1. பொல்லாத மனுஷர்மேல் பொறாமை கொள்ளாதே; அவர்களோடே இருக்கவும் விரும்பாதே.

1. Be not envious of evil men, And desire not to be with them.

2. அவர்கள் இருதயம் கொடுமையை யோசிக்கும், அவர்கள் உதடுகள் தீவினையைப் பேசும்.

2. For destruction doth their heart meditate, And perverseness do their lips speak.

3. வீடு ஞானத்தினாலே கட்டப்பட்டு, விவேகத்தினாலே நிலைநிறுத்தப்படும்.

3. By wisdom is a house builded, And by understanding it establisheth itself.

4. அறிவினாலே அறைகளில் அருமையும் இனிமையுமான சகலவிதப் பொருள்களும் நிறைந்திருக்கும்.

4. And by knowledge the inner parts are filled, [With] all precious and pleasant wealth.

5. ஞானமுள்ளவன் பெலமுள்ளவன்; அறிவுள்ளவன் தன் வல்லமையை அதிகரிக்கப்பண்ணுகிறான்.

5. Mighty [is] the wise in strength, And a man of knowledge is strengthening power,

6. நல்யோசனைசெய்து யுத்தம்பண்ணு; ஆலோசனைக்காரர் அநேகரால் ஜெயங்கிடைக்கும்.

6. For by plans thou makest for thyself war, And deliverance [is] in a multitude of counsellors.

7. மூடனுக்கு ஞானம் எட்டாத உயரமாயிருக்கும்; அவன் நியாயஸ்தலத்தில் தன் வாயைத் திறவான்.

7. Wisdom [is] high for a fool, In the gate he openeth not his mouth.

8. தீவினைசெய்ய உபாயஞ்செய்கிறவன் துஷ்டன் என்னப்படுவான்.

8. Whoso is devising to do evil, Him they call a master of wicked thoughts.

9. தீயநோக்கம் பாவமாம்; பரியாசக்காரன் மனுஷருக்கு அருவருப்பானவன்.

9. The thought of folly [is] sin, And an abomination to man [is] a scorner.

10. ஆபத்துக்காலத்தில் நீ சோர்ந்துபோவாயானால், உன் பெலன் குறுகினது.

10. Thou hast shewed thyself weak in a day of adversity, Straitened is thy power,

11. மரணத்துக்கு ஒப்பிக்கப்பட்டவர்களையும், கொலையுண்ணப்போகிறவர்களையும் விடுவிக்கக்கூடுமானால் விடுவி.

11. If [from] delivering those taken to death, And those slipping to the slaughter -- thou keepest back.

12. அதை அறியோம் என்பாயாகில், இருதயங்களைச் சோதிக்கிறவர் அறியாரோ? உன் ஆத்துமாவைக் காக்கிறவர் கவனியாரோ? அவர் மனுஷருக்கு அவனவன் கிரியைக்குத்தக்கதாகப் பலனளியாரோ?

12. When thou sayest, 'Lo, we knew not this.' Is not the Ponderer of hearts He who understandeth? And the Keeper of thy soul He who knoweth? And He hath rendered to man according to his work.

13. என் மகனே, தேனைச் சாப்பிடு, அது நல்லது; கூட்டிலிருந்து ஒழுகும் தேன் உன் வாய்க்கு இன்பமாயிருக்கும்.

13. Eat my son, honey that [is] good, And the honeycomb -- sweet to thy palate.

14. அப்படியே ஞானத்தை அறிந்துகொள்வது உன் ஆத்துமாவுக்கு இன்பமாயிருக்கும்; அதைப் பெற்றுக்கொண்டால், அது முடிவில் உதவும், உன் நம்பிக்கை வீண்போகாது.

14. So [is] the knowledge of wisdom to thy soul, If thou hast found that there is a posterity And thy hope is not cut off.

15. துஷ்டனே, நீ நீதிமானுடைய வாசஸ்தலத்துக்கு விரோதமாய்ப் பதிவிராதே; அவன் தங்கும் இடத்தைப் பாழாக்கிப்போடாதே.

15. Lay not wait, O wicked one, At the habitation of the righteous. Do not spoil his resting-place.

16. நீதிமான் ஏழுதரம் விழுந்தாலும் திரும்பவும் எழுந்திருப்பான்; துன்மார்க்கரோ தீங்கிலே இடறுண்டு கிடப்பார்கள்.

16. For seven [times] doth the righteous fall and rise, And the wicked stumble in evil.

17. உன் சத்துரு விழும்போது சந்தோஷப்படாதே; அவன் இடறும்போது உன் இருதயம் களிகூராதிருப்பதாக.

17. In the falling of thine enemy rejoice not, And in his stumbling let not thy heart be joyful,

18. கர்த்தர் அதைக் காண்பார், அது அவர் பார்வைக்குப் பொல்லாப்பாயிருக்கும்; அப்பொழுது அவனிடத்தினின்று அவர் தமது கோபத்தை நீக்கிவிடுவார்.

18. Lest Jehovah see, and [it be] evil in His eyes, And He hath turned from off him His anger.

19. பொல்லாதவர்களைக்குறித்து எரிச்சலாகாதே; துன்மார்க்கர்மேல் பொறாமை கொள்ளாதே.

19. Fret not thyself at evil doers, Be not envious at the wicked,

20. துன்மார்க்கனுக்கு நல்முடிவு இல்லை; துன்மார்க்கருடைய விளக்கு அணைந்துபோகும்.

20. For there is not a posterity to the evil, The lamp of the wicked is extinguished.

21. என் மகனே, நீ கர்த்தருக்கும் ராஜாவுக்கும் பயந்து நட, கலகக்காரரோடு கலவாதே.

21. Fear Jehovah, my son, and the king, With changers mix not up thyself,

22. சடிதியில் அவர்களுடைய ஆபத்து எழும்பும்; அவர்கள் இருவரின் சங்காரத்தையும் அறிந்தவன் யார்?

22. For suddenly doth their calamity rise, And the ruin of them both -- who knoweth!

23. பின்னும் ஞானமுள்ளவர்களின் புத்திமதிகள் என்னவெனில்: நியாயத்திலே முகதாட்சிணியம் நல்லதல்ல.

23. These also are for the wise: -- To discern faces in judgment is not good.

24. துன்மார்க்கனைப் பார்த்து: நீதிமானாயிருக்கிறாய் என்று சொல்லுகிறவனை ஜனங்கள் சபிப்பார்கள், பிரஜைகள் அவனை வெறுப்பார்கள்.

24. Whoso is saying to the wicked, 'Thou [art] righteous,' Peoples execrate him -- nations abhor him.

25. அவனைக் கடிந்துகொள்ளுகிறவர்கள்மேல் பிரியமுண்டாகும், அவர்களுக்கு உத்தம ஆசீர்வாதம் கிடைக்கும்.

25. And to those reproving it is pleasant, And on them cometh a good blessing.

26. செம்மையான மறுமொழி சொல்லுகிறவன் உதடுகளை முத்தமிடுகிறவனுக்குச் சமானம்.

26. Lips he kisseth who is returning straightforward words.

27. வெளியில் உன் வேலையை எத்தனப்படுத்தி, வயலில் அதை ஒழுங்காக்கி, பின்பு உன் வீட்டைக் கட்டு.

27. Prepare in an out-place thy work, And make it ready in the field -- go afterwards, Then thou hast built thy house.

28. நியாயமின்றிப் பிறனுக்கு விரோதமாய்ச் சாட்சியாக ஏற்படாதே; உன் உதடுகளினால் வஞ்சகம் பேசாதே.

28. Be not a witness for nought against thy neighbour, Or thou hast enticed with thy lips.

29. அவன் எனக்குச் செய்தபிரகாரம் நானும் அவனுக்குச் செய்வேன், அவன் செய்த செய்கைக்குத்தக்கதாக நானும் அவனுக்குச் சரிக்கட்டுவேன் என்று நீ சொல்லாதே.

29. Say not, 'As he did to me, so I do to him, I render to each according to his work.'

30. சோம்பேறியின் வயலையும், மதியீனனுடைய திராட்சத்தோட்டத்தையும் கடந்துபோனேன்.

30. Near the field of a slothful man I passed by, And near the vineyard of a man lacking heart.

31. இதோ, அதெல்லாம் முள்ளுக்காடாயிருந்தது; நிலத்தின் முகத்தைக் காஞ்சொறி மூடினது, அதின் கற்சுவர் இடிந்துகிடந்தது.

31. And lo, it hath gone up -- all of it -- thorns! Covered its face have nettles, And its stone wall hath been broken down.

32. அதைக் கண்டு சிந்தனைபண்ணினேன்; அதை நோக்கிப் புத்தியடைந்தேன்.

32. And I see -- I -- I do set my heart, I have seen -- I have received instruction,

33. இன்னுங்கொஞ்சம் உறங்கட்டும், இன்னுங்கொஞ்சம் கைமுடக்கிக்கொண்டு நித்திரை செய்யட்டும் என்பாயோ?

33. A little sleep -- a little slumber -- A little folding of the hands to lie down.

34. உன் தரித்திரம் வழிப்போக்கனைப்போலும் உன் வறுமை ஆயுதமணிந்தவனைப்போலும் வரும்.

34. And thy poverty hath come [as] a traveller, And thy want as an armed man!
