1. அப்பொழுது தேமானியனாகிய எலிப்பாஸ் பிரதியுத்தரமாக:

1. Then Eliphaz the Temanite answered,

2. ஞானவான் காற்றைப்போன்ற நியாயங்களைச் சொல்லி, தன் வயிற்றைக் கொண்டல்காற்றினால் நிரப்பி,

2. 'Should a wise man answer with learning that is of no worth, and fill himself with the east wind?

3. பிரயோஜனமில்லாத வார்த்தைகளாலும், உபயோகமில்லாத வசனங்களாலும் தர்க்கிக்கலாமோ?

3. Should he argue with talk that will not help, or with words that do no good?

4. நீர் பயபக்தியை வீணென்று சொல்லி, தேவனுக்கு முன்பாக ஜெபத்தியானத்தைக் குறையப்பண்ணுகிறீர்.

4. For sure you are doing away with the fear of the Lord. You are stopping the quiet worship of God.

5. உம்முடைய வாய் உம்முடைய அக்கிரமத்தைச் சொல்லிக்காட்டுகிறது; நீர் தந்திரமுள்ளவர்களின் நாவைத் தெரிந்துகொண்டீர்.

5. You show your sin by what you say. You are trying to hide behind your words.

6. நான் அல்ல, உம்முடைய வாயே உம்மைக் குற்றவாளி என்று தீர்க்கிறது; உம்முடைய உதடுகளே உமக்கு விரோதமாகச் சாட்சியிடுகிறது.

6. Your own mouth says you are guilty, and not I. Your own lips speak against you.

7. மனுஷரில் முந்திப் பிறந்தவர் நீர் தானோ? பர்வதங்களுக்குமுன்னே உருவாக்கப்பட்டீரோ?

7. 'Were you the first man to be born? Or were you made before the hills?

8. நீர் தேவனுடைய இரகசிய ஆலோசனையைக் கேட்டு, ஞானத்தை உம்மிடமாய்ச் சேர்த்துக்கொண்டீரோ?

8. Were you there to hear the secret plans of God? Are you the only one who has wisdom?

9. நாங்கள் அறியாத எந்தக் காரியத்தை நீர் அறிந்திருக்கிறீர்? எங்களுக்கு விளங்காத எந்தக் காரியமாவது உமக்கு விளங்கியிருக்கிறதோ?

9. What do you know that we do not know? What do you understand that is not clear to us?

10. உம்முடைய தகப்பனைப்பார்க்கிலும் பெரிய வயதுள்ள நரைத்தோரும் விருத்தாப்பியரும் எங்களுக்குள் இருக்கிறார்களே.

10. Men whose hair has grown white and those who have lived many years are among us. They are older than your father.

11. தேவன் அருளிய ஆறுதல்களும், உம்மோடே சொல்லப்படுகிற மிருதுவான பேச்சும் உமக்கு அற்பகாரியமாயிருக்கிறதோ?

11. Are the gentle words spoken to you, which give comfort from God, too little for you?

12. உம்முடைய இருதயம் உம்மை எங்கே கொண்டுபோகிறது? உம்முடைய கண்கள் நெறித்துப்பார்க்கிறது என்ன?

12. Why does your heart carry you away? And why do your eyes shine,

13. தேவனுக்கு விரோதமாக உம்முடைய ஆவியை எழுப்பி உம்முடைய வாயிலிருந்து வசனங்களைப் புறப்படப்பண்ணுகிறீர்.

13. that you turn your spirit against God and let such words go out of your mouth?

14. மனுஷனானவன் பரிசுத்தமாயிருக்கிறதற்கும், ஸ்திரீயினிடத்தில் பிறந்தவன் நீதிமானாயிருக்கிறதற்கும், அவன் எம்மாத்திரம்?

14. What is man, that he can be pure, or he who is born of a woman, that he can be right and good?

15. இதோ, தம்முடைய பரிசுத்தவான்களையும் அவர் நம்புகிறதில்லை; வானங்களும் அவர் பார்வைக்குச் சுத்தமானவைகள் அல்ல.

15. See, God puts no trust in His holy ones. The heavens are not pure in His eyes.

16. அநியாயத்தைத் தண்ணீரைப்போலக் குடிக்கிற மனுஷன் எத்தனை அதிகமாய் அருவருப்பும் அசுத்தமுமாயிருக்கிறான்?

16. How much less one who is hated and sinful, a man who drinks sin like water!

17. உமக்குக் காரியத்தைத் தெரியப்பண்ணுவேன் என்னைக் கேளும்; நான் கண்டதை உமக்கு விவரித்துச் சொல்லுவேன்.

17. 'I will tell you, listen to me. I will make known what I have seen,

18. ஞானிகள் தங்கள் பிதாக்கள் சொல்லக் கேட்டு மறைக்காமல் அறிவித்ததையே நான் சொல்லுவேன்.

18. what wise men have told that they learned from their fathers. They have not hidden anything.

19. அவர்களுக்குமாத்திரம் பூமி அளிக்கப்பட்டது; அந்நியர் அவர்கள் நடுவே கடந்துபோக இடமில்லை.

19. These were the ones to whom the land was given, and no stranger passed among them.

20. துன்மார்க்கன் உயிரோடிருக்கிற நாளெல்லாம் துன்பத்தால் வாதிக்கப்படுகிறான்; பலவந்தம்பண்ணுகிறவனுக்கு அவன் வருஷங்களின் தொகை மறைக்கப்பட்டிருக்கிறது.

20. The sinful man suffers in pain all his days. His years are numbered because of all his sin.

21. பயங்கரமான சத்தம் அவன் காதுகளில் தொனிக்கிறது; அவன் சமாதானமாயிருக்கையில் பாழாக்கிறவன் அவன்மேல் வருவான்.

21. Sounds of fear are in his ears. When all seems to be going well, the one who destroys will come upon him.

22. இருளிலிருந்து திரும்பிவர அவனுக்கு நம்பிக்கையில்லாமல், பதிவிருக்கிறவர்களின் பட்டயத்துக்கு அவன் பயப்படுகிறான்.

22. He does not believe that he will be taken away from darkness, and the sword is meant for him.

23. அப்பம் எங்கே கிடைக்கும் என்று அவன் அலைந்து திரிகிறான்; அந்தகாரநாள் தனக்குச் சமீபித்திருக்கிறதை அறிவான்.

23. He goes to look for food, saying, 'Where is it?' He knows that a day of darkness is near.

24. இக்கட்டும் நெருக்கமும் அவனைக் கலங்கப்பண்ணி, யுத்தசன்னத்தனான ராஜாவைப்போல அவனை மேற்கொள்ளும்.

24. Trouble and pain fill him with fear. They have power over him like a king ready for battle.

25. அவன் தேவனுக்கு விரோதமாகக் கைநீட்டி, சர்வவல்லவருக்கு விரோதமாகப் பராக்கிரமம் பாராட்டுகிறான்.

25. He has put out his hand against God, and is full of pride against the All-powerful.

26. கடினக்கழுத்தோடும், பருத்த குமிழுள்ள தன் கேடயங்களோடும் அவருக்கு எதிராக ஓடுகிறான்.

26. He rushes in pride against Him with his big battle-covering.

27. அவன் முகத்தைக் கொழுப்பு மூடியிருக்கிறது; அடிவயிறு தொந்திவிட்டிருக்கிறது.

27. His face is fat, and his thighs are heavy with fat.

28. ஆனாலும் பாழான பட்டணங்களிலும், குடிபோன கற்குவியலான வீடுகளிலும் வாசம்பண்ணுவான்.

28. He has lived in cities that have been laid waste, in houses where no one lives which will be destroyed.

29. அவன் ஐசுவரியவானாவதுமில்லை, அவன் ஆஸ்தி நிலைப்பதுமில்லை; அப்படிப்பட்டவர்களின் செல்வம் பூமியில் நீடித்திருப்பதில்லை.

29. He will no longer be rich, and what he has will not last. His grain will come to nothing.

30. இருளுக்கு அவன் தப்புவதில்லை; அக்கினி ஜூவாலை அவனுடைய கிளையைக் காய்ந்துபோகப்பண்ணும்; அவருடைய வாயின் சுவாசத்தால் அற்றுப்போவான்;

30. He will not get away from darkness. The fire will dry up his branches, and the breath of God's mouth will drive him away.

31. வழிதப்பினவன் மாயையை நம்பானாக; நம்பினால் மாயையே அவன் பலனாயிருக்கும்.

31. Let him not lie to himself and trust in what is empty. For what is empty will be his pay.

32. அது அவன் நாள் வருமுன்னே அவனுக்குப் பூரணமாய்ப் பலிக்கும்; அவனுடைய கொப்புப் பச்சைகொள்வதில்லை.

32. It will be paid in full while he still lives, and his branch will not be green.

33. பிஞ்சுகள் உதிர்ந்துபோகிற திராட்சச்செடியைப்போலவும், பூக்கள் உதிர்ந்து போகிற ஒலிவமரத்தைப் போலவும் அவன் இருப்பான்.

33. He will be like the vine that drops off its grapes before they are ready. And he will throw off his flower like the olive tree.

34. மாயக்காரரின் கூட்டம் வெறுமையாய்ப்போகும்; பரிதானம் வாங்கினவர்களின் கூடாரங்களை அக்கினி பட்சிக்கும்.

34. Those who visit the sinful bring no fruit. And fire destroys the tents of those who do wrong.

35. அப்படிப்பட்டவன் அநியாயத்தைக் கர்ப்பந்தரித்து அக்கிரமத்தைப் பெறுகிறான்; அவர்கள் கர்ப்பம் மாயையைப் பிறப்பிக்கும் என்றான்.

35. They give birth to trouble and bring sin. Their minds plan lies.'
