1. நீ ஒரு அதிபதியோடே போஜனம்பண்ண உட்கார்ந்தால், உனக்கு முன்பாக இருக்கிறதை நன்றாய்க் கவனித்துப்பார்.

1. If you take your seat at a great man's table, take careful note of what you have before you;

2. நீ போஜனப்பிரியனாயிருந்தால், உன் தொண்டையிலே கத்தியை வை.

2. if you have a big appetite put a knife to your throat.

3. அவனுடைய ருசியுள்ள பதார்த்தங்களை இச்சியாதே; அவைகள் கள்ளப்போஜனமாமே.

3. Do not hanker for his delicacies, for they are deceptive food.

4. ஐசுவரியவானாகவேண்டுமென்று பிரயாசப்படாதே; சுயபுத்தியைச் சாராதே.

4. Do not wear yourself out in quest of wealth, stop applying your mind to this.

5. இல்லாமற்போகும் பொருள்மேல் உன் கண்களைப் பறக்கவிடுவானேன்? அது கழுகைப்போல சிறகுகளைத் தனக்கு உண்டுபண்ணிக்கொண்டு, ஆகாயமார்க்கமாய்ப் பறந்துபோகும்.

5. Fix your gaze on it, and it is there no longer, for it is able to sprout wings like an eagle that flies off to the sky.

6. வன்கண்ணனுடைய ஆகாரத்தைப் புசியாதே; அவனுடைய ருசியுள்ள பதார்த்தங்களை இச்சியாதே.

6. Do not eat the food of anyone whose eye is jealous, do not hanker for his delicacies.

7. அவன் இருதயத்தின் நினைவு எப்படியோ, அப்படியே அவன் இருக்கிறான்; புசியும், பானம்பண்ணும் என்று அவன் உன்னோடே சொன்னாலும், அவன் இருதயம் உன்னோடே இராது.

7. For what he is really thinking about is himself: 'Eat and drink,' he tells you, but his heart is not with you.

8. நீ புசித்த துணிக்கையை வாந்திபண்ணி, உன் இனிய சொற்களை இழந்துபோவாய்.

8. You will spit out whatever you have eaten and find your compliments wasted.

9. மூடனுடைய செவிகள் கேட்கப்பேசாதே; அவன் உன் வார்த்தைகளின் ஞானத்தை அசட்டை பண்ணுவான்.

9. Do not waste words on a fool, who will not appreciate the shrewdness of your remarks.

10. பூர்வ எல்லைக்குறியை மாற்றாதே; திக்கற்ற பிள்ளைகளுடைய நிலங்களை அபகரித்துக்கொள்ளாதே.

10. Do not displace the ancient boundary-stone, or encroach on orphans' lands,

11. அவர்களுடைய மீட்பர் வல்லவர்; அவர் உன்னுடனே அவர்களுக்காக வழக்காடுவார்.

11. for they have a powerful avenger, and he will take up their cause against you.

12. உன் இருதயத்தைப் புத்திமதிக்கும், உன் செவிகளை அறிவின் வார்த்தைகளுக்கும் சாய்ப்பாயாக.

12. Apply your heart to discipline, and your ears to instructive sayings.

13. பிள்ளையை தண்டியாமல் விடாதே; அவனைப் பிரம்பினால் அடித்தால் அவன் சாகான்.

13. Do not be chary of correcting a child, a stroke of the cane is not likely to be fatal.

14. நீ பிரம்பினால் அவனை அடிக்கிறதினால் பாதாளத்துக்கு அவன் ஆத்துமாவைத் தப்புவிப்பாயே.

14. Give him a stroke of the cane, you will save his soul from Sheol.

15. என் மகனே, உன் இருதயம் ஞானமுள்ளதாயிருந்தால், என்னிலே என் இருதயம் மகிழும்.

15. My child, if your heart is wise, then my own heart is glad,

16. உன் உதடுகள் செம்மையானவைகளைப் பேசினால், என் உள்ளிந்திரியங்கள் மகிழும்.

16. and my inmost self rejoices when from your lips come honest words.

17. உன் மனதைப் பாவிகள்மேல் பொறாமை கொள்ள விடாதே; நீ நாடோறும் கர்த்தரைப் பற்றும் பயத்தோடிரு.

17. Do not let your heart be envious of sinners but remain steady every day in the fear of Yahweh;

18. நிச்சயமாகவே முடிவு உண்டு; உன் நம்பிக்கை வீண்போகாது.

18. for there is a future, and your hope will not come to nothing.

19. என் மகனே, நீ செவிகொடுத்து ஞானமடைந்து, உன் இருதயத்தை நல்வழியிலே நடத்து.

19. Listen, my child, and be wise, and guide your heart in the way.

20. மதுபானப்பிரியரையும் மாம்சப்பெருந்தீனிக்காரரையும் சேராதே.

20. Do not be one of those forever tippling wine nor one of those who gorge themselves with meat;

21. குடியனும் போஜனப்பிரியனும் தரித்திரராவார்கள்; தூக்கம் கந்தைகளை உடுத்துவிக்கும்.

21. for the drunkard and glutton impoverish themselves, and sleepiness is clothed in rags.

22. உன்னைப் பெற்ற தகப்பனுக்குச் செவிகொடு; உன் தாய் வயதுசென்றவளாகும்போது அவளை அசட்டைபண்ணாதே.

22. Listen to your father from whom you are sprung, do not despise your mother in her old age.

23. சத்தியத்தை வாங்கு, அதை விற்காதே; அப்படியே ஞானத்தையும் உபதேசத்தையும் புத்தியையும் வாங்கு.

23. Purchase truth -- never sell it-wisdom, discipline, and discernment.

24. நீதிமானுடைய தகப்பன் மிகவும் களிகூருவான்; ஞானமுள்ள பிள்ளையைப் பெற்றவன் அவனால் மகிழுவான்.

24. The father of the upright will rejoice indeed, he who fathers a wise child will have joy of it.

25. உன் தகப்பனும் உன் தாயும் சந்தோஷப்படுவார்கள்; உன்னைப் பெற்றவள் மகிழுவாள்.

25. Your father and mother will be happy, and she who bore you joyful.

26. என் மகனே, உன் இருதயத்தை எனக்குத் தா; உன் கண்கள் என் வழிகளை நோக்குவதாக.

26. My child, pay attention to me, let your eyes take pleasure in my way:

27. வேசி ஆழமான படுகுழி; பரஸ்திரீ இடுக்கமான கிணறு.

27. a prostitute is a deep pit, a narrow well, the woman who belongs to another.

28. அவள் கொள்ளைக்காரனைப்போல் பதிவிருந்து, மனுஷருக்குள்ளே பாதகரைப் பெருகப்பண்ணுகிறாள்.

28. Yes, like a brigand, she lies in wait, increasing the number of law-breakers.

29. ஐயோ! யாருக்கு வேதனை? யாருக்குத் துக்கம்? யாருக்குச் சண்டைகள்? யாருக்குப் புலம்பல்? யாருக்குக் காரணமில்லாத காயங்கள்? யாருக்கு இரத்தங்கலங்கின கண்கள்?

29. For whom is pity, for whom contempt, for whom is strife, for whom complaint, for whom blows struck at random, for whom the clouded eye?

30. மதுபானம் இருக்கும் இடத்திலே தங்கித் தரிப்பவர்களுக்கும், கலப்புள்ள சாராயத்தை நாடுகிறவர்களுக்குந்தானே.

30. For those who linger over wine too long, ever on the look-out for the blended liquors.

31. மதுபானம் இரத்தவருணமாயிருந்து, பாத்திரத்தில் பளபளப்பாய்த் தோன்றும்போது, நீ அதைப் பாராதே; அது மெதுவாய் இறங்கும்.

31. Do not gaze at wine, how red it is, how it sparkles in the cup! How smoothly it slips down the throat!

32. முடிவிலே அது பாம்பைப்போல் கடிக்கும், விரியனைப்போல் தீண்டும்.

32. In the end its bite is like a serpent's, its sting as sharp as an adder's.

33. உன் கண்கள் பரஸ்திரீகளை நோக்கும்; உன் உள்ளம் தாறுமாறானவைகளைப் பேசும்.

33. Your eyes will see peculiar things, you will talk nonsense from your heart.

34. நீ நடுக்கடலிலே சயனித்திருக்கிறவனைப்போலும், பாய்மரத்தட்டிலே படுத்திருக்கிறவனைப்போலும் இருப்பாய்.

34. You will be like someone sleeping in mid-ocean, like one asleep at the mast-head.

35. என்னை அடித்தார்கள், எனக்கு நோகவில்லை; என்னை அறைந்தார்கள், எனக்குச் சுரணையில்லை; நான் அதைப் பின்னும் தொடர்ந்து தேட எப்பொழுது விழிப்பேன் என்பாய்.

35. 'Struck me, have they? But I'm not hurt. Beaten me? I don't feel anything. When shall I wake up? . . I'll ask for more of it!'
