1. The People of Israel marched on and camped on the Plains of Moab at Jordan-Jericho.

2. Balak son of Zippor learned of all that Israel had done to the Amorites.

3. The people of Moab were in a total panic because of Israel. There were so many of them! They were terrorized.

4. Moab spoke to the leaders of Midian: 'Look, this mob is going to clean us out--a bunch of crows picking a carcass clean.' Balak son of Zippor, who was king of Moab at that time,

5. sent emissaries to get Balaam son of Beor, who lived at Pethor on the banks of the Euphrates River, his homeland. Balak's emissaries said, 'Look. A people has come up out of Egypt, and they're all over the place! And they're pressing hard on me.

6. Come and curse them for me--they're too much for me. Maybe then I can beat them; we'll attack and drive them out of the country. You have a reputation: Those you bless stay blessed; those you curse stay cursed.'

7. அப்படியே மோவாபின் மூப்பரும் மீதியானின் மூப்பரும் குறிசொல்லுதலுக்குரிய கூலியைத் தங்கள் கையில் எடுத்துக்கொண்டு புறப்பட்டு, பிலேயாமிடத்தில் போய், பாலாகின் வார்த்தைகளை அவனுக்குச் சொன்னார்கள்.

7. The leaders of Moab and Midian were soon on their way, with the fee for the cursing tucked safely in their wallets. When they got to Balaam, they gave him Balak's message.

8. 'Stay here for the night,' Balaam said. 'In the morning I'll deliver the answer that GOD gives me.' The Moabite nobles stayed with him.

9. Then God came to Balaam. He asked, 'So who are these men here with you?'

10. Balaam answered, 'Balak son of Zippor, king of Moab, sent them with a message:

11. பூமியின் விசாலத்தை மூடுகிற ஒரு ஜனக்கூட்டம் எகிப்திலிருந்து வந்திருக்கிறது; ஆகையால், நீ வந்து எனக்காக அவர்களைச் சபிக்கவேண்டும்; அப்பொழுது நான் அவர்களோடே யுத்தம்பண்ணி, ஒருவேளை அவர்களைத் துரத்திவிடலாம் என்று சொல்லச்சொன்னான் என்றான்.

11. 'Look, the people that came up out of Egypt are all over the place! Come and curse them for me. Maybe then I'll be able to attack and drive them out of the country.''

12. அதற்குத் தேவன் பிலேயாமை நோக்கி: நீ அவர்களோடே போகவேண்டாம்; அந்த ஜனங்களைச் சபிக்கவும் வேண்டாம்; அவர்கள் ஆசீர்வதிக்கப்பட்டவர்கள் என்றார்.

12. God said to Balaam, 'Don't go with them. And don't curse the others--they are a blessed people.'

13. பிலேயாம் காலமே எழுந்து, பாலாகின் பிரபுக்களை நோக்கி: நீங்கள் உங்கள் தேசத்துக்குப் போய்விடுங்கள்; நான் உங்களோடேகூட வருகிறதற்குக் கர்த்தர் எனக்கு உத்தரவு கொடுக்கமாட்டோம் என்கிறார் என்று சொன்னான்.

13. The next morning Balaam got up and told Balak's nobles, 'Go back home; GOD refuses to give me permission to go with you.'

14. அப்படியே மோவாபியருடைய பிரபுக்கள் எழுந்து, பாலாகினிடத்தில் போய்: பிலேயாம் எங்களோடே வரமாட்டேன் என்று சொன்னான் என்றார்கள்.

14. So the Moabite nobles left, came back to Balak, and said, 'Balaam wouldn't come with us.'

15. பாலாக் மறுபடியும் அவர்களிலும் கனவான்களான அதிக பிரபுக்களை அனுப்பினான்.

15. Balak sent another group of nobles, higher ranking and more distinguished.

16. அவர்கள் பிலேயாமிடத்தில் போய், அவனை நோக்கி: சிப்போரின் குமாரனாகிய பாலாக் எங்களை அனுப்பி: நீர் என்னிடத்தில் வருவதற்குத் தடைபடவேண்டாம்;

16. They came to Balaam and said, 'Balak son of Zippor says, 'Please, don't refuse to come to me.

17. உம்மை மிகவும் கனம்பண்ணுவேன்; நீர் சொல்வதையெல்லாம் செய்வேன்; நீர் வந்து எனக்காக அந்த ஜனங்களைச் சபிக்கவேண்டும் என்று சொல்லச்சொன்னார் என்றார்கள்.

17. I will honor and reward you lavishly--anything you tell me to do, I'll do; I'll pay anything--only come and curse this people.''

18. பிலேயாம் பாலாகின் ஊழியக்காரருக்குப் பிரதியுத்தரமாக: பாலாக் எனக்குத் தன் வீடு நிறைய வெள்ளியும் பொன்னும் தந்தாலும், சிறிய காரியமானாலும் பெரிய காரியமானாலும் செய்யும் பொருட்டு, என் தேவனாகிய கர்த்தரின் கட்டளையை நான் மீறக்கூடாது.

18. Balaam answered Balak's servants: 'Even if Balak gave me his house stuffed with silver and gold, I wouldn't be able to defy the orders of my GOD to do anything, whether big or little.

19. ஆகிலும், கர்த்தர் இனிமேல் எனக்கு என்ன சொல்லுவார் என்பதை நான் அறியும்படிக்கு, நீங்களும் இந்த இராத்திரி இங்கே தங்கியிருங்கள் என்றான்.

19. But come along and stay with me tonight as the others did; I'll see what GOD will say to me this time.'

20. God came to Balaam that night and said, 'Since these men have come all this way to see you, go ahead and go with them. But make sure you do absolutely nothing other than what I tell you.'

21. பிலேயாம் காலமே எழுந்து, தன் கழுதையின்மேல் சேணங்கட்டி மோவாபின் பிரபுக்களோடே கூடப் போனான்.

21. Balaam got up in the morning, saddled his donkey, and went off with the noblemen from Moab.

22. அவன் போகிறதினாலே தேவனுக்குக் கோபம் மூண்டது; கர்த்தருடைய தூதனானவர் வழியிலே அவனுக்கு எதிராளியாக நின்றார். அவன் தன் கழுதையின்மேல் ஏறிப்போனான்; அவன் வேலைக்காரர் இரண்டுபேரும் அவனோடே இருந்தார்கள்.

22. As he was going, though, God's anger flared. The angel of GOD stood in the road to block his way. Balaam was riding his donkey, accompanied by his two servants.

23. கர்த்தருடைய தூதனானவர் உருவின பட்டயத்தைத் தம்முடைய கையிலே பிடித்துக்கொண்டு வழியிலே நிற்கிறதைக் கழுதை கண்டு, வழியை விட்டு வயலிலே விலகிப்போயிற்று; கழுதையை வழியில் திருப்ப பிலேயாம் அதை அடித்தான்.

23. When the donkey saw the angel blocking the road and brandishing a sword, she veered off the road into the ditch. Balaam beat the donkey and got her back on the road.

24. கர்த்தருடைய தூதனானவர் இருபுறத்திலும் சுவர் வைத்திருந்த திராட்சத் தோட்டங்களின் பாதையிலே போய் நின்றார்.

24. But as they were going through a vineyard, with a fence on either side,

25. கழுதை கர்த்தருடைய தூதனைக்கண்டு, சுவர் ஒரமாய் ஒதுங்கி, பிலேயாமின் காலைச் சுவரோடே நெருக்கிற்று; திரும்பவும் அதை அடித்தான்.

25. the donkey again saw GOD's angel blocking the way and veered into the fence, crushing Balaam's foot against the fence. Balaam hit her again.

26. அப்பொழுது கர்த்தருடைய தூதன் அப்புறம் போய், வலதுபுறம் இடதுபுறம் விலக வழியில்லாத இடுக்கமான இடத்திலே நின்றார்.

26. GOD's angel blocked the way yet again--a very narrow passage this time; there was no getting through on the right or left.

27. கழுதை கர்த்தருடைய தூதனைக்கண்டு, பிலேயாமின் கீழ்ப் படுத்துக்கொண்டது; பிலேயாம் கோபம் மூண்டவனாகி, கழுதையைத் தடியினால் அடித்தான்.

27. Seeing the angel, Balaam's donkey sat down under him. Balaam lost his temper; he beat the donkey with his stick.

28. உடனே கர்த்தர் கழுதையின் வாயைத் திறந்தார்; அது பிலேயாமைப் பார்த்து: நீர் என்னை இப்பொழுது மூன்று தரம் அடிக்கும்படி நான் உமக்கு என்ன செய்தேன் என்றது.

28. Then GOD gave speech to the donkey. She said to Balaam: 'What have I ever done to you that you have beat me these three times?'

29. அப்பொழுது பிலேயாம் கழுதையைப் பார்த்து: நீ என்னைப் பரியாசம் பண்ணிக்கொண்டு வருகிறாய்; என் கையில் ஒரு பட்டயம்மாத்திரம் இருந்தால், இப்பொழுதே உன்னைக் கொன்றுபோடுவேன் என்றான்.

29. Balaam said, 'Because you've been playing games with me! If I had a sword I would have killed you by now.'

30. கழுதை பிலேயாமை நோக்கி: நீர் என்னைக் கைக்கொண்ட காலமுதல் இந்நாள்வரைக்கும் நீர் ஏறின கழுதை நான் அல்லவா? இப்படி உமக்கு எப்போதாகிலும் நான் செய்தது உண்டா என்றது. அதற்கு அவன்: இல்லை என்றான்.

30. The donkey said to Balaam, 'Am I not your trusty donkey on whom you've ridden for years right up until now? Have I ever done anything like this to you before? Have I?' He said, 'No.'

31. அப்பொழுது கர்த்தர் பிலேயாமின் கண்களைத் திறந்தார்; வழியிலே நின்று உருவின பட்டயத்தைத் தம்முடைய கையிலே பிடித்திருக்கிற கர்த்தருடைய தூதனை அவன் கண்டு, தலைகுனிந்து முகங்குப்புற விழுந்து பணிந்தான்.

31. Then GOD helped Balaam see what was going on: He saw GOD's angel blocking the way, brandishing a sword. Balaam fell to the ground, his face in the dirt.

32. கர்த்தருடைய தூதனானவர் அவனை நோக்கி: நீ உன் கழுதையை இதனோடே மூன்றுதரம் அடித்ததென்ன? உன் வழி எனக்கு மாறுபாடாயிருக்கிறதினால், நான் உனக்கு எதிரியாகப் புறப்பட்டு வந்தேன்.

32. GOD's angel said to him: 'Why have you beaten your poor donkey these three times? I have come here to block your way because you're getting way ahead of yourself.

33. கழுதை என்னைக் கண்டு, இந்த மூன்றுதரம் எனக்கு விலகிற்று; எனக்கு விலகாமல் இருந்ததானால், இப்பொழுது நான் உன்னைக் கொன்றுபோட்டு, கழுதையை உயிரோடே வைப்பேன் என்றார்.

33. The donkey saw me and turned away from me these three times. If she hadn't, I would have killed you by this time, but not the donkey. I would have let her off.'

34. அப்பொழுது பிலேயாம் கர்த்தருடைய தூதனை நோக்கி: நான் பாவஞ்செய்தேன்; வழியிலே நீர் எனக்கு எதிராக நிற்கிறதை அறியாதிருந்தேன்; இப்பொழுதும் உமது பார்வைக்கு இது தகாததாயிருக்குமானால், நான் திரும்பிப்போய்விடுகிறேன் என்றான்.

34. Balaam said to GOD's angel, 'I have sinned. I had no idea you were standing in the road blocking my way. If you don't like what I'm doing, I'll head back.'

35. கர்த்தருடைய தூதனானவர் பிலேயாமை நோக்கி: அந்த மனிதரோடேகூடப்போ; நான் உன்னோடே சொல்லும் வார்த்தையை மாத்திரம் நீ சொல்லக்கடவாய் என்றார்; அப்படியே பிலேயாம் பாலாகின் பிரபுக்களோடே கூடப்போனான்.

35. But GOD's angel said to Balaam, 'Go ahead and go with them. But only say what I tell you to say--absolutely no other word.' And so Balaam continued to go with Balak's nobles.

36. பிலேயாம் வருகிறதைப் பாலாக்கேட்டமாத்திரத்தில், கடைசி எல்லையான அர்னோன் நதியின் ஓரத்திலுள்ள மோவாபின் பட்டணமட்டும் அவனுக்கு எதிர்கொண்டு போனான்.

36. When Balak heard that Balaam was coming, he went out to meet him in the Moabite town that was on the banks of the Arnon, right on the boundary of his land.

37. பாலாக் பிலேயாமை நோக்கி: உம்மை அழைக்கும்படி நான் ஆவலோடே உம்மிடத்தில் ஆள் அனுப்பவில்லையா? என்னிடத்திற்கு வராமல் இருந்ததென்ன? ஏற்றபிரகாரமாக உம்மை நான் கனம் பண்ணமாட்டேனா என்றான்.

37. Balak said to Balaam, 'Didn't I send an urgent message for help? Why didn't you come when I called? Do you think I can't pay you enough?'

38. அப்பொழுது பிலேயாம் பாலாகை நோக்கி: இதோ, உம்மிடத்திற்கு வந்தேன்; ஆனாலும், ஏதாகிலும் சொல்லுகிறதற்கு என்னாலே ஆகுமோ? தேவன் என் வாயிலே அளிக்கும் வார்த்தையையே சொல்லுவேன் என்றான்.

38. Balaam said to Balak, 'Well, I'm here now. But I can't tell you just anything. I can speak only words that God gives me--no others.'

39. பிலேயாம் பாலாகுடனே கூடப்போனான்; அவர்கள் கீரியாத் ஊசோத்தில் சேர்ந்தார்கள்.

39. Balaam then accompanied Balak to Kiriath Huzoth (Street-Town).

40. அங்கே பாலாக் ஆடுமாடுகளை அடித்து, பிலேயாமுக்கும் அவனோடிருந்த பிரபுக்களுக்கும் அனுப்பினான்.

40. Balak slaughtered cattle and sheep for sacrifices and presented them to Balaam and the nobles who were with him.

41. மறுநாள் காலமே பாலாக் பிலேயாமைக் கூட்டிக்கொண்டு, அவனைப் பாகாலுடைய மேடுகளில் ஏறப்பண்ணினான்; அவ்விடத்திலிருந்து பிலேயாம் ஜனத்தின் கடைசிப் பாளயத்தைப் பார்த்தான்.

41. At daybreak Balak took Balaam up to Bamoth Baal (The Heights of Baal) so that he could get a good view of some of the people.
