1. When you sit and eat with an important person, remember who you are with.

4. Don't ruin your health trying to get rich. If you are smart, you will give it up.

5. இல்லாமற்போகும் பொருள்மேல் உன் கண்களைப் பறக்கவிடுவானேன்? அது கழுகைப்போல சிறகுகளைத் தனக்கு உண்டுபண்ணிக்கொண்டு, ஆகாயமார்க்கமாய்ப் பறந்துபோகும்.

5. In the blink of an eye, money can disappear, as if it grew wings and flew away like a bird. � 8 �

6. வன்கண்ணனுடைய ஆகாரத்தைப் புசியாதே; அவனுடைய ருசியுள்ள பதார்த்தங்களை இச்சியாதே.

6. Don't eat with selfish people. Control any desire you have for their finest foods.

7. அவன் இருதயத்தின் நினைவு எப்படியோ, அப்படியே அவன் இருக்கிறான்; புசியும், பானம்பண்ணும் என்று அவன் உன்னோடே சொன்னாலும், அவன் இருதயம் உன்னோடே இராது.

7. They might tell you to eat and drink all you want, but they don't really mean it. They are the kind of people who are only thinking about the cost.

8. நீ புசித்த துணிக்கையை வாந்திபண்ணி, உன் இனிய சொற்களை இழந்துபோவாய்.

8. And if you eat their food, you will get sick and be embarrassed. � 9 �

9. Don't try to teach fools. They will make fun of your wise words. � 10 �

10. பூர்வ எல்லைக்குறியை மாற்றாதே; திக்கற்ற பிள்ளைகளுடைய நிலங்களை அபகரித்துக்கொள்ளாதே.

10. Never move an old property line, and don't take land that belongs to orphans.

11. அவர்களுடைய மீட்பர் வல்லவர்; அவர் உன்னுடனே அவர்களுக்காக வழக்காடுவார்.

11. The Lord will be against you. He is powerful and protects orphans. � 11 �

12. உன் இருதயத்தைப் புத்திமதிக்கும், உன் செவிகளை அறிவின் வார்த்தைகளுக்கும் சாய்ப்பாயாக.

12. Listen to your teacher and learn all you can. � 12 �

13. பிள்ளையை தண்டியாமல் விடாதே; அவனைப் பிரம்பினால் அடித்தால் அவன் சாகான்.

13. Always correct children when they need it. If you spank them, it will not kill them.

17. உன் மனதைப் பாவிகள்மேல் பொறாமை கொள்ள விடாதே; நீ நாடோறும் கர்த்தரைப் பற்றும் பயத்தோடிரு.

17. Never envy evil people, but always respect the Lord.

18. நிச்சயமாகவே முடிவு உண்டு; உன் நம்பிக்கை வீண்போகாது.

18. This will give you something to hope for that will not disappoint you. � 15 �

19. என் மகனே, நீ செவிகொடுத்து ஞானமடைந்து, உன் இருதயத்தை நல்வழியிலே நடத்து.

19. So listen, my son, and be wise. Always be careful to follow the right path.

20. மதுபானப்பிரியரையும் மாம்சப்பெருந்தீனிக்காரரையும் சேராதே.

20. Don't make friends with people who drink too much wine and eat too much food.

21. குடியனும் போஜனப்பிரியனும் தரித்திரராவார்கள்; தூக்கம் கந்தைகளை உடுத்துவிக்கும்.

21. Those who eat and drink too much become poor. They sleep too much and end up wearing rags. � 16 �

22. உன்னைப் பெற்ற தகப்பனுக்குச் செவிகொடு; உன் தாய் வயதுசென்றவளாகும்போது அவளை அசட்டைபண்ணாதே.

22. Listen to your father. Without him, you would never have been born. Respect your mother, even when she is old.

23. சத்தியத்தை வாங்கு, அதை விற்காதே; அப்படியே ஞானத்தையும் உபதேசத்தையும் புத்தியையும் வாங்கு.

23. Truth, wisdom, learning, and understanding are worth paying money for. They are worth far too much to ever sell.

24. நீதிமானுடைய தகப்பன் மிகவும் களிகூருவான்; ஞானமுள்ள பிள்ளையைப் பெற்றவன் அவனால் மகிழுவான்.

24. The father of a good person is very happy. A wise child brings him joy.

25. Make both of your parents happy. Give your mother that same joy. � 17 �

26. My son, listen closely to what I am saying. Let my life be your example.

27. வேசி ஆழமான படுகுழி; பரஸ்திரீ இடுக்கமான கிணறு.

27. Prostitutes and bad women are a trap. They are like a deep well that you cannot escape.

28. அவள் கொள்ளைக்காரனைப்போல் பதிவிருந்து, மனுஷருக்குள்ளே பாதகரைப் பெருகப்பண்ணுகிறாள்.

28. A bad woman waits for you like a thief, and she causes many men to be unfaithful to their wives. � 18 �

29. ஐயோ! யாருக்கு வேதனை? யாருக்குத் துக்கம்? யாருக்குச் சண்டைகள்? யாருக்குப் புலம்பல்? யாருக்குக் காரணமில்லாத காயங்கள்? யாருக்கு இரத்தங்கலங்கின கண்கள்?

29. Who gets into fights and arguments? Who gets hurt for no reason and has red, bloodshot eyes? People who stay out too late drinking wine, staring into their strong drinks.

30. மதுபானம் இருக்கும் இடத்திலே தங்கித் தரிப்பவர்களுக்கும், கலப்புள்ள சாராயத்தை நாடுகிறவர்களுக்குந்தானே.

31. So be careful with wine. It is pretty and red as it sparkles in the cup. And it goes down so smoothly when you drink it.

32. But in the end, it will bite like a snake.

33. உன் கண்கள் பரஸ்திரீகளை நோக்கும்; உன் உள்ளம் தாறுமாறானவைகளைப் பேசும்.

33. Wine will cause you to see strange things and to say things that make no sense.

34. நீ நடுக்கடலிலே சயனித்திருக்கிறவனைப்போலும், பாய்மரத்தட்டிலே படுத்திருக்கிறவனைப்போலும் இருப்பாய்.

34. When you lie down, you will think you are on a rough sea and feel like you are at the top of the mast.

35. You will say, 'They hit me, but I never felt it. They beat me, but I don't remember it. Now I can't wake up. I need another drink.' � 19 �
