1. அப்பொழுது தேமானியனாகிய எலிப்பாஸ் பிரதியுத்தரமாக:

1. Then Eliphaz the Temanite answered and said,

2. ஞானவான் காற்றைப்போன்ற நியாயங்களைச் சொல்லி, தன் வயிற்றைக் கொண்டல்காற்றினால் நிரப்பி,

2. Will a wise man give for answer a [mere] breath of wisdom? And does he fill up the pain of his belly,

3. பிரயோஜனமில்லாத வார்த்தைகளாலும், உபயோகமில்லாத வசனங்களாலும் தர்க்கிக்கலாமோ?

3. reasoning with improper sayings, and with words in which is no profit?

4. நீர் பயபக்தியை வீணென்று சொல்லி, தேவனுக்கு முன்பாக ஜெபத்தியானத்தைக் குறையப்பண்ணுகிறீர்.

4. Have you not cast off fear, and accomplished such words before the Lord?

5. உம்முடைய வாய் உம்முடைய அக்கிரமத்தைச் சொல்லிக்காட்டுகிறது; நீர் தந்திரமுள்ளவர்களின் நாவைத் தெரிந்துகொண்டீர்.

5. You are guilty by the words of your mouth, neither have you discerned the words of the Mighty.

6. நான் அல்ல, உம்முடைய வாயே உம்மைக் குற்றவாளி என்று தீர்க்கிறது; உம்முடைய உதடுகளே உமக்கு விரோதமாகச் சாட்சியிடுகிறது.

6. Let your own mouth reprove you, and not me, and your lips shall testify against you.

7. மனுஷரில் முந்திப் பிறந்தவர் நீர் தானோ? பர்வதங்களுக்குமுன்னே உருவாக்கப்பட்டீரோ?

7. What! Are you the first man that was born? Or were you established before the hills?

8. நீர் தேவனுடைய இரகசிய ஆலோசனையைக் கேட்டு, ஞானத்தை உம்மிடமாய்ச் சேர்த்துக்கொண்டீரோ?

8. Or have you heard the ordinance of the Lord? Or has God used you as [His] counselor? Has wisdom come [only] to you?

9. நாங்கள் அறியாத எந்தக் காரியத்தை நீர் அறிந்திருக்கிறீர்? எங்களுக்கு விளங்காத எந்தக் காரியமாவது உமக்கு விளங்கியிருக்கிறதோ?

9. For what you know, do we know not? Or what you understand, do we not also?

10. உம்முடைய தகப்பனைப்பார்க்கிலும் பெரிய வயதுள்ள நரைத்தோரும் விருத்தாப்பியரும் எங்களுக்குள் இருக்கிறார்களே.

10. Truly among us are both the old and very aged man, more advanced in days than your father.

11. தேவன் அருளிய ஆறுதல்களும், உம்மோடே சொல்லப்படுகிற மிருதுவான பேச்சும் உமக்கு அற்பகாரியமாயிருக்கிறதோ?

11. You have been scourged for but a few of your sins; you have spoken haughtily and extravagantly.

12. உம்முடைய இருதயம் உம்மை எங்கே கொண்டுபோகிறது? உம்முடைய கண்கள் நெறித்துப்பார்க்கிறது என்ன?

12. What has your heart dared? Or what have your eyes [aimed at],

13. தேவனுக்கு விரோதமாக உம்முடைய ஆவியை எழுப்பி உம்முடைய வாயிலிருந்து வசனங்களைப் புறப்படப்பண்ணுகிறீர்.

13. that you have vented [your] rage before the Lord, and delivered such words from [your] mouth?

14. மனுஷனானவன் பரிசுத்தமாயிருக்கிறதற்கும், ஸ்திரீயினிடத்தில் பிறந்தவன் நீதிமானாயிருக்கிறதற்கும், அவன் எம்மாத்திரம்?

14. For who, being a mortal, [is such] that he shall be blameless? Or [who that is] born of a woman, that he should be just?

15. இதோ, தம்முடைய பரிசுத்தவான்களையும் அவர் நம்புகிறதில்லை; வானங்களும் அவர் பார்வைக்குச் சுத்தமானவைகள் அல்ல.

15. Forasmuch as He trusts not His saints, and the heaven is not pure before Him.

16. அநியாயத்தைத் தண்ணீரைப்போலக் குடிக்கிற மனுஷன் எத்தனை அதிகமாய் அருவருப்பும் அசுத்தமுமாயிருக்கிறான்?

16. Alas then, abominable and unclean is man, drinking unrighteousness as a draught.

17. உமக்குக் காரியத்தைத் தெரியப்பண்ணுவேன் என்னைக் கேளும்; நான் கண்டதை உமக்கு விவரித்துச் சொல்லுவேன்.

17. But I will tell you, listen to me; I will tell you now what I have seen;

18. ஞானிகள் தங்கள் பிதாக்கள் சொல்லக் கேட்டு மறைக்காமல் அறிவித்ததையே நான் சொல்லுவேன்.

18. things wise men say, and their fathers have not hidden.

19. அவர்களுக்குமாத்திரம் பூமி அளிக்கப்பட்டது; அந்நியர் அவர்கள் நடுவே கடந்துபோக இடமில்லை.

19. To them alone the earth was given, and no stranger came upon them.

20. துன்மார்க்கன் உயிரோடிருக்கிற நாளெல்லாம் துன்பத்தால் வாதிக்கப்படுகிறான்; பலவந்தம்பண்ணுகிறவனுக்கு அவன் வருஷங்களின் தொகை மறைக்கப்பட்டிருக்கிறது.

20. All the life of the ungodly [is spent] in care, and the years granted to the oppressor are numbered.

21. பயங்கரமான சத்தம் அவன் காதுகளில் தொனிக்கிறது; அவன் சமாதானமாயிருக்கையில் பாழாக்கிறவன் அவன்மேல் வருவான்.

21. And his terror is in his ears: just when he seems to be at peace, his overthrow will come.

22. இருளிலிருந்து திரும்பிவர அவனுக்கு நம்பிக்கையில்லாமல், பதிவிருக்கிறவர்களின் பட்டயத்துக்கு அவன் பயப்படுகிறான்.

22. Let him not trust that he shall return from darkness, for he has been already made over to the power of the sword.

23. அப்பம் எங்கே கிடைக்கும் என்று அவன் அலைந்து திரிகிறான்; அந்தகாரநாள் தனக்குச் சமீபித்திருக்கிறதை அறிவான்.

23. And he has been appointed to be food for vultures, and he knows within himself that he is doomed to be a carcass: and a dark day shall carry him away as with a whirlwind.

24. இக்கட்டும் நெருக்கமும் அவனைக் கலங்கப்பண்ணி, யுத்தசன்னத்தனான ராஜாவைப்போல அவனை மேற்கொள்ளும்.

24. Distress also and anguish shall come upon him: he shall fall as a captain in the first rank.

25. அவன் தேவனுக்கு விரோதமாகக் கைநீட்டி, சர்வவல்லவருக்கு விரோதமாகப் பராக்கிரமம் பாராட்டுகிறான்.

25. For he has lifted his hands against the Lord, and he has hardened his neck against the Almighty Lord.

26. கடினக்கழுத்தோடும், பருத்த குமிழுள்ள தன் கேடயங்களோடும் அவருக்கு எதிராக ஓடுகிறான்.

26. And he has run against Him with insolence, on the thickness of the back of his shield.

27. அவன் முகத்தைக் கொழுப்பு மூடியிருக்கிறது; அடிவயிறு தொந்திவிட்டிருக்கிறது.

27. For he has covered his face with his fat, and made layers of fat upon his thighs.

28. ஆனாலும் பாழான பட்டணங்களிலும், குடிபோன கற்குவியலான வீடுகளிலும் வாசம்பண்ணுவான்.

28. And let him lodge in desolate cities, and enter into houses without inhabitant: and what they have prepared, others shall carry away.

29. அவன் ஐசுவரியவானாவதுமில்லை, அவன் ஆஸ்தி நிலைப்பதுமில்லை; அப்படிப்பட்டவர்களின் செல்வம் பூமியில் நீடித்திருப்பதில்லை.

29. Neither shall he grow rich, nor shall his substance remain: he shall not cast a shadow upon the earth.

30. இருளுக்கு அவன் தப்புவதில்லை; அக்கினி ஜூவாலை அவனுடைய கிளையைக் காய்ந்துபோகப்பண்ணும்; அவருடைய வாயின் சுவாசத்தால் அற்றுப்போவான்;

30. And he shall by no means escape the darkness: let the wind blast his blossom, and let his flower fall off.

31. வழிதப்பினவன் மாயையை நம்பானாக; நம்பினால் மாயையே அவன் பலனாயிருக்கும்.

31. Let him not think that he shall endure, for his end shall be vanity.

32. அது அவன் நாள் வருமுன்னே அவனுக்குப் பூரணமாய்ப் பலிக்கும்; அவனுடைய கொப்புப் பச்சைகொள்வதில்லை.

32. His harvest shall perish before the time, and his branch shall not flourish.

33. பிஞ்சுகள் உதிர்ந்துபோகிற திராட்சச்செடியைப்போலவும், பூக்கள் உதிர்ந்து போகிற ஒலிவமரத்தைப் போலவும் அவன் இருப்பான்.

33. And let him be gathered as the unripe grape before the time, and let him fall as the blossom of the olive.

34. மாயக்காரரின் கூட்டம் வெறுமையாய்ப்போகும்; பரிதானம் வாங்கினவர்களின் கூடாரங்களை அக்கினி பட்சிக்கும்.

34. For death is the witness of an ungodly man, and fire shall burn the houses of them that receive gifts.

35. அப்படிப்பட்டவன் அநியாயத்தைக் கர்ப்பந்தரித்து அக்கிரமத்தைப் பெறுகிறான்; அவர்கள் கர்ப்பம் மாயையைப் பிறப்பிக்கும் என்றான்.

35. And he shall conceive sorrows, and his end shall be vanity, and his belly shall bear deceit.
