1. அப்பொழுது தேமானியனாகிய எலிப்பாஸ் பிரதியுத்தரமாக:

1. And Eliphaz the Temanite answered and said,

2. ஞானவான் காற்றைப்போன்ற நியாயங்களைச் சொல்லி, தன் வயிற்றைக் கொண்டல்காற்றினால் நிரப்பி,

2. Should a wise man answer with windy knowledge, and fill his belly with the east wind,

3. பிரயோஜனமில்லாத வார்த்தைகளாலும், உபயோகமில்லாத வசனங்களாலும் தர்க்கிக்கலாமோ?

3. Reasoning with unprofitable talk, and with speeches which do no good?

4. நீர் பயபக்தியை வீணென்று சொல்லி, தேவனுக்கு முன்பாக ஜெபத்தியானத்தைக் குறையப்பண்ணுகிறீர்.

4. Yea, thou makest piety of none effect, and restrainest meditation before *God.

5. உம்முடைய வாய் உம்முடைய அக்கிரமத்தைச் சொல்லிக்காட்டுகிறது; நீர் தந்திரமுள்ளவர்களின் நாவைத் தெரிந்துகொண்டீர்.

5. For thy mouth uttereth thine iniquity, and thou hast chosen the tongue of the crafty.

6. நான் அல்ல, உம்முடைய வாயே உம்மைக் குற்றவாளி என்று தீர்க்கிறது; உம்முடைய உதடுகளே உமக்கு விரோதமாகச் சாட்சியிடுகிறது.

6. Thine own mouth condemneth thee, and not I; and thy lips testify against thee.

7. மனுஷரில் முந்திப் பிறந்தவர் நீர் தானோ? பர்வதங்களுக்குமுன்னே உருவாக்கப்பட்டீரோ?

7. Art thou the first man that was born? and wast thou brought forth before the hills?

8. நீர் தேவனுடைய இரகசிய ஆலோசனையைக் கேட்டு, ஞானத்தை உம்மிடமாய்ச் சேர்த்துக்கொண்டீரோ?

8. Hast thou listened in the secret council of +God? And hast thou absorbed wisdom for thyself?

9. நாங்கள் அறியாத எந்தக் காரியத்தை நீர் அறிந்திருக்கிறீர்? எங்களுக்கு விளங்காத எந்தக் காரியமாவது உமக்கு விளங்கியிருக்கிறதோ?

9. What knowest thou that we know not? [what] understandest thou which is not in us?

10. உம்முடைய தகப்பனைப்பார்க்கிலும் பெரிய வயதுள்ள நரைத்தோரும் விருத்தாப்பியரும் எங்களுக்குள் இருக்கிறார்களே.

10. Both the greyheaded and the aged are with us, older than thy father.

11. தேவன் அருளிய ஆறுதல்களும், உம்மோடே சொல்லப்படுகிற மிருதுவான பேச்சும் உமக்கு அற்பகாரியமாயிருக்கிறதோ?

11. Are the consolations of *God too small for thee? and the word gently spoken to thee?

12. உம்முடைய இருதயம் உம்மை எங்கே கொண்டுபோகிறது? உம்முடைய கண்கள் நெறித்துப்பார்க்கிறது என்ன?

12. Why doth thy heart carry thee away? and why do thine eyes wink?

13. தேவனுக்கு விரோதமாக உம்முடைய ஆவியை எழுப்பி உம்முடைய வாயிலிருந்து வசனங்களைப் புறப்படப்பண்ணுகிறீர்.

13. That thou turnest thy spirit against *God, and lettest words go out of thy mouth?

14. மனுஷனானவன் பரிசுத்தமாயிருக்கிறதற்கும், ஸ்திரீயினிடத்தில் பிறந்தவன் நீதிமானாயிருக்கிறதற்கும், அவன் எம்மாத்திரம்?

14. What is man, that he should be pure? and he that is born of a woman, that he should be righteous?

15. இதோ, தம்முடைய பரிசுத்தவான்களையும் அவர் நம்புகிறதில்லை; வானங்களும் அவர் பார்வைக்குச் சுத்தமானவைகள் அல்ல.

15. Behold, he putteth no trust in his holy ones, and the heavens are not pure in his sight:

16. அநியாயத்தைத் தண்ணீரைப்போலக் குடிக்கிற மனுஷன் எத்தனை அதிகமாய் அருவருப்பும் அசுத்தமுமாயிருக்கிறான்?

16. How much less the abominable and corrupt, -- man, that drinketh unrighteousness like water!

17. உமக்குக் காரியத்தைத் தெரியப்பண்ணுவேன் என்னைக் கேளும்; நான் கண்டதை உமக்கு விவரித்துச் சொல்லுவேன்.

17. I will shew thee, listen to me; and what I have seen I will declare;

18. ஞானிகள் தங்கள் பிதாக்கள் சொல்லக் கேட்டு மறைக்காமல் அறிவித்ததையே நான் சொல்லுவேன்.

18. Which wise men have told from their fathers, and have not hidden;

19. அவர்களுக்குமாத்திரம் பூமி அளிக்கப்பட்டது; அந்நியர் அவர்கள் நடுவே கடந்துபோக இடமில்லை.

19. Unto whom alone the earth was given, and no stranger passed among them.

20. துன்மார்க்கன் உயிரோடிருக்கிற நாளெல்லாம் துன்பத்தால் வாதிக்கப்படுகிறான்; பலவந்தம்பண்ணுகிறவனுக்கு அவன் வருஷங்களின் தொகை மறைக்கப்பட்டிருக்கிறது.

20. All his days the wicked man is tormented, and numbered years are allotted to the violent.

21. பயங்கரமான சத்தம் அவன் காதுகளில் தொனிக்கிறது; அவன் சமாதானமாயிருக்கையில் பாழாக்கிறவன் அவன்மேல் வருவான்.

21. The sound of terrors is in his ears: in prosperity the destroyer cometh upon him.

22. இருளிலிருந்து திரும்பிவர அவனுக்கு நம்பிக்கையில்லாமல், பதிவிருக்கிறவர்களின் பட்டயத்துக்கு அவன் பயப்படுகிறான்.

22. He believeth not that he shall return out of darkness, and he is singled out for the sword.

23. அப்பம் எங்கே கிடைக்கும் என்று அவன் அலைந்து திரிகிறான்; அந்தகாரநாள் தனக்குச் சமீபித்திருக்கிறதை அறிவான்.

23. He wandereth abroad for bread, -- where may it be? He knoweth that the day of darkness is ready at his hand.

24. இக்கட்டும் நெருக்கமும் அவனைக் கலங்கப்பண்ணி, யுத்தசன்னத்தனான ராஜாவைப்போல அவனை மேற்கொள்ளும்.

24. Distress and anguish make him afraid; they prevail against him, as a king ready for the battle.

25. அவன் தேவனுக்கு விரோதமாகக் கைநீட்டி, சர்வவல்லவருக்கு விரோதமாகப் பராக்கிரமம் பாராட்டுகிறான்.

25. For he hath stretched out his hand against *God, and strengthened himself against the Almighty:

26. கடினக்கழுத்தோடும், பருத்த குமிழுள்ள தன் கேடயங்களோடும் அவருக்கு எதிராக ஓடுகிறான்.

26. He runneth against him, with [outstretched] neck, with the thick bosses of his bucklers;

27. அவன் முகத்தைக் கொழுப்பு மூடியிருக்கிறது; அடிவயிறு தொந்திவிட்டிருக்கிறது.

27. For he hath covered his face with his fatness, and gathered fat upon [his] flanks.

28. ஆனாலும் பாழான பட்டணங்களிலும், குடிபோன கற்குவியலான வீடுகளிலும் வாசம்பண்ணுவான்.

28. And he dwelleth in desolate cities, in houses that no man inhabiteth, which are destined to become heaps.

29. அவன் ஐசுவரியவானாவதுமில்லை, அவன் ஆஸ்தி நிலைப்பதுமில்லை; அப்படிப்பட்டவர்களின் செல்வம் பூமியில் நீடித்திருப்பதில்லை.

29. He shall not become rich, neither shall his substance continue, and their possessions shall not extend upon the earth.

30. இருளுக்கு அவன் தப்புவதில்லை; அக்கினி ஜூவாலை அவனுடைய கிளையைக் காய்ந்துபோகப்பண்ணும்; அவருடைய வாயின் சுவாசத்தால் அற்றுப்போவான்;

30. He shall not depart out of darkness; the flame shall dry up his branches; and by the breath of his mouth shall he go away.

31. வழிதப்பினவன் மாயையை நம்பானாக; நம்பினால் மாயையே அவன் பலனாயிருக்கும்.

31. Let him not trust in vanity: he is deceived, for vanity shall be his recompense;

32. அது அவன் நாள் வருமுன்னே அவனுக்குப் பூரணமாய்ப் பலிக்கும்; அவனுடைய கொப்புப் பச்சைகொள்வதில்லை.

32. It shall be complete before his day, and his branch shall not be green.

33. பிஞ்சுகள் உதிர்ந்துபோகிற திராட்சச்செடியைப்போலவும், பூக்கள் உதிர்ந்து போகிற ஒலிவமரத்தைப் போலவும் அவன் இருப்பான்.

33. He shall shake off his unripe grapes as a vine, and shall cast his flower as an olive.

34. மாயக்காரரின் கூட்டம் வெறுமையாய்ப்போகும்; பரிதானம் வாங்கினவர்களின் கூடாரங்களை அக்கினி பட்சிக்கும்.

34. For the family of the ungodly shall be barren, and fire shall consume the tents of bribery.

35. அப்படிப்பட்டவன் அநியாயத்தைக் கர்ப்பந்தரித்து அக்கிரமத்தைப் பெறுகிறான்; அவர்கள் கர்ப்பம் மாயையைப் பிறப்பிக்கும் என்றான்.

35. They conceive mischief, and bring forth iniquity, and their belly prepareth deceit.
