1. ஆபிராமுடைய மனைவியாகிய சாராய்க்குப் பிள்ளையில்லாதிருந்தது. எகிப்து தேசத்தாளாகிய ஆகார் என்னும் பேர்கொண்ட ஒரு அடிமைப்பெண் அவளுக்கு இருந்தாள்.

1. Now Sarai Avram's wife had not borne him a child. But she had an Egyptian slave-girl named Hagar;

2. சாராய் ஆபிராமை நோக்கி: நான் பிள்ளைபெறாதபடிக்குக் கர்த்தர் என் கர்ப்பத்தை அடைத்திருக்கிறார்; என் அடிமைப்பெண்ணோடே சேரும், ஒருவேளை அவளால் என் வீடு கட்டப்படும் என்றாள். சாராயின் வார்த்தைக்கு ஆபிராம் செவிகொடுத்தான்.

2. so Sarai said to Avram, 'Here now, ADONAI has kept me from having children; so go in and sleep with my slave-girl. Maybe I'll be able to have children through her.' Avram listened to what Sarai said.

3. ஆபிராம் கானான்தேசத்தில் பத்து வருஷம் குடியிருந்தபின்பு, ஆபிராமின் மனைவியாகிய சாராய் எகிப்து தேசத்தாளான தன் அடிமைப்பெண்ணாகிய ஆகாரை அழைத்து, அவளைத் தன் புருஷனாகிய ஆபிராமுக்கு மறுமனையாட்டியாகக் கொடுத்தாள்.

3. It was after Avram had lived ten years in the land of Kena'an that Sarai Avram's wife took Hagar the Egyptian, her slave-girl, and gave her to Avram her husband to be his wife.

4. அவன் ஆகாரோடே சேர்ந்தபோது, அவள் கர்ப்பந்தரித்தாள்; அவள் தான் கர்ப்பவதியானதைக் கண்டபோது, தன் நாச்சியாரை அற்பமாக எண்ணினாள்.

4. Avram had sexual relations with Hagar, and she conceived. But when she became aware that she was pregnant, she looked on her mistress with contempt.

5. அப்பொழுது சாராய் ஆபிராமை நோக்கி: எனக்கு நேரிட்ட அநியாயம் உமதுமேல் சுமரும்; என் அடிமைப்பெண்ணை உம்முடைய மடியிலே கொடுத்தேன்; அவள் தான் கர்ப்பவதியானதைக் கண்டு என்னை அற்பமாக எண்ணுகிறாள்; கர்த்தர் எனக்கும் உமக்கும் நடுநின்று நியாயந்தீர்பாராக என்றாள்.

5. Sarai said to Avram, 'This outrage being done to me is your fault! True, I gave my slave-girl to you to sleep with; but when she saw that she was pregnant, she began holding me in contempt. May ADONAI decide who is right- I or you!'

6. அதற்கு ஆபிராம் சாராயை நோக்கி: இதோ, உன் அடிமைப்பெண் உன் கைக்குள் இருக்கிறாள்; உன் பார்வைக்கு நலமானபடி அவளுக்குச் செய் என்றான். அப்பொழுது சாராய் அவளைக் கடினமாய் நடத்தினபடியால் அவள் அவளை விட்டு ஓடிப்போனாள்.

6. However, Avram answered Sarai, 'Look, she's your slave-girl. Deal with her as you think fit.' Then Sarai treated her so harshly that she ran away from her.

7. கர்த்தருடைய தூதனானவர் அவளை வனாந்தரத்திலே சூருக்குப்போகிற வழியருகே இருக்கிற நீரூற்றண்டையில் கண்டு:

7. The angel of ADONAI found her by a spring in the desert, the spring on the road to Shur,

8. சாராயின் அடிமைப்பெண்ணாகிய ஆகாரே, எங்கேயிருந்து வருகிறாய்? எங்கே போகிறாய்? என்று கேட்டார்; அவள்: நான் என் நாச்சியாராகிய சாராயைவிட்டு ஓடிப்போகிறேன் என்றாள்.

8. and said, 'Hagar! Sarai's slave-girl! Where have you come from, and where are you going?' She answered, 'I'm running away from my mistress Sarai.'

9. அப்பொழுது கர்த்தருடைய தூதனானவர்: நீ உன் நாச்சியாரண்டைக்குத் திரும்பிப்போய், அவள் கையின்கீழ் அடங்கியிரு என்றார்.

9. The angel of ADONAI said to her, 'Go back to your mistress, and submit to her authority.'

10. பின்னும் கர்த்தருடைய தூதனானவர் அவளை நோக்கி: உன் சந்ததியை மிகவும் பெருகப்பண்ணுவேன்; அது பெருகி, எண்ணிமுடியாததாயிருக்கும் என்றார்.

10. The angel of ADONAI said to her, 'I will greatly increase your descendants; there will be so many that it will be impossible to count them.'

11. பின்னும் கர்த்தருடைய தூதனானவர் அவளை நோக்கி: நீ கர்ப்பவதியாயிருக்கிறாய், ஒரு குமாரனைப் பெறுவாய்; கர்த்தர் உன் அங்கலாய்ப்பைக் கேட்டபடியினால், அவனுக்கு இஸ்மவேல் என்று பேரிடுவாயாக.

11. The angel of ADONAI said to her, 'Look, you are pregnant, and you will give birth to a son. You are to call him Yishma'el [[God pays attention]] because ADONAI has paid attention to your misery.

12. அவன் துஷ்டமனுஷனாயிருப்பான்; அவனுடைய கை எல்லாருக்கும் விரோதமாகவும், எல்லாருடைய கையும் அவனுக்கு விரோதமாகவும் இருக்கும்; தன் சகோதரர் எல்லாருக்கும் எதிராகக் குடியிருப்பான் என்றார்.

12. He will be a wild donkey of a man, with his hand against everyone and everyone's hand against him, living his life at odds with all his kinsmen.'

13. அப்பொழுது அவள்: என்னைக்காண்பவரை நானும் இவ்விடத்தில் கண்டேன் அல்லவா என்று சொல்லி, தன்னோடே பேசின கர்த்தருக்கு நீர் என்னைக்காண்கிற தேவன் என்று பேரிட்டாள்.

13. So she named ADONAI who had spoken with her El Ro'i [[God of seeing]], because she said, 'Have I really seen the One who sees me [[and stayed alive]]?'

14. ஆகையால், அந்தத் துரவு பெயர் லகாய்ரோயீ என்னப்பட்டது; அது காதேசுக்கும் பாரேத்துக்கும் நடுவே இருக்கிறது.

14. This is why the well has been called Be'er-Lachai-Ro'i [[well of the one who lives and sees]]; it lies between Kadesh and Bered.

15. ஆகார் ஆபிராமுக்கு ஒரு குமாரனைப் பெற்றாள்; ஆபிராம் ஆகார் பெற்ற தன் குமாரனுக்கு இஸ்மவேல் என்று பேரிட்டான்.

15. Hagar bore Avram a son, and Avram called the son whom Hagar had borne Yishma'el.

16. ஆகார் ஆபிராமுக்கு இஸ்மவேலைப் பெற்றபோது, ஆபிராம் எண்பத்தாறு வயதாயிருந்தான்.

16. Avram was 86 years old when Hagar bore Yishma'el to Avram.
