1. சாமுவேலின் வார்த்தை இஸ்ரவேலுக்கெல்லாம் வந்தது. இஸ்ரவேலர்: பெலிஸ்தருக்கு விரோதமாய் யுத்தஞ்செய்யப்புறப்பட்டு, எபெனேசருக்குச் சமீபத்தில் பாளயமிறங்கினார்கள்; பெலிஸ்தரோ ஆப்பெக்கிலே பாளயமிறங்கியிருந்தார்கள்.

1. And Samuel spake vnto all Israel: And Israel went out against the Philistines to battell, and pitched besyde the Eben ezer, and the Philistines pitched in Aphec,

2. பெலிஸ்தர் இஸ்ரவேலருக்கு விரோதமாய் அணிவகுத்து நின்றார்கள்; யுத்தம் அதிகரித்து, இஸ்ரவேலர் பெலிஸ்தருக்கு முன்பாக முறிய அடிக்கப்பட்டார்கள்; அவர்கள் சேனையில் போர்க்களத்திலே ஏறக்குறைய நாலாயிரம்பேர் வெட்டுண்டுபோனார்கள்.

2. And put them selues in aray against Israel: and when they ioyned the battell, Israel was smytten downe before the Philistines, and the Philistines slue of the armie in the fielde about a foure thousand men.

3. ஜனங்கள் திரும்பப் பாளயத்துக்கு வந்தபோது, இஸ்ரவேலின் மூப்பரானவர்கள், இன்று கர்த்தர் பெலிஸ்தருக்கு முன்பாக நம்மை முறிய அடித்ததென்ன? சீலோவிலிருக்கிற கர்த்தருடைய உடன்படிக்கைப்பெட்டியைக் கொண்டுவருவோம்; அது நம்மை நம்முடைய பகைஞரின் கைக்கு விலக்கி இரட்சிக்கும்படி, நம்முடைய நடுவிலே வரவேண்டியது என்றார்கள்.

3. And when the people were come into their tentes, the elders of Israel sayde: Wherfore hath the Lorde caste vs downe this day before the Philistines? let vs fetch the arke of the appoyntmet of the Lorde out of Silo vnto vs, that when it cometh among vs, it may saue vs out of the hand of our enemies.

4. அப்படியே கேருபீன்களின் மத்தியிலே வாசமாயிருக்கிற சேனைகளின் கர்த்தருடைய உடன்படிக்கைப்பெட்டியை எடுத்துவர, ஜனங்கள் சீலோவுக்குச் சொல்லியனுப்பினார்கள்; அங்கே ஏலியின் இரண்டு குமாரராகிய ஓப்னியும் பினெகாசும் தேவனுடைய உடன்படிக்கைப் பெட்டியண்டையில் இருந்தார்கள்.

4. And so the people went to Silo, and fet from thence the arke of the appoyntment of the Lorde of hoastes, which dwelleth betweene the cherubims: And there wer the two sonnes of Eli, Hophni and Phinehes, with the arke of the appoyntment of God.

5. கர்த்தருடைய உடன்படிக்கைப்பெட்டி பாளயத்திலே வருகிறபோது, இஸ்ரவேலரெல்லாரும் பூமி அதிரத்தக்கதாக மகா ஆர்ப்பரிப்பாய்ச் சத்தமிட்டார்கள்.

5. And when the arke of the appoyntment of the Lorde came into the hoast, all Israel showted a mightie showte, so that the earth rang againe.

6. அவர்கள் ஆர்ப்பரிக்கிற சத்தத்தைப் பெலிஸ்தர் கேட்டபோது: எபிரெயருடைய பாளயத்தில் இந்த மகா ஆர்ப்பரிப்பின் சத்தம் என்ன என்றார்கள்; பின்பு கர்த்தரின் பெட்டி பாளயத்தில் வந்தது என்று அறிந்துகொண்டார்கள்.

6. And when the Philistines heard the noyse of the showte, they saide: What meaneth the sounde of this mightie showte in the hoast of the Ebrues? And they vnderstode howe that the arke of the Lorde was come into the hoast.

7. தேவன் பாளயத்தில் வந்தார் என்று சொல்லப்பட்டபடியினால், பெலிஸ்தர் பயந்து, ஐயோ, நமக்கு மோசம் வந்தது; இதற்குமுன் ஒருபோதும் இப்படி நடக்கவில்லையே.

7. And the Philistines were afraide, and saide: God is come into the hoast. And they said againe: Wo vnto vs, for it was neuer so before this.

8. ஐயோ, அந்த மகத்துவமான தேவர்களின் கைக்கு நம்மைத் தப்புவிப்பவர் யார்? எகிப்தியரைச் சகலவித வாதைகளினாலும் வனாந்தரத்திலே அடித்த தேவர்கள் இவர்கள்தானே.

8. Wo vnto vs, who shall deliuer vs out of the hand of these mightie goddes? these are the goddes that smote the Egyptians with many plagues in the wildernes.

9. பெலிஸ்தரே, திடங்கொண்டு புருஷரைப்போல நடந்துகொள்ளுங்கள்; எபிரெயர் உங்களுக்கு அடிமைகளாயிருந்ததுபோல, நீங்களும் அவர்களுக்கு அடிமைகளாகாதபடிக்கு, புருஷராயிருந்து, யுத்தம்பண்ணுங்கள் என்று சொல்லிக்கொண்டார்கள்.

9. Be strong and quite your selues lyke men, O ye Philistines, that ye be no seruaunts vnto the Ebrues, as they haue ben to you: Be of a manly corage therfore and fight.

10. அப்பொழுது பெலிஸ்தர் யுத்தம்பண்ணினார்கள்; இஸ்ரவேலர் முறிந்து, அவரவர் தங்கள் கூடாரங்களுக்கு ஓடிப்போனார்கள்; மகா பெரிய சங்காரம் உண்டாயிற்று; இஸ்ரவேலிலே முப்பதினாயிரம் காலாட்கள் விழுந்தார்கள்.

10. And the Philistines fought, and Israel was smitten downe, and fled euery man into his tent: And there was an exceeding great slaughter, for there were ouerthrowen of Israel thirtie thousand footemen.

11. தேவனுடைய பெட்டி பிடிக்கப்பட்டது; ஏலியின் இரண்டு குமாரராகிய ஓப்னியும் பினெகாசும் மாண்டார்கள்.

11. And the arke of God was taken, and the two sonnes of Eli, Hophni & Phinehes, were dead.

12. பென்யமீன் கோத்திரத்தானாகிய ஒருவன் படையிலிருந்து ஓடி, தன் வஸ்திரங்களைக் கிழித்து, தன் தலையின்மேல் புழுதியை வாரிப்போட்டுக்கொண்டு, அன்றையதினமே சீலோவுக்கு வந்தான்.

12. And there ran a man of Beniamin out of the armie, and came to Silo the same day with his clothes rent, and earth vpon his head.

13. அவன் வந்தபோது: ஏலி ஒரு ஆசனத்தின்மேல் உட்கார்ந்து வழியைப் பார்த்துக்கொண்டிருந்தான்; தேவனுடைய பெட்டிக்காக அவன் இருதயம் தத்தளித்துக்கொண்டிருந்தது, ஊரிலே செய்தியை அறிவிக்க அந்த மனுஷன் வந்தபோது, ஊரெங்கும் புலம்பல் உண்டாயிற்று.

13. And when he came, lo, Eli sat vpon a stoole by the way side, wayting: for his heart feared for the arke of God. And when the man came into the citie, and tolde it, all the citie cryed.

14. புலம்புகிற இந்தச் சத்தத்தை ஏலி கேட்டபோது: இந்த அமளியின் இரைச்சல் என்ன என்று கேட்டான்; அப்பொழுது அந்த மனுஷன் தீவிரித்து வந்து, ஏலிக்கு அறிவித்தான்.

14. And when Eli heard the noyse of the crying, he saide: What meaneth this noyse of the tumult? And the man came in hastyly, and tolde Eli.

15. ஏலி தொண்ணூற்றெட்டு வயதுள்ளவனாயிருந்தான்; அவன் பார்க்கக்கூடாதபடிக்கு, அவன் கண்கள் மங்கலாயிருந்தது.

15. Eli was 98 yeres olde, & his sight failed, him that he could not see.

16. அந்த மனுஷன் ஏலியைப் பார்த்து: படையிலிருந்து வந்தவன் நான்தான்; இன்றுதான் படையிலிருந்து ஓடிவந்தேன் என்றான். அப்பொழுது அவன்: என் மகனே, நடந்த காரியம் என்ன என்று கேட்டான்.

16. And the man said vnto Eli: I am he that came out of the armie, & fled this day out of the hoast. And he said: What thing is done my sonne?

17. செய்தி கொண்டுவந்தவன் பிரதியுத்தரமாக: இஸ்ரவேலர் பெலிஸ்தருக்கு முன்பாக முறிந்தோடிப்போனார்கள்; ஜனங்களுக்குள்ளே பெரிய சங்காரம் உண்டாயிற்று; உம்முடைய குமாரராகிய ஓப்னி பினெகாஸ் என்னும் இருவரும் இறந்துபோனார்கள்; தேவனுடைய பெட்டியும் பிடிபட்டுப்போயிற்று என்றான்.

17. The messenger aunswered, and said: Israel is fled before the Philistines, & there hath ben a great slaughter among the people, and thy two sonnes Hophni and Phinehes are dead, and the arke of God is taken.

18. அவன் தேவனுடைய பெட்டியைக் குறித்துச் சொன்னவுடனே, ஏலி ஆசனத்திலிருந்து வாசலின் பக்கமாய் மல்லாக்க விழுந்தான்; அவன் கிழவனும் ஸ்தூலித்தவனுமாயிருந்தபடியால், அவன் பிடரி முறிந்து செத்துப்போனான். அவன் இஸ்ரவேலை நாற்பது வருஷம் நியாயம் விசாரித்தான்.

18. And when he made mention of the arke of God, Eli fell from of his stoole backward by the side of the gate, and his necke brake, and he dyed: For he was an olde man and heauy, and iudged Israel fourtie yeres?

19. பினெகாசின் மனைவியாகிய அவன் மருமகள் நிறைகர்ப்பிணியாயிருந்தாள்; அவள் தேவனுடைய பெட்டி பிடிபட்ட செய்தியையும், தன் மாமனும் தன் புருஷனும் இறந்து போனதையும் கேள்விப்பட்டபோது, அவள் கர்ப்பவேதனைப்பட்டு குனிந்து பிரசவித்தாள்.

19. And his daughter in lawe Phinehes wyfe was with childe, and nye the birth: And when she heard the tidinges that the arke of God was taken, and that her father in law and her husband were dead, she bowed her selfe, and trauayled, for her paynes came vpon her.

20. அவள் சாகப்போகிற நேரத்தில் அவளண்டையிலே நின்ற ஸ்திரீகள்: நீ பயப்படாதே, ஆண்பிள்ளையைப் பெற்றாய் என்றார்கள்; அவளோ அதற்கு ஒன்றும் சொல்லவுமில்லை, அதின்மேல் சிந்தைவைக்கவுமில்லை.

20. And about the tyme of her death, the women that stoode about her, saide vnto her: Feare not, for thou hast borne a sonne. But she aunswered not, nor regarded it.

21. தேவனுடைய பெட்டி பிடிபட்டு, அவளுடைய மாமனும் அவளுடைய புருஷனும் இறந்துபோனபடியினால், அவள்: மகிமை இஸ்ரவேலை விட்டுப் போயிற்று என்று சொல்லி, அந்தப் பிள்ளைக்கு இக்கபோத் என்று பேரிட்டாள்.

21. And she named the childe Ichabod, saying: The glorie is departed fro Israel, (because the arke of God was taken, and because of her father in lawe and her husband.)

22. தேவனுடைய பெட்டி பிடிபட்டுப்போனபடியினால், மகிமை இஸ்ரவேலை விட்டு விலகிப்போயிற்று என்றாள்.

22. And she saide againe: The glorie is gone from Israel, for the arke of God is taken.
