபேஸ்தம்மீமிலே பாளயமிறங்கினார்கள்.

1. Now the Philistines collected their armies to battle, and were assembled at Shochoh, which {belongeth} to Judah, and encamped between Shochoh and Azekah, in Ephes-dammim.

2. சவுலும் இஸ்ரவேல் மனுஷரும் ஒருமித்துக் கூடி, ஏலா பள்ளத்தாக்கிலே பாளயமிறங்கி, பெலிஸ்தருக்கு எதிராக யுத்தத்திற்கு அணிவகுத்து நின்றார்கள்.

2. And Saul and the men of Israel were assembled and encamped by the valley of Elah, and {they} set the battle in array against the Philistines.

3. பெலிஸ்தர் அந்தப்பக்கத்தில் ஒரு மலையின்மேலும், இஸ்ரவேலர் இந்தப்பக்கத்தில் ஒரு மலையின்மேலும் நின்றார்கள்; அவர்களுக்கு நடுவே பள்ளத்தாக்கு இருந்தது.

3. And the Philistines stood on a mountain on the one side, and Israel stood on a mountain on the other side: and {there was} a valley between them.

4. அப்பொழுது காத் ஊரானாகிய கோலியாத் என்னும் பேருள்ள ஒரு வீரன் பெலிஸ்தரின் பாளயத்திலிருந்து புறப்பட்டு வந்து நடுவே நிற்பான்; அவன் உயரம் ஆறு முழமும் ஒரு ஜாணுமாம்.

4. And there went out a champion from the camp of the Philistines, named Goliath, of Gath, whose hight {was} six cubits and a span.

5. அவன் தன் தலையின்மேல் வெண்கலச் சீராவைப் போட்டு, ஒரு போர்க்கவசம் தரித்துக்கொண்டிருப்பான்; அந்தக் கவசத்தின் நிறை ஐயாயிரம் சேக்கலான வெண்கலமாயிருக்கும்.

5. And {he had} a helmet of brass upon his head, and he {was} armed with a coat of mail; and the weight of the coat {was} five thousand shekels of brass.

6. அவன் தன் கால்களிலே வெண்கலக்கவசத்தையும் தன் தோள்களின்மேல் வெண்கலக் கேடகத்தையும் தரித்திருப்பான்.

6. And {he had} greaves of brass upon his legs, and a target of brass between his shoulders.

7. அவனுடைய ஈட்டித்தாங்கு நெசவுக்காரரின் படைமரத்தின் கனதியும் அவன் ஈட்டியின் அலகு அறுநூறு சேக்கல் இரும்புமாயிருக்கும்; பரிசை பிடிக்கிறவன் அவனுக்கு முன்னாக நடப்பான்.

7. And the staff of his spear {was} like a weaver's beam; and his spear's head {weighed} six hundred shekels of iron: and one bearing a shield went before him.

8. And he stood and cried to the armies of Israel, and said to them, Why have ye come out to set {your} battle in array? {am} not I a Philistine, and ye servants to Saul? choose you a man for you, and let him come down to me.

9. If he shall be able to fight with me, and to kill me, then will we be your servants: but if I shall prevail against him, and kill him, then shall ye be our servants, and serve us.

10. And the Philistine said, I defy the armies of Israel this day; give me a man, that we may fight together.

11. சவுலும் இஸ்ரவேலர் அனைவரும் அந்தப் பெலிஸ்தனுடைய வார்த்தைகளைக் கேட்டு, கலங்கி மிகவும் பயப்பட்டார்கள்.

11. When Saul and all Israel heard those words of the Philistine, they were dismayed, and greatly afraid.

12. தாவீது என்பவன் யூதாவிலுள்ள பெத்லெகேம் ஊரானாகிய ஈசாய் என்னும் பேருள்ள எப்பிராத்திய மனுஷனுடைய குமாரனாயிருந்தான்; ஈசாயுக்கு எட்டுக் குமாரர் இருந்தார்கள்; இவன் சவுலின் நாட்களிலே மற்ற ஜனங்களுக்குள்ளே வயது சென்ற கிழவனாய் மதிக்கப்பட்டான்.

12. Now David {was} the son of that Ephrathite of Beth-lehem-judah, whose name {was} Jesse; and he had eight sons: and the man went among men {for} an old man in the days of Saul.

13. ஈசாயினுடைய மூன்று மூத்த குமாரர் சவுலோடேகூட யுத்தத்திற்குப் போயிருந்தார்கள்; யுத்தத்திற்குப் போயிருந்த அவனுடைய மூன்று குமாரரில் மூத்தவனுக்கு எலியாப் என்றும், இரண்டாங்குமாரனுக்கு அபினதாப் என்றும், மூன்றாங்குமாரனுக்குச் சம்மா என்றும் பேர்.

13. And the three eldest sons of Jesse went {and} followed Saul to the battle: and the names of his three sons that went to the battle {were} Eliab the first-born, and next to him Abinadab, and the third Shammah.

14. தாவீது எல்லாருக்கும் இளையவன்; மூத்தவர்களாகிய அந்த மூன்று பேரும் சவுலோடேகூடப் போயிருந்தார்கள்.

14. And David {was} the youngest: and the three eldest followed Saul.

15. தாவீது சவுலைவிட்டுத் திரும்பிப் போய் பெத்லெகேமிலிருக்கிற தன் தகப்பனுடைய ஆடுகளை மேய்த்துக்கொண்டிருந்தான்.

15. But David went and returned from Saul to feed his father's sheep at Beth-lehem.

16. அந்தப் பெலிஸ்தன் காலையிலும் மாலையிலும் நாற்பது நாள் வந்துவந்து நிற்பான்.

16. And the Philistine drew near morning and evening, and presented himself forty days.

17. ஈசாய் தன் குமாரனாகிய தாவீதை நோக்கி: உன் சகோதரருக்கு இந்த ஒரு மரக்கால் வறுத்த பயற்றையும், இந்தப் பத்து அப்பங்களையும் எடுத்துக்கொண்டு, பாளயத்திலிருக்கிற உன் சகோதரரிடத்தில் ஓட்டமாய்ப் போய்,

17. And Jesse said to David his son, Take now for thy brethren an ephah of this parched {corn}, and these ten loaves, and run to the camp to thy brethren;

18. இந்தப் பத்துப் பால்கட்டிகளை ஆயிரம்பேருக்கு அதிபதியானவனிடத்தில் கொடுத்து, உன் சகோதரர் சுகமாயிருக்கிறார்களா என்று விசாரித்து, அவர்களிடத்தில் அடையாளம் வாங்கிக்கொண்டுவா என்றான்.

18. And carry these ten cheeses to the captain of {their} thousand, and see how thy brethren fare, and take their pledge.

19. அப்பொழுது சவுலும், அவர்களும், இஸ்ரவேலர் எல்லாரும், ஏலா பள்ளத்தாக்கிலே பெலிஸ்தரோடு யுத்தம்பண்ணிக்கொண்டிருந்தார்கள்.

19. Now Saul, and they, and all the men of Israel, {were} in the valley of Elah, fighting with the Philistines.

20. தாவீது அதிகாலையில் எழுந்து, ஆடுகளைக் காவலாளி வசமாய் விட்டு, ஈசாய் தனக்குக் கற்பித்தபடியே எடுத்துக்கொண்டுபோய், இரதங்கள் இருக்கிற இடத்திலே வந்தான்; சேனைகள் அணிவகுத்து நின்று, யுத்தத்திற்கென்று ஆர்ப்பரித்தார்கள்.

20. And David rose early in the morning, and left the sheep with a keeper, and took, and went, as Jesse had commanded him; and he came to the trench, as the host was going forth to the fight, and shouted for the battle.

21. இஸ்ரவேலரும் பெலிஸ்தரும் ஒருவருக்கு எதிராக ஒருவர் அணிவகுத்துக் கொண்டிருந்தார்கள்.

21. For Israel and the Philistines had put the battle in array, army against army.

22. அப்பொழுது தாவீது: தான் கொண்டுவந்தவைகளை இறக்கி, ரஸ்துக்களைக் காக்கிறவன் வசமாக வைத்துவிட்டு, சேனைக்குள் ஓடி, தன் சகோதரரைப் பார்த்து: சுகமாயிருக்கிறீர்களா என்று கேட்டான்.

22. And David left his furniture in the hand of the keeper of the vessels, and ran into the army, and came and saluted his brethren.

23. அவன் இவர்களோடே பேசிக்கொண்டிருக்கையில், இதோ, காத் ஊரானாகிய கோலியாத் என்னும் பேருள்ள அந்தப் பெலிஸ்த வீரன் பெலிஸ்தரின் சேனைகளிலிருந்து எழும்பிவந்து நின்று, முன் சொன்ன வார்த்தைகளையே சொன்னான்; அதைத் தாவீது கேட்டான்.

23. And as he talked with them, behold, there came up the champion, the Philistine of Gath, Goliath by name, from the armies of the Philistines, and spoke according to the same words: and David heard {them}.

24. இஸ்ரவேலர் எல்லாரும் அந்த மனுஷனைக் காணும்போது மிகவும் பயப்பட்டு, அவன் முகத்துக்கு விலகி ஓடிப்போவார்கள்.

24. And all the men of Israel, when they saw the man, fled from him, and were exceedingly afraid.

25. அந்நேரத்திலே இஸ்ரவேலர்: வந்து நிற்கிற அந்த மனுஷனைக் கண்டீர்களா, இஸ்ரவேலை நிந்திக்க வந்து நிற்கிறான்; இவனைக் கொல்லுகிறவன் எவனோ, அவனை ராஜா மிகவும் ஐசுவரியவானாக்கி, அவனுக்குத் தம்முடைய குமாரத்தியைத் தந்து, அவன் தகப்பன் வீட்டாருக்கு இஸ்ரவேலிலே சர்வமானியம் கொடுப்பார் என்றார்கள்.

25. And the men of Israel said, Have ye seen this man that hath come up? surely to defy Israel hath he come: and it shall be, {that} the man who shall kill him, the king will enrich him with great riches, and will give him his daughter, and make his father's house free in Israel.

26. அப்பொழுது தாவீது தன்னண்டையிலே நிற்கிறவர்களைப் பார்த்து, இந்தப் பெலிஸ்தனைக் கொன்று இஸ்ரவேலுக்கு நேரிட்ட நிந்தையை நீக்குகிறவனுக்கு என்ன செய்யப்படும்; ஜீவனுள்ள தேவனுடைய சேனைகளை நிந்திக்கிறதற்கு விருத்தசேதனம் இல்லாத இந்த பெலிஸ்தன் எம்மாத்திரம் என்றான்.

26. And David spoke to the men that stood by him, saying, What shall be done to the man that killeth this Philistine, and taketh away the reproach from Israel? for who {is} this uncircumcised Philistine, that he should defy the armies of the living God?

27. அதற்கு ஜனங்கள்: அவனைக் கொல்லுகிறவனுக்கு இன்ன இன்னபடி செய்யப்படும் என்று முன் சொன்ன வார்த்தைகளையே அவனுக்குச் சொன்னார்கள்.

27. And the people answered him after this manner, saying, So shall it be done to the man that killeth him.

28. அந்த மனுஷரோடே அவன் பேசிக்கொண்டிருக்கிறதை அவன் மூத்த சகோதரனாகிய எலியாப் கேட்டபோது, அவன் தாவீதின்மேல் கோபங்கொண்டு: நீ இங்கே வந்தது என்ன? வனாந்தரத்திலுள்ள அந்தக் கொஞ்ச ஆடுகளை நீ யார் வசத்தில் விட்டாய்? யுத்தத்தைப் பார்க்க அல்லவா வந்தாய்? உன் துணிகரத்தையும், உன் இருதயத்தின் அகங்காரத்தையும் நான் அறிவேன் என்றான்.

28. And Eliab his eldest brother heard when he spoke to the men; and Eliab's anger was kindled against David, and he said, Why camest thou down hither? and with whom hast thou left those few sheep in the wilderness? I know thy pride, and the naughtiness of thy heart; for thou art come down that thou mayest see the battle.

29. அதற்குத் தாவீது: நான் இப்பொழுது செய்தது என்ன? நான் வந்ததற்கு முகாந்தரம் இல்லையா என்று சொல்லி,

29. And David said, What have I now done? {Is there} not a cause?

30. அவனை விட்டு, வேறொருவனிடத்தில் திரும்பி, அந்தப்பிரகாரமாகவே கேட்டான்; ஜனங்கள் முன்போலவே உத்தரவு சொன்னார்கள்.

30. And he turned from him towards another, and spoke after the same manner: and the people answered him again after the former manner.

31. தாவீது சொன்ன வார்த்தைகளை அவர்கள் கேட்டு, அதைச் சவுலின் சமுகத்தில் அறிவித்தார்கள்; அப்பொழுது அவன் அவனை அழைப்பித்தான்.

31. And when the words were heard which David spoke, they rehearsed {them} before Saul: and he sent for him.

32. தாவீது சவுலை நோக்கி: இவனிமித்தம் ஒருவனுடைய இருதயமும் கலங்க வேண்டியதில்லை; உம்முடைய அடியானாகிய நான் போய், இந்தப் பெலிஸ்தனோடே யுத்தம்பண்ணுவேன் என்றான்.

32. And David said to Saul, Let no man's heart fail because of him; thy servant will go and fight with this Philistine.

33. அப்பொழுது சவுல் தாவீதை நோக்கி: நீ இந்தப் பெலிஸ்தனோடே எதிர்த்து யுத்தம்பண்ண உன்னால் ஆகாது; நீ இளைஞன், அவனோ தன் சிறுவயது முதல் யுத்தவீரன் என்றான்.

33. And Saul said to David, Thou art not able to go against this Philistine to fight with him: for thou {art but} a youth, and he a man of war from his youth.

34. தாவீது சவுலைப்பார்த்து: உம்முடைய அடியான் என் தகப்பனுடைய ஆடுகளை மேய்த்துக்கொண்டிருக்கிறபோது, ஒரு விசை ஒரு சிங்கமும் ஒரு விசை ஒரு கரடியும் வந்து, மந்தையிலிருக்கிற ஒரு ஆட்டைப் பிடித்துக்கொண்டது.

34. And David said to Saul, Thy servant kept his father's sheep, and there came a lion, and a bear, and took a lamb out of the flock:

35. And I went after him, and smote him, and delivered {it} out of his mouth: and when he arose against me, I caught {him} by his beard, and smote him, and slew him.

36. அந்தச் சிங்கத்தையும் அந்தக் கரடியையும் உம்முடைய அடியானாகிய நான் கொன்றேன்; விருத்தசேதனமில்லாத இந்தப் பெலிஸ்தனும் அவைகளில் ஒன்றைப் போல இருப்பான்; அவன் ஜீவனுள்ள தேவனுடைய சேனைகளை நிந்தித்தானே என்றான்.

36. Thy servant slew both the lion and the bear: and this uncircumcised Philistine shall be as one of them, seeing he hath defied the armies of the living God.

37. பின்னும் தாவீது: என்னைச் சிங்கத்தின் கைக்கும் கரடியின் கைக்கும் தப்புவித்த கர்த்தர் இந்தப் பெலிஸ்தனுடைய கைக்கும் தப்புவிப்பார் என்றான்; அப்பொழுது சவுல் தாவீதைப் பார்த்து: போ, கர்த்தர் உன்னுடனேகூட இருப்பாராக என்றான்.

37. David said moreover, The LORD that delivered me out of the paw of the lion, and out of the paw of the bear, he will deliver me out of the hand of this Philistine. And Saul said to David, Go, and the LORD be with thee.

38. சவுல் தாவீதுக்குத் தன் வஸ்திரங்களை உடுத்துவித்து வெண்கலமான ஒரு சீராவை அவன் தலையின்மேல் போட்டு, ஒரு கவசத்தையும் அவனுக்குத் தரிப்பித்தான்.

38. And Saul armed David with his armor, and he put a helmet of brass upon his head; also he armed him with a coat of mail.

39. அவனுடைய பட்டயத்தை தாவீது தன் வஸ்திரங்கள்மேல் கட்டிக்கொண்டு, அதிலே அவனுக்குப் பழக்கமில்லாததினால் நடந்து பார்த்தான்; அப்பொழுது தாவீது சவுலை நோக்கி: நான் இவைகளைப் போட்டுக்கொண்டு போகக்கூடாது; இந்த அப்பியாசம் எனக்கு இல்லை என்று சொல்லி, அவைகளைக் களைந்துபோட்டு,

39. And David girded his sword upon his armor, and he essayed to go; for he had not proved {it}. And David said to Saul, I cannot go with these, for I have not proved {them}. And David put them off from him.

40. தன் தடியைக் கையிலே பிடித்துக்கொண்டு, ஆற்றிலிருக்கிற ஐந்து கூழாங்கல்லுகளைத் தெரிந்தெடுத்து, அவைகளை மேய்ப்பருக்குரிய தன்னுடைய அடைப்பப்பையிலே போட்டு, தன் கவணைத் தன் கையிலே பிடித்துக்கொண்டு, அந்தப் பெலிஸ்தனண்டையிலே போனான்.

40. And he took his staff in his hand, and chose him five smooth stones out of the brook, and put them in a shepherd's bag which he had, even in a scrip; and his sling {was} in his hand; and he drew near to the Philistine.

41. பெலிஸ்தனும் நடந்து, தாவீதண்டைக்குக் கிட்டி வந்தான்; பரிசையைப் பிடிக்கிறவன் அவனுக்கு முன்னாக நடந்தான்.

41. And the Philistine advanced and drew near to David; and the man that bore the shield {went} before him.

42. பெலிஸ்தன் சுற்றிப்பார்த்து: தாவீதைக் கண்டு, அவன் இளைஞனும் சவுந்தரிய ரூபமான சிவந்த மேனியுள்ளவனுமாயிருந்தபடியினால், அவனை அசட்டைபண்ணினான்.

42. And when the Philistine looked about, and saw David, he disdained him: for he was a youth, and ruddy, and of a fair countenance.

43. பெலிஸ்தன் தாவீதைப் பார்த்து: நீ தடிகளோடே என்னிடத்தில் வர நான் நாயா என்று சொல்லி, அவன் தன் தேவர்களைக்கொண்டு தாவீதைச் சபித்தான்.

43. And the Philistine said to David, {Am} I a dog, that thou comest to me with staffs? and the Philistine cursed David by his gods.

44. பின்னும் அந்தப் பெலிஸ்தன் தாவீதைப் பார்த்து: என்னிடத்தில் வா; நான் உன் மாம்சத்தை ஆகாயத்துப் பறவைகளுக்கும் காட்டு மிருகங்களுக்கும் கொடுப்பேன் என்றான்.

44. And the Philistine said to David, Come to me, and I will give thy flesh to the fowls of the air, and to the beasts of the field.

45. அதற்குத் தாவீது: பெலிஸ்தனை நோக்கி: நீ பட்டயத்தோடும், ஈட்டியோடும், கேடகத்தோடும் என்னிடத்தில் வருகிறாய்; நானோ நீ நிந்தித்த இஸ்ரவேலுடைய இராணுவங்களின் தேவனாகிய சேனைகளுடைய கர்த்தரின் நாமத்திலே உன்னிடத்தில் வருகிறேன்.

45. Then said David to the Philistine, Thou comest to me with a sword, and with a spear, and with a shield: but I come to thee in the name of the LORD of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, whom thou hast defied.

46. இன்றையதினம் கர்த்தர் உன்னை என் கையில் ஒப்புக்கொடுப்பார்; நான் உன்னைக் கொன்று, உன் தலையை உன்னை விட்டு வாங்கி, பெலிஸ்தருடைய பாளயத்தின் பிணங்களை இன்றையதினம் ஆகாயத்துப் பறவைகளுக்கும், பூமியின் காட்டு மிருகங்களுக்கும் கொடுப்பேன்; அதனால் இஸ்ரவேலில் தேவன் ஒருவர் உண்டு என்று பூலோகத்தார் எல்லாரும் அறிந்துகொள்ளுவார்கள்.

46. This day will the LORD deliver thee into my hand; and I will smite thee, and take thy head from thee; and I will give the carcasses of the host of the Philistines this day to the fowls of the air, and to the wild beasts of the earth; that all the earth may know that there is a God in Israel.

47. கர்த்தர் பட்டயத்தினாலும் ஈட்டியினாலும் இரட்சிக்கிறவர் அல்ல என்று இந்த ஜனக்கூட்டமெல்லாம் அறிந்து கொள்ளும்; யுத்தம் கர்த்தருடையது; அவர் உங்களை எங்கள் கையில் ஒப்புக்கொடுப்பார் என்றான்.

47. And all this assembly shall know that the LORD saveth not with sword and spear: for the battle {is} the LORD'S, and he will give you into our hands.

48. அப்பொழுது அந்தப் பெலிஸ்தன் எழும்பி, தாவீதுக்கு எதிராகக் கிட்டி வருகையில், தாவீது தீவிரமாய் அந்தச் சேனைக்கும் அந்தப் பெலிஸ்தனுக்கும் எதிராக ஓடி,

48. And it came to pass, when the Philistine arose, and came and drew nigh to meet David, that David hasted, and ran towards the army to meet the Philistine.

49. தன் கையை அடைப்பத்திலே போட்டு, அதிலிருந்து ஒரு கல்லை எடுத்து, கவணிலே வைத்துச் சுழற்றி, பெலிஸ்தனுடைய நெற்றியிலே பட எறிந்தான்; அந்தக் கல் அவன் நெற்றியில் பதிந்து போனதினால், அவன் தரையிலே முகங்குப்புற விழுந்தான்.

49. And David put his hand in his bag, and took thence a stone, and hurled it with his sling, and smote the Philistine in his forehead, that the stone sunk into his forehead; and he fell upon his face to the earth.

50. இவ்விதமாகத் தாவீது ஒரு கவணினாலும் ஒரு கல்லினாலும் பெலிஸ்தனை மேற்கொண்டு, அவனை மடங்கடித்து, அவனைக் கொன்று போட்டான்; தாவீதின் கையில் பட்டயம் இல்லாதிருந்தது.

50. So David prevailed over the Philistine with a sling and with a stone, and smote the Philistine, and slew him; but {there was} no sword in the hand of David.

51. ஆகையால் தாவீது பெலிஸ்தனண்டையில் ஓடி அவன்மேல் நின்று, அவன் பட்டயத்தை எடுத்து, அதை அதின் உறையிலிருந்து உருவி, அவனைக்கொன்று அதினாலே அவன் தலையை வெட்டிப்போட்டான்; அப்பொழுது தங்கள் வீரன் செத்துப்போனான் என்று பெலிஸ்தர் கண்டு, ஓடிப்போனார்கள்.

51. Therefore David ran and stood upon the Philistine, and took his sword, and drew it out of its sheath, and slew him, and cut off his head with it. And when the Philistines saw their champion was dead, they fled.

52. அப்பொழுது இஸ்ரவேலரும் யூதா மனுஷரும் எழும்பி, ஆர்ப்பரித்து, பள்ளத்தாக்கின் எல்லைமட்டும், எக்ரோனின் வாசல்கள்மட்டும், பெலிஸ்தரைத் துரத்தினார்கள்; சாராயீமின் வழியிலும், காத் பட்டணமட்டும், எக்ரோன் பட்டணமட்டும், பெலிஸ்தர் வெட்டுண்டு விழுந்தார்கள்.

52. And the men of Israel and of Judah arose, and shouted, and pursued the Philistines to the entrance of the valley, and to the gates of Ekron. And the wounded of the Philistines fell down by the way to Shaaraim, even to Gath, and to Ekron.

53. இஸ்ரவேல் புத்திரர் பெலிஸ்தரை மூர்க்கமாய்த் துரத்தின பிற்பாடு, திரும்பி வந்து, அவர்களுடைய பாளயங்களைக் கொள்ளையிட்டார்கள்.

53. And the children of Israel returned from chasing the Philistines, and they plundered their tents.

54. தாவீது பெலிஸ்தனுடைய தலையை எடுத்து, அதை எருசலேமுக்குக் கொண்டு வந்தான்; அவன் ஆயுதங்களையோ தன் கூடாரத்திலே வைத்தான்.

54. And David took the head of the Philistine, and brought it to Jerusalem; but he put his armor in his tent.

55. தாவீது பெலிஸ்தனுக்கு எதிராகப் புறப்பட்டுப் போகிறதைச் சவுல் கண்டபோது, அவன் சேனாபதியாகிய அப்னேரைப் பார்த்து: அப்னேரே, இந்த வாலிபன் யாருடைய மகன் என்று கேட்டான்; அதற்கு அப்னேர்: ராஜாவே, எனக்குத் தெரியாது என்று உம்முடைய ஜீவனைக்கொண்டு சொல்லுகிறேன் என்றான்.

55. And when Saul saw David go forth against the Philistine, he said to Abner the captain of the host, Abner, whose son {is} this youth? And Abner said, {As} thy soul liveth, O king, I cannot tell.

56. அப்பொழுது ராஜா: அந்தப் பிள்ளையாண்டான் யாருடைய மகன் என்று விசாரி என்றான்.

56. And the king said, Inquire thou whose son the stripling {is}.

57. தாவீது பெலிஸ்தனைக் கொன்று திரும்புகையில், அப்னேர் அவனைச் சவுலுக்கு முன்பாக அழைத்துக்கொண்டு போய்விட்டான்; பெலிஸ்தனுடைய தலை அவன் கையில் இருந்தது.

57. And as David returned from the slaughter of the Philistine, Abner took him, and brought him before Saul with the head of the Philistine in his hand.

58. அப்பொழுது சவுல்: வாலிபனே, நீ யாருடைய மகன் என்று அவனைக்கேட்டதற்கு, தாவீது: நான் பெத்லெகேம் ஊரானாயிருக்கிற உம்முடைய அடியானாகிய ஈசாயின் மகன் என்றான்.

58. And Saul said to him, Whose son {art} thou, {thou} young man? And David answered, I {am} the son of thy servant Jesse the Beth-lehemite.
