1. நீ உன் சத்துருக்களுக்கு எதிராக யுத்தஞ்செய்யப் புறப்பட்டுப்போகையில், குதிரைகளையும், இரதங்களையும், உன்னிலும் பெரிய கூட்டமாகிய ஜனங்களையும் கண்டால், அவர்களுக்குப் பயப்படாயாக; உன்னை எகிப்து தேசத்திலிருந்து புறப்படப்பண்ணின உன் தேவனாகிய கர்த்தர் உன்னோடே இருக்கிறார்.

1. 'When you go out to fight your enemies and see horses, chariots and a force larger than yours, you are not to be afraid of them; because ADONAI your God, who brought you up from the land of Egypt, is with you.

2. நீங்கள் யுத்தஞ்செய்யத் தொடங்கும்போது, ஆசாரியன் சேர்ந்து வந்து, ஜனங்களிடத்தில் பேசி:

2. When you are about to go into battle, the [cohen] is to come forward and address the people.

3. இஸ்ரவேலரே, கேளுங்கள்; இன்று உங்கள் சத்துருக்களுடன் யுத்தஞ்செய்யப் போகிறீர்கள்; உங்கள் இருதயம் துவளவேண்டாம்; நீங்கள் அவர்களைப் பார்த்துப் பயப்படவும் கலங்கவும் தத்தளிக்கவும் வேண்டாம்.

3. He should tell them, 'Listen, Isra'el! You are about to do battle against your enemies. Don't be fainthearted or afraid; don't be alarmed or frightened by them;

4. உங்களுக்காக உங்கள் சத்துருக்களோடே யுத்தம்பண்ணவும் உங்களை இரட்சிக்கவும் உங்களோடேகூடப் போகிறவர் உங்கள் தேவனாகிய கர்த்தர் என்று சொல்லவேண்டும்.

4. because ADONAI your God is going with you to fight on your behalf against your enemies and give you victory.'

5. அன்றியும் அதிபதிகள் ஜனங்களை நோக்கி: புதுவீட்டைக் கட்டி, அதைப் பிரதிஷ்டை பண்ணாதிருக்கிறவன் எவனோ, அவன் தன் வீட்டுக்குத் திரும்பிப்போகக்கடவன்; அவன் யுத்தத்திலே செத்தால் வேறொருவன் அதைப் பிரதிஷ்டைப்பண்ணவேண்டியதாகும்.

5. 'Then the officials will speak to the soldiers. They are to say, 'Is there a man here who has built a new house, but hasn't dedicated it yet? He should go back home now; otherwise he may die fighting, and another man will dedicate it.

6. திராட்சத்தோட்டத்தை நாட்டி, அதை அனுபவியாதிருக்கிறவன் எவனோ, அவன் தன் வீட்டுக்குத் திரும்பிப்போகக்கடவன்; அவன் யுத்தத்திலே செத்தால் வேறொருவன் அதை அநுபவிக்கவேண்டியதாகும்.

6. ''Is there a man here who has planted a vineyard, but hasn't yet made use of its fruit? He should go back home; otherwise he may die fighting, and another man will use it.

7. ஒரு பெண்ணைத் தனக்கு நியமித்துக்கொண்டு, அவளை விவாகம்பண்ணாதிருக்கிறவன் எவனோ, அவன் தன் வீட்டுக்குத் திரும்பிப்போகக்கடவன்; அவன் யுத்தத்திலே செத்தால் வேறொருவன் அவளை விவாகம்பண்ணவேண்டியதாகும் என்று சொல்லவேண்டும்.

7. ''Is there a man here who is engaged to a woman, but hasn't married her yet? He should go back home; otherwise he may die fighting, and another man will marry her.'

8. பின்னும் அதிபதிகள் ஜனங்களுடனே பேசி: பயங்காளியும் திடனற்றவனுமாயிருக்கிறவன் எவனோ, அவன் தன் சகோதரரின் இருதயத்தைத் தன் இருதயத்தைப்போலக் கரைந்துபோகப்பண்ணாதபடிக்கு, தன் வீட்டுக்குத் திரும்பிப் போகக்கடவன் என்று சொல்லவேண்டும்.

8. 'The officials will then add to what they have said to the soldiers: 'Is there a man here who is afraid and fainthearted? He should go back home; otherwise his fear may demoralize his comrades as well.'

9. அதிபதிகள் ஜனங்களோடே பேசி முடிந்தபின்பு, ஜனங்களை நடத்தும்படி சேனைத்தலைவரை நியமிக்கக்கடவர்கள்.

9. When the officials have finished speaking with the soldiers, commanders are to be appointed to lead the army.

10. நீ ஒரு பட்டணத்தின்மேல் யுத்தம்பண்ண நெருங்கும்போது, அந்தப் பட்டணத்தாருக்குச் சமாதானம் கூறக்கடவாய்.

10. 'When you advance on a town to attack it, first offer it terms for peace.

11. அவர்கள் உனக்குச் சமாதானமான உத்தரவு கொடுத்து, வாசலைத் திறந்தால், அதிலுள்ள ஜனங்கள் எல்லாரும் உனக்குப் பகுதிகட்டுகிறவர்களாகி, உனக்கு ஊழியஞ்செய்யக்கடவர்கள்.

11. If it accepts the terms for peace and opens its gates to you, then all the people there are to be put to forced labor and work for you.

12. அவர்கள் உன்னோடே சமாதானப்படாமல், உன்னோடே யுத்தம்பண்ணுவார்களானால், நீ அதை முற்றிக்கைபோட்டு,

12. However, if they refuse to make peace with you but prefer to make war against you, you are to put it under siege.

13. உன் தேவனாகிய கர்த்தர் அதை உன் கையில் ஒப்புக்கொடுக்கும்போது, அதிலுள்ள புருஷர்கள் எல்லாரையும் பட்டயக்கருக்கினால் வெட்டி,

13. When ADONAI your God hands it over to you, you are to put every male to the sword.

14. ஸ்திரீகளையும் குழந்தைகளையும் மிருகஜீவன்களையும் மாத்திரம் உயிரோடே வைத்து, பட்டணத்திலுள்ள எல்லாவற்றையும் கொள்ளையிட்டு, உன் தேவனாகிய கர்த்தர் உனக்கு ஒப்புக்கொடுத்த உன் சத்துருக்களின் கொள்ளைப்பொருளை அநுபவிப்பாயாக.

14. However, you are to take as booty for yourself the women, the little ones, the livestock, and everything in the city- all its spoil. Yes, you will feed on your enemies' spoil, which ADONAI your God has given you.

15. இந்த ஜாதிகளைச்சேர்ந்த பட்டணங்களாயிராமல், உனக்கு வெகுதூரத்திலிருக்கிற சகல பட்டணங்களுக்கும் இப்படியே செய்வாயாக.

15. This is what you are to do to all the towns which are at a great distance from you, which are not the towns of these nations.

16. உன் தேவனாகிய கர்த்தர் உனக்குச் சுதந்தரமாகக் கொடுக்கிற ஏத்தியர், எமோரியர், கானானியர், பெரிசியர், ஏவியர், எபூசியர் என்னும் ஜனங்களின் பட்டணங்களிலேமாத்திரம் சுவாசமுள்ளதொன்றையும் உயிரோடே வைக்காமல்,

16. 'As for the towns of these peoples, which ADONAI your God is giving you as your inheritance, you are not to allow anything that breathes to live.

17. அவர்களை உன் தேவனாகிய கர்த்தர் உனக்குக் கட்டளையிட்டபடியே சங்காரம்பண்ணக்கடவாய்.

17. Rather you must destroy them completely- the Hitti, the Emori, the Kena'ani, the P'rizi, the Hivi and the Y'vusi- as ADONAI your God has ordered you;

18. அவர்கள் தங்கள் தேவர்களுக்குச் செய்கிற தங்களுடைய சகல அருவருப்புகளின்படியே நீங்களும் செய்ய உங்களுக்குக் கற்றுக்கொடாமலும், நீங்கள் உங்கள் தேவனாகிய கர்த்தருக்கு விரோதமாய்ப் பாவஞ்செய்யாமலும் இருக்கும்படி இப்படிச் செய்யவேண்டும்.

18. so that they won't teach you to follow their abominable practices, which they do for their gods, thus causing you to sin against ADONAI your God.

19. நீ ஒரு பட்டணத்தின்மேல் யுத்தம்பண்ணி அதைப் பிடிக்க அநேகநாள் அதை முற்றிக்கைபோட்டிருக்கும்போது, நீ கோடரியை ஓங்கி, அதின் மரங்களை வெட்டிச் சேதம்பண்ணாயாக; அவைகளின் கனியை நீ புசிக்கலாமே; ஆகையால் உனக்குக் கொத்தளத்திற்கு உதவும் என்று அவைகளை வெட்டாயாக; வெளியின் விருட்சங்கள் மனுஷனுடைய ஜீவனத்துக்கானவைகள்.

19. 'When, in making war against a town in order to capture it, you lay siege to it for a long time, you are not to destroy its trees, cutting them down with an axe. You can eat their fruit, so don't cut them down. After all, are the trees in the field human beings, so that you have to besiege them too?

20. புசிக்கிறதற்கேற்ற கனிகொடாத மரம் என்று நீ அறிந்திருக்கிற மரங்களை மாத்திரம் வெட்டியழித்து, உன்னோடு யுத்தம்பண்ணுகிற பட்டணம் பிடிபடுமட்டும் அதற்கு எதிராகக் கொத்தளம் போடலாம்.

20. However, if you know that certain trees provide no food, you may destroy them and cut them down, in order to build siege-works against the town making war with you, until it falls.
