1. உஷ்ணகாலத்திலே உறைந்த பனியும், அறுப்புக்காலத்திலே மழையும் தகாததுபோல, மூடனுக்கு மகிமை தகாது.

1. As snow in summer, and rain in harvest, so glory is not seemly for a fool.

2. அடைக்கலான் குருவி அலைந்துபோவதுபோலும், தகைவிலான் குருவி பறந்து போவதுபோலும், காரணமில்லாமலிட்ட சாபம் தங்காது.

2. As a bird flying to other places, and a sparrow going here or there: so a curse uttered without cause shall come upon a man.

3. குதிரைக்குச் சவுக்கும், கழுதைக்குக் கடிவாளமும், மூடனுடைய முதுகுக்குப் பிரம்பும் ஏற்றது.

3. A whip for a horse, and a snaffle for an ass, and a rod for the back of fools.

4. மூடனுக்கு அவன் மதியீனத்தின்படி மறுஉத்தரவு கொடாதே; கொடுத்தால் நீயும் அவனைப் போலாவாய்.

4. Answer not a fool according to his folly, lest thou be made like him.

5. மூடனுக்கு அவன் மதியீனத்தின்படி மறுஉத்தரவு கொடு; கொடாவிட்டால் அவன் தன் பார்வைக்கு ஞானியாயிருப்பான்.

5. Answer a fool according to his folly, lest he imagine himself to be wise.

6. மூடன் கையிலே செய்தி அனுப்புகிறவன் தன் கால்களையே தறித்துக்கொண்டு நஷ்டத்தை அடைகிறான்.

6. He that sendeth words by a foolish messenger, is lame of feet and drinketh iniquity.

7. நொண்டியின் கால்கள் குந்திக்குந்தி நடக்கும், அப்படியே மூடரின் வாயிலுள்ள உவமைச்சொல்லும் குந்தும்.

7. As a lame man hath fair legs in vain: so a parable is unseemly in the mouth of fools.

8. மூடனுக்குக் கனத்தைக் கொடுக்கிறவன் கவணிலே கல்லைக்கட்டுகிறவன்போலிருப்பான்.

8. As he that casteth a stone into the heap of Mercury: so is he that giveth honour to a fool.

9. மூடன் வாயில் அகப்பட்ட பழமொழி வெறியன் கையில் அகப்பட்ட முள்ளு.

9. As if a thorn should grow in the hand of a drunkard: so is a parable in the mouth of fools.

10. பெலத்தவன் அனைவரையும் நோகப்பண்ணி, மூடனையும் வேலைகொள்ளுகிறான், மீறி நடக்கிறவர்களையும் வேலைகொள்ளுகிறான்.

10. Judgment determineth causes: and he that putteth a fool to silence, appeaseth anger.

11. நாயானது தான் கக்கினதைத் தின்னும்படி திரும்புவதுபோல, மூடனும் தன் மூடத்தனத்துக்குத் திரும்புகிறான்.

11. As a dog that returneth to his vomit, so is the fool that repeateth his folly.

12. தன் பார்வைக்கு ஞானியாயிருப்பவனைக் கண்டாயானால், அவனைப்பார்க்கிலும் மூடனைக்குறித்து அதிக நம்பிக்கையாயிருக்கலாம்.

12. Hast thou seen a man wise in his own conceit? there shall be more hope of a fool than of him.

13. வழியிலே சிங்கம் இருக்கும், நடுவீதியிலே சிங்கம் இருக்கும் என்று சோம்பேறி சொல்லுவான்.

13. The slothful man saith: There is a lion in the way, and a lioness in the roads.

14. கதவு கீல்முளையில் ஆடுகிறதுபோல, சோம்பேறியும் படுக்கையில் ஆடிக்கொண்டிருக்கிறான்.

14. As the door turneth upon its hinges, so doth the slothful upon his bed.

15. சோம்பேறி தன் கையைக் கலத்திலே வைத்து அதைத் தன் வாய்க்குத் திரும்ப எடுக்க வருத்தப்படுகிறான்.

15. The slothful hideth his hand under his armpit, and it grieveth him to turn it to his mouth.

16. புத்தியுள்ள மறுஉத்தரவு சொல்லத்தகும் ஏழுபேரைப்பார்க்கிலும் சோம்பேறி தன் பார்வைக்கு அதிக ஞானமுள்ளவன்.

16. The sluggard is wiser in his own conceit, than seven men that speak sentences.

17. வழியே போகையில் தனக்கடாத வழக்கில் தலையிடுகிறவன் நாயைக் காதைப் பிடித்திழுக்கிறவனைப் போலிருக்கிறான்.

17. As he that taketh a dog by the ears, so is he that passeth by in anger, and meddleth with another man's quarrel.

18. கொள்ளிகளையும் அம்புகளையும் சாவுக்கேதுவானவைகளையும் எறிகிற பைத்தியக்காரன் எப்படியிருக்கிறானோ,

18. As he is guilty that shooteth arrows, and lances unto death:

19. அப்படியே, தனக்கடுத்தவனை வஞ்சித்து: நான் விளையாட்டுக்கல்லவோ செய்தேன் என்று சொல்லுகிற மனுஷனும் இருக்கிறான்.

19. So is the man that hurteth his friend deceitfully: and when he is taken, saith: I did it in jest.

20. விறகில்லாமல் நெருப்பு அவியும்; கோள்சொல்லுகிறவனில்லாமல் சண்டை அடங்கும்.

20. When the wood faileth, the fire shall go out: and when the talebearer is taken away, contentions shall cease.

21. கரிகள் தழலுக்கும், விறகு நெருப்புக்கும் ஏதுவானதுபோல, வாதுப்பிரியன் சண்டைகளை மூட்டுகிறதற்கு ஏதுவானவன்.

21. As coals are to burning coals, and wood to fire, so an angry man stirreth up strife.

22. கோள்காரனுடைய வார்த்தைகள் விளையாட்டுப் போலிருக்கும்; ஆனாலும் அவைகள் உள்ளத்திற்குள் தைக்கும்.

22. The words of a talebearer are as it were simple, but they reach to the innermost parts of the belly.

23. நேச அனலைக் காண்பிக்கிற உதடுகளோடு கூடிய தீயநெஞ்சம் வெள்ளிப்பூச்சு பூசிய ஓட்டைப்போலிருக்கும்.

23. Swelling lips joined with a corrupt heart, are like an earthen vessel adorned with silver dross.

24. பகைஞன் தன் உள்ளத்தில் கபடத்தை மறைத்து, தன் உதடுகளினால் சூதுபேசுகிறான்.

24. An enemy is known by his lips, when in his heart he entertaineth deceit.

25. அவன் இதம்பேசினாலும் அவனை நம்பாதே; அவன் இருதயத்தில் ஏழு அருவருப்புகள் உண்டு.

25. When he shall speak low, trust him not: because there are seven mischiefs in his heart.

26. பகையை வஞ்சகமாய் மறைத்து வைக்கிறவனெவனோ, அவனுடைய பொல்லாங்கு மகா சபையிலே வெளிப்படுத்தப்படும்.

26. He that covereth hatred deceitfully, his malice shall be laid open in the public assembly.

27. படுகுழியை வெட்டுகிறவன் தானே அதில் விழுவான்; கல்லைப் புரட்டுகிறவன்மேல் அந்தக் கல் திரும்ப விழும்.

27. He that diggeth a pit, shall fall into it: and he that rolleth a stone, it shall return to him.

28. கள்ளநாவு தன்னால் கிலேசப்பட்டவர்களைப் பகைக்கும்; இச்சகம் பேசும் வாய் அழிவை உண்டுபண்ணும்.

28. A deceitful tongue loveth not truth: and a slippery mouth worketh ruin.
