1. தாவீது நோபிலிருக்கிற ஆசாரியனாகிய அகிமெலேக்கினிடத்தில் போனான்; அகிமெலேக்கு நடுக்கத்தோடே தாவீதுக்கு எதிர்கொண்டுபோய்: ஒருவரும் உம்மோடே கூடவராமல், நீர் ஒண்டியாய் வருகிறது என்ன என்று அவனைக் கேட்டான்.

1. And David cometh in to Nob, unto Ahimelech the priest, and Ahimelech trembleth at meeting David, and saith to him, 'Wherefore [art] thou thyself alone, and no man with thee?'

2. தாவீது ஆசாரியனாகிய அகிமெலேக்கைப் பார்த்து: ராஜா எனக்கு ஒரு காரியத்தைக் கட்டளையிட்டு, நான் உன்னை அனுப்பின காரியமும் உனக்குக் கட்டளையிட்டதும் இன்னதென்று ஒருவரும் அறியாதிருக்கவேண்டும் என்று என்னோடே சொன்னார்; இன்ன இடத்திற்கு வரவேண்டும் என்று சேவகருக்குச் சொல்லியிருக்கிறேன்.

2. And David saith to Ahimelech the priest, 'The king hath commanded me a matter, and he saith unto me, Let no man know anything of the matter about which I am sending thee, and which I have commanded thee; and the young men I have caused to know at such and such a place;

3. இப்போதும் உம்முடைய கையில் இருக்கிறது என்ன? ஐந்து அப்பமாகிலும், என்னவாகிலும், இருக்கிறதை என் கையிலே கொடும் என்றான்.

3. and now, what is there under thy hand? five loaves give into my hand, or that which is found.'

4. ஆசாரியன் தாவீதுக்குப் பிரதியுத்தரமாக: பரிசுத்த அப்பம் இருக்கிறதே ஒழிய, சாதாரண அப்பம் என் கையில் இல்லை; வாலிபர் ஸ்திரீகளோடே மாத்திரம் சேராதிருந்தால் கொடுப்பேன் என்றான்.

4. And the priest answereth David, and saith, 'There is no common bread under my hand, but there is holy bread; if the youths have been kept only from women.'

5. தாவீது ஆசாரியனுக்குப் பிரதியுத்தரமாக: நான் புறப்படுகிறதற்கு முன் நேற்றும் முந்தாநாளும் ஸ்திரீகள் எங்களுக்கு விலக்கமாயிருந்தார்கள்; வாலிபருடைய அசம்பிகளும் சுத்தமாயிருக்கிறது; இன்றையதினம் வேறே அப்பம் பாத்திரத்தில் பிரதிஷ்டைபண்ணப்பட்டதினால், இது சாதாரணமாயிற்றே என்றான்.

5. And David answereth the priest, and saith to him, 'Surely, if women have been restrained from us as heretofore in my going out, then the vessels of the young men are holy, and it [is] a common way: and also, surely to-day it is sanctified in the vessel.'

6. அப்பொழுது கர்த்தருடைய சந்நிதியிலிருந்து எடுக்கப்பட்ட சமுகத்தப்பங்களைத்தவிர, வேறே அப்பம் அங்கே இராதபடியினால் ஆசாரியன் அவனுக்குப் பரிசுத்த அப்பத்தைக் கொடுத்தான்; அவைகள் எடுக்கப்படுகிற நாளிலே அதற்குப் பதிலாகச் சூடான அப்பம் வைக்கப்படும்.

6. And the priest giveth to him the holy thing, for there was no bread there except the bread of the Presence which is turned aside from the presence of Jehovah to put hot bread in the day of its being taken away.

7. சவுலுடைய வேலைக்காரரில் ஏதோமியனாகிய தோவேக்கு என்னும் பேருள்ள ஒருவன் அன்றையதினம் அங்கே கர்த்தருடைய சந்நிதியில் தடைபட்டிருந்தான்; அவன் சவுலுடைய மேய்ப்பருக்குத் தலைவனாயிருந்தான்.

7. And there [is] a man of the servants of Saul on that day detained before Jehovah, and his name [is] Doeg the Edomite, chief of the shepherds whom Saul hath.

8. தாவீது அகிமெலேக்கைப் பார்த்து: இங்கே உம்முடைய வசத்தில் ஒரு ஈட்டியானாலும் பட்டயமானாலும் இல்லையா? ராஜாவின் காரியம் அவசரமானபடியினால், என் பட்டயத்தையாகிலும், என் ஆயுதங்களையாகிலும், நான் எடுத்துக்கொண்டுவரவில்லை என்றான்.

8. And David saith to Ahimelech, 'And is there not here under thy hand spear or sword? for neither my sword nor my vessels have I taken in my hand, for the matter of the king was urgent.'

9. அதற்கு ஆசாரியன்: நீர் ஏலே பள்ளத்தாக்கிலே கொன்ற பெலிஸ்தனாகிய கோலியாத்தின் பட்டயம், இதோ, ஏபோத்துக்குப் பின்னாக ஒரு புடவையிலே சுருட்டி வைத்திருக்கிறது; அதை நீர் எடுக்க மனதானால் எடுத்துக்கொண்டுபோம், அதுவே அல்லாமல் வேறொன்றும் இங்கே இல்லை என்றான்; அப்பொழுது தாவீது: அதற்கு நிகரில்லை; அதை எனக்குத் தாரும் என்றான்.

9. And the priest saith, 'The sword of Goliath the Philistine, whom thou didst smite in the valley of Elah, lo, it is wrapped in a garment behind the ephod, if it thou dost take to thyself, take; for there is none other save it in this [place].' And David saith, 'There is none like it -- give it to me.'

10. அன்றையதினம் தாவீது எழுந்து சவுலுக்குத் தப்பியோடி, காத்தின் ராஜாவாகிய ஆகீசிடத்தில் போனான்.

10. And David riseth and fleeth on that day from the face of Saul, and cometh in unto Achish king of Gath;

11. ஆகீசின் ஊழியக்காரர் அவனைப் பார்த்து: தேசத்து ராஜாவாகிய தாவீது இவன் அல்லவோ? சவுல் கொன்றது ஆயிரம், தாவீது கொன்றது பதினாயிரம் என்று இவனைக் குறித்தல்லவோ ஆடல் பாடலோடே கொண்டாடினார்கள் என்றார்கள்.

11. and the servants of Achish say unto him, 'Is not this David king of the land? is it not of this one they sing in dances, saying, 'Saul smote among his thousands, and David among his myriads?'

12. இந்த வார்த்தைகளைத் தாவீது தன் மனதிலே வைத்துக்கொண்டு, காத்தின் ராஜாவாகிய ஆகீசுக்கு மிகவும் பயப்பட்டு,

12. And David layeth these words in his heart, and is exceedingly afraid of the face of Achish king of Gath,

13. அவர்கள் கண்களுக்கு முன்பாகத் தன் முகநாடியை வேறுபடுத்தி, அவர்களிடத்தில் பித்தங்கொண்டவன் போலக் காண்பித்து, வாசற்கதவுகளிலே கீறிக்கொண்டிருந்து, தன் வாயிலிருந்து நுரையைத் தன் தாடியில் விழப்பண்ணிக்கொண்டிருந்தான்.

13. and changeth his behaviour before their eyes, and feigneth himself mad in their hand, and scribbleth on the doors of the gate, and letteth down his spittle unto his beard.

14. அப்பொழுது ஆகீஸ்: தன் ஊழியக்காரரை நோக்கி: இதோ, இந்த மனுஷன் பித்தங்கொண்டவன் என்று காண்கிறீர்களே; இவனை நீங்கள் என்னிடத்தில் கொண்டு வந்தது என்ன?

14. And Achish saith unto his servants, 'Lo, ye see a man acting as a madman; why do ye bring him in unto me?

15. எனக்கு முன்பாகப் பயித்திய சேஷ்டை செய்ய, நீங்கள் இவனைக் கொண்டு வருகிறதற்கு, பயித்தியக்காரர் எனக்குக் குறைவாயிருக்கிறார்களோ? இவன் என் வீட்டிலே வரலாமா என்றான்.

15. A lack of madmen [have] I, that ye have brought in this one to act as a madman by me! doth this one come in unto my house?'
