1. யோர்தானுக்கு இப்புறத்திலே மலைகளிலும் பள்ளத்தாக்குகளிலும் லீபனோனுக்கு எதிரான பெரிய சமுத்திரத்தின் கரையோரமெங்குமுள்ள ஏத்தியரும், எமோரியரும், கானானியரும், பெரிசியரும், ஏவியரும், எபூசியருமானவர்களுடைய சகல ராஜாக்களும் அதைக் கேள்விப்பட்டபோது,

1. And when the kings of the Amorites on the other side of the Jordan, who were in the mountain country, and in the plain, and in all the coast of the great sea, and those who were near Lebanon, and the Hittites, the Canaanites, the Perizzites, the Hivites, the Amorites, the Girgashites, and the Jebusites, heard [of it,]

2. அவர்கள் ஒருமனப்பட்டு, யோசுவாவோடும் இஸ்ரவேலரோடும் யுத்தம்பண்ண ஏகமாய்க் கூடினார்கள்.

2. they all came together at the same time to make war against Joshua and Israel.

3. எரிகோவுக்கும் ஆயிக்கும் யோசுவா செய்ததைக் கிபியோனின் குடிகள் கேள்விப்பட்டபோது,

3. And the inhabitants of Gibeon heard of all that the Lord did to Jericho and Ai.

4. ஒரு தந்திரமான யோசனைபண்ணி, தங்களை ஸ்தானாபதிகள்போலக் காண்பித்து, பழைய இரட்டுப் பைகளையும், பீறலும் பொத்தலுமான பழைய திராட்சரசத் துருத்திகளையும் தங்கள் கழுதைகள்மேல் வைத்து,

4. And they also worked craftily, and they went and made provisions and prepared themselves; and having taken old sacks on their shoulders, and old and torn wineskins,

5. பழுதுபார்க்கப்பட்ட பழைய பாதரட்சைகளைத் தங்கள் கால்களில் போட்டு, பழைய வஸ்திரங்களை உடுத்திக்கொண்டார்கள்; வழிக்கு அவர்கள் கொண்டுபோன அப்பமெல்லாம் உலர்ந்ததும் பூசணம் பூத்ததுமாயிருந்தது.

5. and the upper part of their shoes and their sandals [appeared] old and clouted on their feet, and their garments laid upon them, and their provisions were dry and moldy and corrupt.

6. அவர்கள் கில்காலில் இருக்கிற பாளயத்துக்கு யோசுவாவினிடத்தில் போய், அவனையும் இஸ்ரவேல் மனுஷரையும் நோக்கி: நாங்கள் தூரதேசத்திலிருந்து வந்தவர்கள், எங்களோடே உடன்படிக்கைபண்ணுங்கள் என்றார்கள்.

6. And they came to Joshua into the camp of Israel, to Gilgal, and said to Joshua and Israel, We have come from a far land. Now then, make a covenant with us.

7. அப்பொழுது இஸ்ரவேல் மனுஷர் அந்த ஏவியரை நோக்கி: நீங்கள் எங்கள் நடுவிலே குடியிருக்கிறவர்களாக்கும்; நாங்கள் எப்படி உங்களோடே உடன்படிக்கை பண்ணலாம் என்றார்கள்.

7. And the children of Israel said to the Hivites, Perhaps you dwell amongst us; how should I make a covenant with you?

8. அவர்கள் யோசுவாவை நோக்கி: நாங்கள் உமக்கு அடிமைகள் என்றார்கள்; அதற்கு யோசுவா: நீங்கள் யார், எங்கேயிருந்து வந்தீர்கள் என்று கேட்டான்.

8. And they said to Joshua, We are your servants. And Joshua said to them, Who are you, and where do you come from?

9. அதற்கு அவர்கள்: உம்முடைய தேவனாகிய கர்த்தருடைய நாமத்தின் பிரஸ்தாபத்தைக் கேட்டு, உமது அடியாராகிய நாங்கள் வெகு தூரதேசத்திலிருந்து வந்தோம்; அவருடைய கீர்த்தியையும், அவர் எகிப்திலே செய்த யாவையும்,

9. And they said, Your servants have come from a very far country in the name of the Lord your God: for we have heard His name, and all that He did in Egypt,

10. அவர் எஸ்போனின் ராஜாவாகிய சீகோனும் அஸ்தரோத்திலிருந்த பாசானின் ராஜாவாகிய ஓகும் என்கிற யோர்தானுக்கு அப்புறத்திலிருந்த எமோரியரின் இரண்டு ராஜாக்களுக்கும் செய்த யாவையும் கேள்விப்பட்டோம்.

10. and all that He did to the kings of the Amorites, who were beyond the Jordan, to Sihon king of the Amorites, and Og king of Bashan, who dwelt in Ashtaroth.

11. ஆகையால், எங்கள் மூப்பரும் எங்கள் தேசத்துக் குடிகளெல்லாரும் எங்களை நோக்கி: உங்கள் கைகளில் வழிக்கு ஆகாரம் எடுத்துக்கொண்டு, அவர்களுக்கு எதிர்கொண்டுபோய், அவர்களிடத்தில்: நாங்கள் உங்கள் அடியார், எங்களோடே உடன்படிக்கை பண்ணவேண்டும் என்று சொல்லச்சொன்னார்கள்.

11. And our elders, and all that inhabit our land, when they heard, [they] spoke to us, saying, Take to yourselves provisions for the way, and go to meet them; and you shall say to them, We are your servants, and now make a covenant with us.

12. உங்களிடத்தில் வர நாங்கள் புறப்படுகிற அன்றே, எங்கள் வழிப்பிரயாணத்துக்கு இந்த அப்பத்தைச் சுடச்சுட எங்கள் வீட்டிலிருந்து எடுத்துக்கொண்டு வந்தோம்; இப்பொழுது, இதோ, உலர்ந்து பூசணம் பூத்திருக்கிறது.

12. These [are] the loaves- we took them hot for our journey on the day in which we came out to come to you. And now they have dried up, and have become moldy.

13. நாங்கள் இந்தத் திராட்சரசத் துருத்திகளை நிரப்புகையில் புதிதாயிருந்தது; ஆனாலும், இதோ, கிழிந்துபோயிற்று; எங்கள் வஸ்திரங்களும் பாதரட்சைகளும் நெடுந்தூரமான பிரயாணத்தினாலே பழசாய்ப்போயிற்று என்றார்கள்.

13. And these [are] the skins of wine which we filled when new, and they are torn; and our garments and our shoes are worn out because of the very long journey.

14. அப்பொழுது இஸ்ரவேலர்: கர்த்தருடைய வாக்கைக் கேளாமல் அவர்களுடைய போஜனபதார்த்தத்தில் சிறிது வாங்கிக்கொண்டார்கள்.

14. And the chiefs took of their provisions, and asked not the [counsel of] the Lord.

15. யோசுவா அவர்களோடே சமாதானம்பண்ணி, அவர்களை உயிரோடே காப்பாற்றும் உடன்படிக்கையை அவர்களோடே பண்ணினான்; அதற்காகச் சபையின் பிரபுக்கள் அவர்களுக்கு ஆணையிட்டுக் கொடுத்தார்கள்.

15. And Joshua made peace with them, and they made a covenant with them to preserve them; and the princes of the congregation swore to them.

16. அவர்களோடே உடன்படிக்கைபண்ணி, மூன்று நாள் சென்றபின்பு, அவர்கள் தங்கள் அயலார் என்றும் தங்கள் நடுவே குடியிருக்கிறவர்கள் என்றும் கேள்விப்பட்டார்கள்.

16. And it came to pass, three days after they had made a covenant with them, [that] they heard that they were close neighbors [of theirs], and that they dwelt among them.

17. இஸ்ரவேல் புத்திரர் பிரயாணம்பண்ணுகையில், மூன்றாம் நாளில் அவர்கள் பட்டணங்களுக்கு வந்தார்கள்; அந்தப் பட்டணங்கள் கிபியோன், கெபிரா, பெயெரோத், கீரியாத்யெயாரீம் என்பவைகள்.

17. And the children of Israel departed and came to their cities; and their cities [were] Gibeon, Chephirah, Beeroth, and the cities of Jearim.

18. சபையின் பிரபுக்கள் அவர்களுக்கு இஸ்ரவேலின் தேவனாகிய கர்த்தர் பேரில் ஆணையிட்டிருந்தபடியினால், இஸ்ரவேல் புத்திரர் அவர்களைச் சங்காரம்பண்ணவில்லை; ஆனாலும் சபையார் எல்லாரும் பிரபுக்கள்மேல் முறுமுறுத்தார்கள்.

18. But the children of Israel did not fight with them, because all the princes swore to them by the Lord God of Israel; and all the congregation murmured at the princes.

19. அப்பொழுது சகல பிரபுக்களும், சபையார் யாவரையும் நோக்கி: நாங்கள் இஸ்ரவேலின் தேவனாகிய கர்த்தர்பேரில் அவர்களுக்கு ஆணையிட்டுக் கொடுத்தோம்; ஆதலால் அவர்களை நாம் தொடக்கூடாது.

19. And the princes said to all the congregation, We have sworn to them by the Lord God of Israel, and now we shall not be able to touch them.

20. கடுங்கோபம் நம்மேல் வராதபடிக்கு, நாம் அவர்களுக்கு இட்ட ஆணையினிமித்தம் நாம் அவர்களை உயிரோடே வைத்து, அவர்களுக்கு ஒன்று செய்வோம்.

20. This we will do: take them alive, and we will preserve them: so there shall not be wrath against us by reason of the oath which we swore to them.

21. பிரபுக்களாகிய நாங்கள் அவர்களுக்குச் சொன்னபடி அவர்கள் உயிரோடிருந்து, சபையார் எல்லாருக்கும் விறகு வெட்டுகிறவர்களாகவும், தண்ணீர் எடுக்கிறவர்களாகவும் இருக்கக்கடவர்கள் என்று பிரபுக்கள் அவர்களோடே சொன்னார்கள்.

21. They shall live, and shall be woodcutters and water carriers to all the congregation, as the princes said to them.

22. பின்பு யோசுவா அவர்களை அழைப்பித்து: நீங்கள் எங்கள் நடுவே குடியிருக்கும்போது: நாங்கள் உங்களுக்கு வெகுதூரமாயிருக்கிறவர்கள் என்று சொல்லி, எங்களை வஞ்சித்தது என்ன?

22. And Joshua called them together and said to them, Why have you deceived me, saying, We live very far from you; whereas you are fellow countrymen of those who dwell among us?

23. இப்பொழுதும் நீங்கள் சபிக்கப்பட்டவர்கள்; என் தேவனுடைய ஆலயத்துக்கு விறகு வெட்டுகிறவர்களும், தண்ணீர் எடுக்கிறவர்களுமான பணிவிடைக்காரராயிருப்பீர்கள்; இந்த ஊழியம் உங்களைவிட்டு நீங்கமாட்டாது என்றான்.

23. And now you are cursed. There shall not fail of you a slave, or a woodcutter, or a water carrier to me and my God.

24. அவர்கள் யோசுவாவுக்கு பிரதியுத்தரமாக: தேசத்தையெல்லாம் உங்களுக்கு ஒப்புக்கொடுக்கவும், தேசத்தின் குடிகளையெல்லாம் உங்களுக்கு முன்பாக அழிக்கவும் உம்முடைய தேவனாகிய கர்த்தர் தமது தாசனாகிய மோசேக்குக் கட்டளையிட்டது உமது அடியாருக்கு நிச்சயமாகவே அறிவிக்கப்பட்டதினால், நாங்கள் எங்கள் ஜீவன்நிமித்தம் உங்களுக்கு மிகவும் பயந்து, இந்தக் காரியத்தைச் செய்தோம்.

24. And they answered Joshua, saying, It was reported to us what the Lord your God commanded His servant Moses, to give you this land, and to destroy us and all that dwelt on it from before you, and we feared very much for our lives because of you, and [therefore] we did this thing.

25. இப்பொதும், இதோ, உமது கையிலிருக்கிறோம், உம்முடைய பார்வைக்கு நன்மையும் நியாயமுமாய்த் தோன்றுகிறபடி எங்களுக்குச் செய்யும் என்றார்கள்.

25. And now, behold, we [are] in your power; do to us as it is pleasing to you, and as it seems [good] to you.

26. அப்படியே யோசுவா அவர்களுக்குச் செய்து, இஸ்ரவேல் புத்திரர் அவர்களைக் கொன்றுபோடாதபடிக்கு, அவர்களை இவர்கள் கைக்குத் தப்புவித்தான்.

26. And they did so to them. And Joshua rescued them in that day out of the hands of the children of Israel, and they did not kill them.

27. இந்நாள்மட்டும் இருக்கிறபடியே, அந்நாளில் அவர்களைச் சபைக்கும், கர்த்தர் தெரிந்துகொள்ளும் இடத்திலிருக்கும் அவருடைய பலிபீடத்துக்கும் விறகு வெட்டுகிறவர்களாகவும் தண்ணீர் எடுக்கிறவர்களாகவுமாக்கினான்.

27. And in that day, Joshua made them woodcutters and water carriers to the whole congregation, and for the altar of God. Therefore the inhabitants of Gibeon became woodcutters and water carriers for the altar of God to this day, even for the place which the Lord should choose.
