1. அக்காலத்தில் நாகாஸ் என்னும் அம்மோனியன் வந்து, கீலேயாத்திலிருக்கிற யாபேசை முற்றிக்கைபோட்டான்; அப்பொழுது யாபேசின் மனுஷர் எல்லாரும் நாகாசை நோக்கி: எங்களோடே உடன்படிக்கைபண்ணும்; அப்பொழுது உம்மைச் சேவிப்போம் என்றார்கள்.

1. And Nahash the Ammonite cometh up, and encampeth against Jabesh-Gilead, and all the men of Jabesh say unto Nahash, 'Make with us a covenant, and we serve thee.'

2. அதற்கு அம்மோனியனாகிய நாகாஸ்: நான் உங்கள் ஒவ்வொருவருடைய வலது கண்ணையும் பிடுங்கி, இதினாலே இஸ்ரவேல் எல்லாவற்றின்மேலும் நிந்தைவரப்பண்ணுவதே நான் உங்களோடே பண்ணும் உடன்படிக்கை என்றான்.

2. And Nahash the Ammonite saith unto them, 'For this I covenant with you, by picking out to you every right eye -- and I have put it a reproach on all Israel.'

3. அதற்கு யாபேசின் மூப்பர்கள்: நாங்கள் இஸ்ரவேல் நாடெங்கும் ஸ்தானாபதிகளை அனுப்பும்படி, ஏழு நாள் எங்களுக்குத் தவணைகொடும், எங்களை இரட்சிப்பார் இல்லாவிட்டால், அப்பொழுது உம்மிடத்தில் வருவோம் என்றார்கள்.

3. And the elders of Jabesh say to him, 'Let us alone seven days, and we send messengers into all the border of Israel: and if there is none saving us -- then we have come out unto thee.'

4. அந்த ஸ்தானாபதிகள் சவுலின் ஊராகிய கிபியாவிலே வந்து, ஜனங்களின் காது கேட்க அந்தச் செய்திகளைச் சொன்னார்கள்; அப்பொழுது ஜனங்களெல்லாரும் சத்தமிட்டு அழுதார்கள்.

4. And the messengers come to Gibeah of Saul, and speak the words in the ears of the people, and all the people lift up their voice and weep;

5. இதோ, சவுல் மாடுகளின் பின்னாலே வயலிலிருந்து வந்து, ஜனங்கள் அழுகிற முகாந்தரம் என்ன என்று கேட்டான்; யாபேசின் மனுஷர் சொல்லிய செய்திகளை அவனுக்குத் தெரிவித்தார்கள்.

5. and lo, Saul hath come after the herd out of the field, and Saul saith, 'What -- to the people, that they weep?' and they recount to him the words of the men of Jabesh.

6. சவுல் இந்தச் செய்திகளைக் கேட்டவுடனே, தேவனுடைய ஆவி அவன்மேல் இறங்கினதினால் அவன் மிகவும் கோபம் மூண்டவனாகி,

6. And the Spirit of God doth prosper over Saul, in his hearing these words, and his anger burneth greatly,

7. ஓரிணைமாட்டைப் பிடித்து, துண்டித்து, அந்த ஸ்தானாபதிகள் கையிலே கொடுத்து, இஸ்ரவேலின் நாடுகளுக்கெல்லாம் அனுப்பி: சவுலின் பின்னாலேயும், சாமுவேலின் பின்னாலேயும் புறப்படாதவன் எவனோ, அவனுடைய மாடுகளுக்கு இப்படிச் செய்யப்படும் என்று சொல்லியனுப்பினான்; அப்பொழுது கர்த்தரால் உண்டான பயங்கரம் ஜனத்தின்மேல் வந்ததினால், ஒருமனப்பட்டுப் புறப்பட்டு வந்தார்கள்.

7. and he taketh a couple of oxen, and cutteth them in pieces, and sendeth through all the border of Israel, by the hand of the messengers, saying, 'He who is not coming out after Saul and after Samuel -- thus it is done to his oxen;' and the fear of Jehovah falleth on the people, and they come out as one man.

8. அவர்களைப் பேசேக்கிலே இலக்கம் பார்த்தான்; இஸ்ரவேல் புத்திரரில் மூன்று லட்சம்பேரும், யூதா மனுஷரில் முப்பதினாயிரம்பேரும் இருந்தார்கள்.

8. And he inspecteth them in Bezek, and the sons of Israel are three hundred thousand, and the men of Judah thirty thousand.

9. வந்த ஸ்தானாபதிகளை அவர்கள் நோக்கி: நாளைக்கு வெயில் ஏறுகிறதற்கு முன்னே உங்களுக்கு இரட்சிப்புக் கிடைக்கும் என்று கீலேயாத்திலிருக்கிற யாபேசின் மனுஷருக்குச் சொல்லுங்கள் என்றார்கள்; ஸ்தானாபதிகள் வந்து யாபேசின் மனுஷரிடத்தில் அதை அறிவித்தார்கள்; அதற்கு அவர்கள் சந்தோஷப்பட்டார்கள்.

9. And they say to the messengers who are coming, 'Thus do ye say to the men of Jabesh-Gilead: To-morrow ye have safety -- by the heat of the sun;' and the messengers come and declare to the men of Jabesh, and they rejoice;

10. பின்பு யாபேசின் மனுஷர்: நாளைக்கு உங்களிடத்தில் வருவோம், அப்பொழுது உங்கள் இஷ்டப்படியெல்லாம் எங்களுக்குச் செய்யுங்கள் என்றார்கள்.

10. and the men of Jabesh say [to the Ammonites], 'To-morrow we come out unto you, and ye have done to us according to all that [is] good in your eyes.'

11. மறுநாளிலே சவுல் ஜனங்களை மூன்று படையாக வகுத்து, கிழக்கு வெளுத்துவரும் ஜாமத்தில் பாளயத்திற்குள் வந்து வெயில் ஏறும்வரைக்கும் அம்மோனியரை முறிய அடித்தான்; தப்பினவர்களில் இரண்டுபேராகிலும் சேர்ந்து ஓடிப்போகாதபடி எல்லாரும் சிதறிப்போனார்கள்.

11. And it cometh to pass, on the morrow, that Saul putteth the people in three detachments, and they come into the midst of the camp in the morning-watch, and smite Ammon till the heat of the day; and it cometh to pass that those left are scattered, and there have not been left of them two together.

12. அப்பொழுது ஜனங்கள் சாமுவேலை நோக்கி: சவுலா நமக்கு ராஜாவாயிருக்கப்போகிறவன் என்று சொன்னவர்கள் யார்? அந்த மனுஷரை நாங்கள் கொன்றுபோடும்படிக்கு ஒப்புக்கொடுங்கள் என்றார்கள்.

12. And the people say unto Samuel, 'Who is he that saith, Saul doth reign over us! give ye up the men, and we put them to death.'

13. அதற்குச் சவுல்: இன்றையதினம் ஒருவரும் கொல்லப்படலாகாது; இன்று கர்த்தர் இஸ்ரவேலுக்கு இரட்சிப்பை அருளினார் என்றான்.

13. And Saul saith, 'There is no man put to death on this day, for to-day hath Jehovah wrought salvation in Israel.'

14. அப்பொழுது சாமுவேல் ஜனங்களை நோக்கி: நாம் கில்காலுக்குப் போய், அங்கே ராஜ்யபாரத்தை ஸ்திரப்படுத்துவோம் வாருங்கள் என்றான்.

14. And Samuel saith unto the people, 'Come and we go to Gilgal, and renew the kingdom there;'

15. அப்படியே ஜனங்கள் எல்லாரும் கில்காலுக்குப் போய், அவ்விடத்திலே கர்த்தருடைய சந்நிதியில் சவுலை ராஜாவாக ஏற்படுத்தி, அங்கே கர்த்தருடைய சந்நிதியில் சமாதானபலிகளைச் செலுத்தி, அங்கே சவுலும் இஸ்ரவேல் மனுஷர் யாவரும் மிகவும் சந்தோஷங்கொண்டாடினார்கள்.

15. and all the people go to Gilgal, and cause Saul to reign there before Jehovah in Gilgal, and sacrifice there sacrifices of peace-offerings before Jehovah, and there Saul rejoiceth -- and all the men of Israel -- very greatly.
