1. ஞானமுள்ள மகன் தகப்பனுடைய போதகத்தைக் கேட்கிறான்; பரியாசக்காரனோ கடிந்துகொள்ளுதலுக்குச் செவிகொடான்.

1. A wise son hears his father's instruction, but a scorner does not heed rebuke.

2. மனுஷன் தன் வாயின் பலனால் நன்மையைப் புசிப்பான்; துரோகிகளின் ஆத்துமாவோ கொடுமையைப் புசிக்கும்.

2. By the fruit of his mouth a man shall eat well, but the soul of the treacherous feeds on violence.

3. தன் வாயைக் காக்கிறவன் தன் பிராணனைக் காக்கிறான்; தன் உதடுகளை விரிவாய்த் திறக்கிறவனோ கலக்கமடைவான்.

3. He who watches his mouth keeps his life; he who opens his lips wide shall have destruction.

4. சோம்பேறியுடைய ஆத்துமா விரும்பியும் ஒன்றும் பெறாது; ஜாக்கிரதையுள்ளவர்களுடைய ஆத்துமாவோ புஷ்டியாகும்;

4. The soul of the sluggard desires and has nothing, but the soul of the diligent shall be made fat.

5. நீதிமான் பொய்ப்பேச்சை வெறுக்கிறான்; துன்மார்க்கனோ வெட்கமும் இலச்சையும் உண்டாக்குகிறான்.

5. The righteous hates lying, but the wicked one is odious and acts shamefully.

6. நீதி உத்தமமார்க்கத்தானைத் தற்காக்கும்; துன்மார்க்கமோ பாவியைக் கவிழ்த்துப்போடும்.

6. Righteousness guards the one whose way is perfect, but wickedness subverts the sinner.

7. ஒன்றுமில்லாதிருக்கத் தன்னைச் செல்வனாகப் பாராட்டுகிறவனும் உண்டு; மிகுந்த செல்வமிருக்கத் தன்னைத் தரித்திரனாகப் பாராட்டுகிறவனும் உண்டு.

7. There are those who pretend to be rich, yet have nothing; and those who act poor, yet have great riches.

8. மனுஷனுடைய ஐசுவரியம் அவன் பிராணனை மீட்கும்; தரித்திரனோ மிரட்டுதலைக் கேளாதிருக்கிறான்.

8. The ransom of a man's life is his riches, but the poor does not hear rebuke.

9. நீதிமான்களின் வெளிச்சம் சந்தோஷிப்பிக்கும்; துன்மார்க்கரின் தீபமோ அணைந்துபோகும்.

9. The light of the righteous rejoices, but the lamp of the wicked shall be put out.

10. அகந்தையினால் மாத்திரம் வாது பிறக்கும்; ஆலோசனையைக் கேட்கிறவர்களிடத்திலோ ஞானம் உண்டு.

10. By pride comes nothing but strife, but with those who deliberate is wisdom.

11. வஞ்சனையால் தேடின பொருள் குறைந்துபோகும்; கைப்பாடாய்ச் சேர்க்கிறவனோ விருத்தியடைவான்.

11. Wealth gotten by vanity shall be diminished, but he who gathers with the labor of his hands shall increase.

12. நெடுங்காலமாய்க் காத்திருக்குதல் இருதயத்தை இளைக்கப்பண்ணும்; விரும்பினது வரும்போதோ ஜீவவிருட்சம்போல் இருக்கும்.

12. Hope postponed makes the heart sick, but when desire comes to pass it is a tree of life.

13. திருவசனத்தை அவமதிக்கிறவன் நாசமடைவான்; கற்பனைக்குப் பயப்படுகிறவனோ பலனடைவான்.

13. Whoever despises the Word shall be destroyed, but he who fears the commandment shall be rewarded.

14. ஞானவான்களுடைய போதகம் ஜீவஊற்று; அதினால் மரணக்கண்ணிகளுக்குத் தப்பலாம்.

14. The law of the wise is a fountain of life, to turn away from the snares of death.

15. நற்புத்தி தயையை உண்டாக்கும்; துரோகிகளுடைய வழியோ கரடுமுரடானது.

15. Good understanding gives favor, but the way of traitors is ever flowing.

16. விவேகியானவன் அறிவோடு நடந்துகொள்ளுகிறான்; மூடனோ தன் மூடத்தனத்தை வெளிப்படுத்துகிறான்.

16. Every prudent one acts with knowledge, but a fool lays open his folly.

17. துரோகமுள்ள தூதன் தீதிலே விழுவான்; உண்மையுள்ள ஸ்தானாபதியோ ஒளஷதம்.

17. A wicked messenger falls into evil, but a faithful ambassador is health.

18. புத்திமதிகளைத் தள்ளுகிறவன் தரித்திரத்தையும் இலச்சையையும் அடைவான்; கடிந்து கொள்ளுதலைக் கவனித்து நடக்கிறவனோ கனமடைவான்.

18. Poverty and shame shall be to him who ignores correction, but he who heeds reproof shall be honored.

19. வாஞ்சை நிறைவேறுவது ஆத்துமாவுக்கு இனிது; தீமையை விட்டு விலகுவது மூடருக்கு அருவருப்பு.

19. The desire accomplished is sweet to the soul, but it is an abomination to fools to turn from evil.

20. ஞானிகளோடே சஞ்சரிக்கிறவன் ஞானமடைவான்; மூடருக்குத் தோழனோ நாசமடைவான்.

20. He who walks with the wise will be wise, but a companion of fools shall be destroyed.

21. பாவிகளைத் தீவினை தொடரும்; நீதிமான்களுக்கோ நன்மை பலனாக வரும்.

21. Evil pursues sinners, but to the righteous, good shall be repaid.

22. நல்லவன் தன் பிள்ளைகளின் பிள்ளைகளுக்குச் சுதந்தரம் வைத்துப்போகிறான்; பாவியின் ஆஸ்தியோ நீதிமானுக்காகச் சேர்த்துவைக்கப்படும்.

22. A good man leaves an inheritance to his children's children, but the wealth of the sinner is treasured up for the just.

23. ஏழைகளின் வயல் மிகுதியான ஆகாரத்தை விளைவிக்கும்; நியாயம் கிடையாமல் கெட்டுப்போகிறவர்களும் உண்டு.

23. There is much food in the cultivated land of the poor, but when there is no justice, it is snatched away.

24. பிரம்பைக் கையாடாதவன் தன் மகனைப் பகைக்கிறான்; அவன்மேல் அன்பாயிருக்கிறவனோ அவனை ஏற்கனவே தண்டிக்கிறான்.

24. He who withholds the rod hates his son, but he who loves him chastens him promptly.

25. நீதிமான் தனக்குத் திருப்தியாகப் புசிக்கிறான்; துன்மார்க்கருடைய வயிறோ பசித்திருக்கும்.

25. The righteous eats to the satisfying of his soul, but the belly of the wicked shall lack.
