1. திராட்சரசம் பரியாசஞ்செய்யும்; மதுபானம் அமளிபண்ணும்; அதினால் மயங்குகிற ஒருவனும் ஞானவானல்ல.

1. Wine [is] a scorner -- strong drink [is] noisy, And any going astray in it is not wise.

2. ராஜாவின் உறுக்குதல் சிங்கத்தின் கெர்ச்சிப்புக்குச் சமானம்; அவனைக் கோபப்படுத்துகிறவன் தன் பிராணனுக்கே துரோகஞ்செய்கிறான்.

2. The fear of a king [is] a growl as of a young lion, He who is causing him to be wroth is wronging his soul.

3. வழக்குக்கு விலகுவது மனுஷனுக்கு மேன்மை; மூடனானவன் எவனும் அதிலே தலையிட்டுக்கொள்வான்.

3. An honour to a man is cessation from strife, And every fool intermeddleth.

4. சோம்பேறி குளிருகிறதென்று உழமாட்டான்; அறுப்பிலே பிச்சைகேட்டாலும் அவனுக்கு ஒன்றுங்கிடையாது.

4. Because of winter the slothful plougheth not, He asketh in harvest, and there is nothing.

5. மனுஷனுடைய இருதயத்திலுள்ள யோசனை ஆழமான தண்ணீர்போலிருக்கிறது; புத்திமானோ அதை மொண்டெடுப்பான்.

5. Counsel in the heart of a man [is] deep water, And a man of understanding draweth it up.

6. மனுஷர் பெரும்பாலும் தங்கள் தயாளத்தைப் பிரசித்தப்படுத்துவார்கள்; உண்மையான மனுஷனைக் கண்டுபிடிப்பவன் யார்?

6. A multitude of men proclaim each his kindness, And a man of stedfastness who doth find?

7. நீதிமான் தன் உத்தமத்திலே நடக்கிறான்; அவனுக்குப்பிறகு அவன் பிள்ளைகளும் பாக்கியவான்களாயிருப்பார்கள்.

7. The righteous is walking habitually in his integrity, O the happiness of his sons after him!

8. நியாயாசனத்தில் வீற்றிருக்கும் ராஜா தன் கண்களினால் சகல பொல்லாப்பையும் சிதறப்பண்ணுகிறான்.

8. A king sitting on a throne of judgment, Is scattering with his eyes all evil,

9. என் இருதயத்தைச் சுத்தமாக்கினேன், என் பாவமறத் துப்புரவானேன் என்று சொல்லத்தக்கவன் யார்?

9. Who saith, 'I have purified my heart, I have been cleansed from my sin?'

10. வெவ்வேறான நிறைகல்லும், வெவ்வேறான மரக்காலும் ஆகிய இவ்விரண்டும் கர்த்தருக்கு அருவருப்பானவைகள்.

10. A stone and a stone, an ephah and an ephah, Even both of them [are] an abomination to Jehovah.

11. பிள்ளையானாலும், அதின் செய்கை சுத்தமோ செம்மையோ என்பது, அதின் நடக்கையினால் விளங்கும்.

11. Even by his actions a youth maketh himself known, Whether his work be pure or upright.

12. கேட்கிற காதும், காண்கிற கண்ணும் ஆகிய இவ்விரண்டையும் கர்த்தர் உண்டாக்கினார்.

12. A hearing ear, and a seeing eye, Jehovah hath made even both of them.

13. தூக்கத்தை விரும்பாதே, விரும்பினால் தரித்திரனாவாய்; கண்விழித்திரு, அப்பொழுது ஆகாரத்தினால் திருப்தியாவாய்.

13. Love not sleep, lest thou become poor, Open thine eyes -- be satisfied [with] bread.

14. கொள்ளுகிறவன்: நல்லதல்ல, நல்லதல்ல என்பான்; போய்விட்டபின்போ மெச்சிக்கொள்வான்.

14. 'Bad, bad,' saith the buyer, And going his way then he boasteth himself.

15. பொன்னும் மிகுதியான முத்துக்களும் உண்டு; அறிவுள்ள உதடுகளோ விலையுயர்ந்த இரத்தினம்.

15. Substance, gold, and a multitude of rubies, Yea, a precious vessel, [are] lips of knowledge.

16. அந்நியனுக்காகப் பிணைப்பட்டவனுடைய வஸ்திரத்தை எடுத்துக்கொள்; அந்நிய ஸ்திரீயினிமித்தம் அவன் கையில் ஈடுவாங்கிக்கொள்.

16. Take his garment when a stranger hath been surety, And for strangers pledge it.

17. வஞ்சனையினால் வந்த போஜனம் மனுஷனுக்கு இன்பமாயிருக்கும்; பின்போ அவனுடைய வாய் பருக்கைக் கற்களால் நிரப்பப்படும்.

17. Sweet to a man [is] the bread of falsehood, And afterwards is his mouth filled [with] gravel.

18. ஆலோசனையினால் எண்ணங்கள் ஸ்திரப்படும்; நல்யோசனை செய்து யுத்தம்பண்ணு.

18. Purposes by counsel thou dost establish, And with plans make thou war.

19. தூற்றிக்கொண்டு திரிகிறவன் இரகசியங்களை வெளிப்படுத்துவான்; ஆதலால் தன் உதடுகளினால் அலப்புகிறவனோடே கலவாதே.

19. A revealer of secret counsels is the busybody, And for a deceiver [with] his lips make not thyself surety.

20. தன் தகப்பனையும் தன் தாயையும் தூஷிக்கிறவனுடைய தீபம் காரிருளில் அணைந்துபோகும்.

20. Whoso is vilifying his father and his mother, Extinguished is his lamp in blackness of darkness.

21. ஆரம்பத்திலே துரிதமாகக் கிடைத்த சுதந்தரம் முடிவிலே ஆசீர்வாதம் பெறாது.

21. An inheritance gotten wrongly at first, Even its latter end is not blessed.

22. தீமைக்குச் சரிக்கட்டுவேன் என்று சொல்லாதே; கர்த்தருக்குக் காத்திரு, அவர் உன்னை இரட்சிப்பார்.

22. Do not say, 'I recompense evil,' Wait for Jehovah, and He delivereth thee.

23. வெவ்வேறான நிறைகற்கள் கர்த்தருக்கு அருவருப்பானவைகள்; கள்ளத்தராசு நல்லதல்ல.

23. An abomination to Jehovah [are] a stone and a stone, And balances of deceit [are] not good.

24. கர்த்தராலே மனுஷருடைய நடைகள் வாய்க்கும்; ஆகையால் மனுஷன் தன் வழியை அறிந்துகொள்வதெப்படி?

24. From Jehovah [are] the steps of a man, And man -- how understandeth he his way?

25. பரிசுத்தமானதை விழுங்குகிறதும், பொருத்தனை செய்தபின்பு யோசிக்கிறதும், மனுஷனுக்குக் கண்ணியாயிருக்கும்.

25. A snare to a man [is] he hath swallowed a holy thing, And after vows to make inquiry.

26. ஞானமுள்ள ராஜா துன்மார்க்கரை சிதறடித்து, அவர்கள்மேல் உருளையை உருட்டுவான்.

26. A wise king is scattering the wicked, And turneth back on them the wheel.

27. மனுஷனுடைய ஆவி கர்த்தர் தந்த தீபமாயிருக்கிறது; அது உள்ளத்தில் உள்ளவைகளையெல்லாம் ஆராய்ந்துபார்க்கும்.

27. The breath of man [is] a lamp of Jehovah, Searching all the inner parts of the heart.

28. தயையும் சத்தியமும் ராஜாவைக் காக்கும்; தயையினாலே தன் சிங்காசனத்தை நிற்கப்பண்ணுவான்.

28. Kindness and truth keep a king, And he hath supported by kindness his throne.

29. வாலிபரின் அலங்காரம் அவர்கள் பராக்கிரமம்; முதிர்வயதானவர்களின் மகிமை அவர்கள் நரை.

29. The beauty of young men is their strength, And the honour of old men is grey hairs.

30. காயத்தின் தழும்புகளும், உள்ளத்தில் உறைக்கும் அடிகளும், பொல்லாதவனை அழுக்கறத் துடைக்கும்.

30. The bandages of a wound thou removest with the evil, Also the plagues of the inner parts of the heart!
