1. என் கண்களோடே உடன்படிக்கைபண்ணின நான் ஒரு கன்னிகையின்மேல் நினைப்பாயிருப்பதெப்படி?

1. If I have made an agreement with my eyes and entertained any thoughts against a maiden;

2. அப்பொழுது உன்னதங்களிலிருந்து தேவன் அளிக்கும் பங்கும், உன்னதத்திலிருந்து சர்வவல்லவர் கொடுக்கும் சுதந்தரமும் கிடைக்குமோ?

2. But what is man's lot from God above, his inheritance from the Almighty on high?

3. மாறுபாடானவனுக்கு ஆபத்தும், அக்கிரமச் செய்கைக்காரருக்கு ஆக்கினையுமல்லவோ கிடைக்கும்.

3. Is it not calamity for the unrighteous, and woe for evildoers?

4. அவர் என் வழிகளைப் பார்த்து, என் நடைகளையெல்லாம் எண்ணுகிறார் அல்லவோ?

4. Does he not see my ways, and number all my steps?

5. நான் மாயையிலே நடந்தேனோ, என் கால் கபடுசெய்யத் தீவிரித்ததோ என்று,

5. If I have walked in falsehood and my foot has hastened to deceit;

6. சுமுத்திரையான தராசிலே தேவன் என்னை நிறுத்து, என் உத்தமத்தை அறிவாராக.

6. Let God weigh me in the scales of justice; thus will he know my innocence!

7. என் நடைகள் வழியைவிட்டு விலகினதும், என் இருதயம் என் கண்களைப் பின்தொடர்ந்ததும், ஏதாகிலும் ஒரு மாசு என் கைகளில் ஒட்டிக்கொண்டதும் உண்டானால்,

7. If my steps have turned out of the way, and my heart has followed my eyes, or any stain clings to my hands,

8. அப்பொழுது நான் விதைத்ததை வேறொருவன் புசிப்பானாக; என் பயிர்கள் வேரற்றுப்போகக்கடவது.

8. Then may I sow, but another eat of it, or may my planting be rooted up!

9. என் மனம் யாதொரு ஸ்திரீயின்மேல் மயங்கி, அயலானுடைய வாசலை நான் எட்டிப்பார்த்ததுண்டானால்,

9. If my heart has been enticed toward a woman, and I have lain in wait at my neighbor's door;

10. அப்பொழுது என் மனைவி வேறொருவனுக்கு மாவரைப்பாளாக; வேற்று மனிதர் அவள்மேல் சாய்வார்களாக.

10. Then may my wife grind for another, and may others cohabit with her!

11. அது தோஷம், அது நியாயாதிபதிகளால் விசாரிக்கப்படும் அக்கிரமமாமே.

11. For that would be heinous, a crime to be condemned;

12. அது பாதாளபரியந்தம் பட்சிக்கும் அக்கினியாய் என் சம்பத்தையெல்லாம் நிர்மூலமாக்கும்.

12. A fire that should burn down to the abyss till it consumed all my possessions to the roots.

13. என் வேலைக்காரனானாலும், என் வேலைக்காரியானாலும், என்னோடு வழக்காடும்போது, அவர்கள் நியாயத்தை நான் அசட்டைபண்ணியிருந்தால்,

13. Had I refused justice to my manservant or to my maid, when they had a claim against me,

14. தேவன் எழும்பும்போது, நான் என்ன செய்வேன்; அவர் விசாரிக்கும்போது, நான் அவருக்கு என்ன மறுஉத்தரவு சொல்லுவேன்.

14. What then should I do when God rose up; what could I answer when he demanded an account?

15. தாயின் கர்ப்பத்தில் என்னை உண்டுபண்ணினவர் அவனையும் உண்டுபண்ணினார் அல்லவோ? ஒரேவிதமான கர்ப்பத்தில் எங்களை உருவாக்கினார் அல்லவோ?

15. Did not he who made me in the womb make him? Did not the same One fashion us before our birth?

16. எளியவர்கள் வாஞ்சித்ததை நான் கொடாதிருந்து, விதவையின் கண்களைப் பூத்துப்போகப்பண்ணி,

16. If I have denied anything to the poor, or allowed the eyes of the widow to languish

17. தாய்தகப்பனில்லாத பிள்ளை என் ஆகாரத்தில் சாப்பிடாமல், நான் ஒருவனாய்ச் சாப்பிட்டதுண்டோ?

17. While I ate my portion alone, with no share in it for the fatherless,

18. என் சிறுவயதுமுதல் அவன் தகப்பனிடத்தில் வளர்வதுபோல என்னோடே வளர்ந்தான்; நான் என் தாயின் கர்ப்பத்திலே பிறந்ததுமுதல் அப்படிப்பட்டவர்களைக் கைலாகுகொடுத்து நடத்தினேன்.

18. Though like a father God has reared me from my youth, guiding me even from my mother's womb--

19. ஒருவன் உடுப்பில்லாததினால் மடிந்துபோகிறதையும், ஏழைக்கு மூட வஸ்திரமில்லாதிருக்கிறதையும் நான் கண்டபோது,

19. If I have seen a wanderer without clothing, or a poor man without covering,

20. அவன் என் ஆட்டுமயிர்க் கம்பளியினாலே அனல்கொண்டதினால், அவன் இடை என்னைப் புகழாதிருந்ததும்,

20. Whose limbs have not blessed me when warmed with the fleece of my sheep;

21. ஒலிமுகவாசலில் எனக்குச் செல்வாக்கு உண்டென்று நான் கண்டு, திக்கற்றவனுக்கு விரோதமாய் என் கையை நீட்டினதும் உண்டானால்,

21. If I have raised my hand against the innocent because I saw that I had supporters at the gate--

22. என் கைப்பட்டை தோளிலிருந்து சரிந்து, என் புயத்து எலும்பு முறிந்துபோவதாக.

22. Then may my arm fall from the shoulder, my forearm be broken at the elbow!

23. தேவன் ஆக்கினையிடுவார் என்றும், அவருடைய மகத்துவத்தை உத்தரிக்கக்கூடாது என்றும், எனக்குப் பயங்கரமாயிருந்தது.

23. For the dread of God will be upon me, and his majesty will overpower me.

24. நான் பொன்னின்மேல் என் நம்பிக்கையை வைத்து, தங்கத்தைப்பார்த்து: நீ என் ஆதரவு என்று நான் சொன்னதும்,

24. Had I put my trust in gold or called fine gold my security;

25. என் ஆஸ்திபெரியதென்றும், என் கைக்கு மிகுதியும் கிடைத்ததென்றும் நான் மகிழ்ந்ததும்,

25. Or had I rejoiced that my wealth was great, or that my hand had acquired abundance--

26. சூரியன் பிரகாசிக்கும்போதும், அல்லது சந்திரன் மகிமையாய்ச் செல்லும்போதும், நான் அதை நோக்கி:

26. Had I looked upon the sun as it shone, or the moon in the splendor of its progress,

27. என் மனம் இரகசியமாய் மயக்கப்பட்டு, என் வாய் என் கையை முத்தி செய்ததுண்டானால்,

27. And had my heart been secretly enticed to waft them a kiss with my hand;

28. இதுவும் நியாயாதிபதிகளால் விசாரிக்கப்படத்தக்க அக்கிரமமாயிருக்கும்; அதினால் உன்னதத்திலிருக்கிற தேவனை மறுதலிப்பேனே.

28. This too would be a crime for condemnation, for I should have denied God above.

29. என் பகைஞனுடைய ஆபத்திலே நான் மகிழ்ந்து, பொல்லாப்பு அவனுக்கு நேரிட்டபோது களிகூர்ந்திருந்தேனோ?

29. Had I rejoiced at the destruction of my enemy or exulted when evil fell upon him,

30. அவன் ஜீவனுக்குச் சாபத்தைக் கொடுக்கும்படி விரும்பி, வாயினால் பாவஞ்செய்ய நான் இடங்கொடுக்கவில்லை.

30. Even though I had not suffered my mouth to sin by uttering a curse against his life--

31. அவன் இனத்தார்களில் திருப்தியாகாதவனைக் காண்பிப்பவன் யாரென்று என் கூடாரத்தின் மனுஷர் சொல்லார்களோ?

31. Had not the men of my tent exclaimed, 'Who has not been fed with his meat!'

32. பரதேசி வீதியிலே இராத்தங்கினதில்லை; வழிப்போக்கனுக்கு என் வாசல்களைத் திறந்தேன்.

32. Because no stranger lodged in the street, but I opened my door to wayfarers--

33. நான் ஆதாமைப்போல என் மீறுதல்களை மூடி, என் அக்கிரமத்தை என் மடியிலே ஒளித்துவைத்தேனோ?

33. Had I, out of human weakness, hidden my sins and buried my guilt in my bosom

34. திரளான என் கூட்டத்துக்கு நான் பயந்ததினாலாவது, இனத்தார் ஜனத்தார் பண்ணும் இகழ்ச்சி என்னைத் திடுக்கிடப்பண்ணினதினாலாவது, நான் பேசாதிருந்து, வாசற்படியை விட்டுப் புறப்படாதிருந்தேனோ?

34. Because I feared the noisy multitude and the scorn of the tribes terrified me- then I should have remained silent, and not come out of doors!

35. ஆ, என் வழக்கைக் கேட்கிறவன் ஒருவன் இருந்தால் நலமாயிருக்கும்; இதோ, சர்வவல்லவர் எனக்கு உத்தரவு அருளிச்செய்யவும், என் எதிராளி தன் வழக்கை எழுதிக்கொடுக்கவும் எனக்கு விருப்பமுண்டு.

35. Oh, that I had one to hear my case, and that my accuser would write out his indictment!

36. அதை நான் என் தோளின்மேல் வைத்து, எனக்குக் கிரீடமாகத் தரித்துக்கொள்வேனே.

36. Surely, I should wear it on my shoulder or put it on me like a diadem;

37. அவனுக்கு நான் என் நடைகளைத் தொகை தொகையாய்க் காண்பித்து, ஒரு பிரபுவைப்போல அவனிடத்தில் போவேன்.

37. Of all my steps I should give him an account; like a prince I should present myself before him. This is my final plea; let the Almighty answer me! The words of Job are ended.

38. எனக்கு விரோதமாக என் காணி பூமி கூப்பிடுகிறதும், அதின் படைச்சால்கள்கூட அழுகிறதும்,

38. If my land has cried out against me till its very furrows complained;

39. கூலிகொடாமல் நான் அதின் பலனைப் புசித்து, பயிரிட்டவர்களின் ஆத்துமாவை உபத்திரவப்படுத்தினதும் உண்டானால்,

39. If I have eaten its produce without payment and grieved the hearts of its tenants;

40. அதில் கோதுமைக்குப் பதிலாக முள்ளும், வாற்கோதுமைக்குப் பதிலாகக் களையும் முளைக்கக்கடவது என்றான். யோபின் வார்த்தைகள் முடிந்தது.

40. Then let the thistles grow instead of wheat and noxious weeds instead of barley!
