1. சண்டையோடுகூடிய வீடுநிறைந்த கொழுமையான பதார்த்தங்களைப் பார்க்கிலும், அமரிக்கையோடே சாப்பிடும் வெறும் துணிக்கையே நலம்.

1. Better [is] a dry morsel in peace than the house of contention full of sacrifices [for a feast].

2. புத்தியுள்ள வேலைக்காரன் இலச்சையுண்டாக்குகிற புத்திரனை ஆண்டு, சகோதரருக்குள்ள சுதந்தரத்தில் பங்கடைவான்.

2. A prudent servant shall have rule over a son that causes shame and shall have part of the inheritance among the brethren.

3. வெள்ளியைக் குகையும், பொன்னைப் புடமும் சோதிக்கும்; இருதயங்களைச் சோதிக்கிறவரோ கர்த்தர்.

3. The fining pot [is] for silver, and the furnace for gold, but the LORD tries the hearts.

4. துஷ்டன் அக்கிரம உதடுகள் சொல்வதை உற்றுக்கேட்கிறான்; பொய்யன் கேடுள்ள நாவுக்குச் செவிகொடுக்கிறான்.

4. An evil doer gives heed to false lips, [and] a liar gives ear to the tongue which curses.

5. ஏழையைப் பரியாசம்பண்ணுகிறவன் அவனை உண்டாக்கினவரை நிந்திக்கிறான்; ஆபத்தைக் குறித்துக் களிக்கிறவன் தண்டனைக்குத் தப்பான்.

5. Whosoever mocks the poor reproaches his Maker, [and] he that is glad regarding the calamity [of someone else] shall not go unpunished.

6. பிள்ளைகளின் பிள்ளைகள் முதியோருக்குக் கிரீடம்; பிள்ளைகளின் மேன்மை அவர்கள் பிதாக்களே.

6. Children's children [are] the crown of old men, and the honour of the children [are] their fathers.

7. மேன்மையானவைகளைப் பேசும் உதடு மூடனுக்குத் தகாது; பொய் பேசும் உதடு பிரபுவுக்கு எவ்வளவேனும் தகாது.

7. Excellent speech is not suitable for a fool: much less lying lips for a prince!

8. பரிதானம் வாங்குகிறவர்களின் பார்வைக்கு அது இரத்தினம் போலிருக்கும்; அது நோக்கும் திசையெல்லாம் காரியம் வாய்க்கும்.

8. A bribe [is as] a precious stone in the eyes of him that has it; wherever it turns, it prospers.

9. குற்றத்தை மூடுகிறவன் சிநேகத்தை நாடுகிறான்; கேட்டதைச் சொல்லுகிறவன் பிராணசிநேகிதரையும் பிரித்துவிடுகிறான்.

9. He that covers a transgression seeks love, but he that repeats a matter separates [very] friends.

10. மூடனை நூறடி அடிப்பதைப்பார்க்கிலும், புத்திமானை வாயினால் கண்டிப்பதே அதிகமாய் உறைக்கும்.

10. Reproof is of more benefit to a wise man than a hundred stripes to a fool.

11. துஷ்டன் கலகத்தையே தேடுகிறான்; குரூரதூதன் அவனுக்கு விரோதமாக அனுப்பப்படுவான்.

11. The rebellious [man] seeks only evil; therefore a cruel messenger shall be sent against him.

12. தன் மதிகேட்டில் திரியும் மதியீனனுக்கு எதிர்ப்படுவதைப்பார்க்கிலும், குட்டிகளைப் பறிகொடுத்த கரடிக்கு எதிர்ப்படுவது வாசி.

12. It is better to meet a bear robbed of her cubs than a fool in his folly.

13. நன்மைக்குத் தீமைசெய்கிறவன் எவனோ, அவன் வீட்டைவிட்டுத் தீமை நீங்காது.

13. Whosoever rewards evil for good, evil shall not depart from his house.

14. சண்டையின் ஆரம்பம் மதகைத் திறந்துவிடுகிறதுபோலிருக்கும்; ஆதலால் விவாதம் எழும்புமுன் அதை விட்டுவிடு.

14. To release the [waters (to speak rashly)] is the beginning of contention; therefore, leave off strife before it gets started.

15. துன்மார்க்கனை நீதிமானாக்குகிறவனும், நீதிமானைக் குற்றவாளியாக்குகிறவனுமாகிய இவ்விருவரும் கர்த்தருக்கு அருவருப்பானவர்கள்.

15. He that justifies the wicked and he that condemns the just, even they both [are] abomination to the LORD.

16. ஞானத்தைக் கொள்ளும்படி மூடன் கையிலே ரொக்கம் என்னத்திற்கு? அதின்மேல் அவனுக்கு மனமில்லையே.

16. Of what good is the price to buy wisdom in the hand of the fool, seeing [he has] no heart [to understand]?

17. சிநேகிதன் எல்லாக் காலத்திலும் சிநேகிப்பான்; இடுக்கணில் உதவவே சகோதரன் பிறந்திருக்கிறான்.

17. A friend loves at all times, and a brother is born for adversity.

18. புத்தியீனன் தன் சிநேகிதனுக்கு முன்பாகக் கையடித்துக்கொடுத்துப் பிணைப்படுகிறான்.

18. A man void of understanding strikes hands [and] becomes surety in the presence of his friend.

19. வாதுப்பிரியன் பாதகப்பிரியன்; தன் வாசலை உயர்த்திக் கட்டுகிறவன் அழிவை நாடுகிறான்.

19. Transgression loves him that loves strife, [and] he that exaltes his gate seeks destruction.

20. மாறுபாடான இருதயமுள்ளவன் நன்மையைக் கண்டடைவதில்லை; புரட்டு நாவுள்ளவன் தீமையில் விழுவான்.

20. He that has a perverse heart shall never find good, and he that stirs up [trouble] with his tongue shall fall into evil.

21. மூடபுத்திரனைப் பெறுகிறவன் தனக்குச் சஞ்சலமுண்டாக அவனைப் பெறுகிறான்; மதியீனனுடைய தகப்பனுக்கு மகிழ்ச்சியில்லை.

21. He that begets a fool [does it] to his sorrow, and the father of a fool shall have no joy.

22. மனமகிழ்ச்சி நல்ல ஒளஷதம்; முறிந்த ஆவியோ எலும்புகளை உலரப்பண்ணும்.

22. A joyful heart shall do good [like] a medicine, but a broken spirit dries the bones.

23. துன்மார்க்கன், நீதியின் வழியைப்புரட்ட. மடியிலுள்ள பரிதானத்தை வாங்குகிறான்.

23. A wicked [man] takes a gift in secret to pervert the paths of judgment.

24. ஞானம் புத்திமானுக்கு முன்பாக இருக்கும்; மூடனுடைய கண்களோ பூமியின் கடையாந்தரங்களில் செல்லும்.

24. Wisdom [appears] upon the countenance of him that has understanding, but the eyes of a fool [manifest his folly] unto the ends of the earth.

25. மூடபுத்திரன் தன் பிதாவுக்குச் சலிப்பும், தன்னைப் பெற்றவர்களுக்குக் கசப்புமானவன்.

25. The foolish son [is] a grief to his father and bitterness to her that bore him.

26. நீதிமானை தண்டம் பிடிக்கிறதும், நியாயஞ்செய்கிறவனைப் பிரபுக்கள் அடிக்கிறதும் தகுதியல்ல.

26. It is certainly not good to condemn the just, nor to smite princes for doing that which is upright.

27. அறிவாளி தன் வார்த்தைகளை அடக்குகிறான்; விவேகி குளிர்ந்த மனமுள்ளவன்.

27. He who has knowledge spares his words, and a man of understanding is of an excellent spirit.

28. பேசாதிருந்தால் மூடனும் ஞானவான் என்று எண்ணப்படுவான்; தன் உதடுகளை மூடுகிறவன் புத்திமான் என்று எண்ணப்படுவான்.

28. Even a fool, when he is silent is counted wise, and he that shuts his lips is esteemed a man of understanding.:
