1. And it came to pass after many days, that the word of the Lord came to Elijah in the third year, saying, Go, and appear before Ahab, and I will bring rain upon the face of the earth.

2. And Elijah went to appear before Ahab. And the famine was severe in Samaria.

3. ஆனபடியால் ஆகாப் அரமனை விசாரிப்புக்காரனாகிய ஒபதியாவை அழைப்பித்தான்; ஒபதியா கர்த்தருக்கு மிகவும் பயந்து நடக்கிறவனாயிருந்தான்.

3. And Ahab called Obadiah the steward. Now Obadiah feared the Lord greatly.

4. And it came to pass when Jezabel had killed the prophets of the Lord, that Obadiah took a hundred prophets, and hid them by fifties in a cave, and fed them with bread and water.

5. And Ahab said to Obadiah, Come, and let us go through the land, and to the fountains of water, and to the brooks, if by any means we may find grass, and may save the horses and mules, and so they will not perish.

6. அப்படியே தேசத்தைச் சுற்றிப்பார்க்கும்படி, அதைப் பகுத்துக்கொண்டு, ஆகாப் ஒரு வழியாயும், ஒபதியா வேறொரு வழியாயும் போனார்கள்.

6. And they made a division of the way between them to pass through it; Ahab went one way, and Obadiah went by another way alone.

7. ஒபதியா வழியில் போகும்போது, எலியா அவனுக்கு எதிர்ப்பட்டான்; அவன் இவனை இன்னான் என்று அறிந்து, முகங்குப்புற விழுந்து, நீர் என் ஆண்டவனாகிய எலியா அல்லவா என்று கேட்டதற்கு;

7. And Obadiah was alone in the road; and Elijah came alone to meet him. And Obadiah made haste, and fell upon his face, and said, My lord Elijah, are you [indeed] he?

8. And Elijah said to him, I [am]: go [and] say to your master, Behold, Elijah [is here].

9. And Obadiah said, What sin have I committed, that you give your servant into the hand of Ahab to slay me?

10. உம்மைத் தேடும்படி என் ஆண்டவன் மனுஷரை அனுப்பாத ஜாதியும் ராஜ்யமும் இல்லை என்று உம்முடைய தேவனாகிய கர்த்தரின் ஜீவனைக்கொண்டு சொல்லுகிறேன்; நீர் இல்லையென்று அவர்கள் சொன்னபோது, அவன் அந்த ராஜ்யத்தையும் அந்த ஜாதியையும் உம்மைக் காணவில்லை என்று சத்தியம் வாங்கிக்கொண்டான்.

10. [As] the Lord your God lives, there is not a nation or kingdom where my lord has not sent to seek you; and if they said, He is not [here], then has he set fire to the kingdom and its territories, because he has not found you.

11. இப்போதும் நீ போய், உன் ஆண்டவனுக்கு, இதோ, எலியா வந்திருக்கிறான் என்று சொல் என்று நீர் சொல்லுகிறீரே.

11. And now you say, Go, tell your lord, Behold, Elijah [is here].

12. And it shall come to pass when I shall have departed from you, that the Spirit of the Lord shall carry you to a land which I know not, and I shall go in to tell the matter to Ahab, and he will not find you, and he will slay me; yet your servant fears the Lord from his youth.

13. Has it not been told to you my lord, what I did when Jezebel slew the prophets of the Lord, how that I hid a hundred men of the prophets of the Lord, by fifty in a cave, and fed them with bread and water?

15. And Elijah said, [As] the Lord of hosts lives, before whom I stand, today I will appear before him.

16. அப்பொழுது ஒபதியா போய், ஆகாபைச் சந்தித்து அவனுக்கு அதை அறிவித்தவுடனே, ஆகாப் எலியாவைச் சந்திக்கப்போனான்.

16. And Obadiah went to meet Ahab, and told him. And Ahab made haste, and went to meet Elijah.

17. And it came to pass when Ahab saw Elijah, that Ahab said to Elijah, Are you he that perverts Israel?

19. And now send, gather to me all Israel to Mount Carmel, and the four hundred and fifty prophets of shame, and the four hundred prophets of the groves, that eat [at] Jezebel's table.

20. அப்படியே ஆகாப்: இஸ்ரவேல் புத்திரர் எல்லாரிடத்திலும் ஆட்களை அனுப்பி, கர்மேல் பர்வதத்திலே அந்தத் தீர்க்கதரிசிகளைக் கூடிவரும்படி செய்தான்.

20. And Ahab sent to all Israel, and gathered all the prophets to Mount Carmel.

21. அப்பொழுது எலியா சகல ஜனத்தண்டைக்கும் வந்து: நீங்கள் எந்தமட்டும் இரண்டு நினைவுகளால் குந்திக்குந்தி நடப்பீர்கள்; கர்த்தர் தெய்வமானால் அவரைப் பின்பற்றுங்கள்; பாகால் தெய்வமானால் அவனைப் பின்பற்றுங்கள் என்றான், ஜனங்கள் பிரதியுத்தரமாக அவனுக்கு ஒன்றும் சொல்லவில்லை.

21. And Elijah drew near to them all. And Elijah said to them, How long will you halt on both feet? If the Lord is God, follow Him; but if Baal, follow him. And the people answered not a word.

22. அப்பொழுது எலியா ஜனங்களை நோக்கி: கர்த்தரின் தீர்க்கதரிசிகளில் மீந்திருக்கிறவன் நான் ஒருவன்; பாகாலின் தீர்க்கதரிசிகளோ நானூற்றைம்பதுபேர்.

22. And Elijah said to the people, I alone am left, the prophet of the Lord; and the prophets of Baal [are] four hundred and fifty men, and the prophets of the groves [are] four hundred.

23. இப்போதும் இரண்டு காளைகளை எங்களிடத்தில் கொண்டுவரட்டும்; ஒரு காளையை அவர்கள் தெரிந்துகொண்டு, அதைச் சந்துசந்தாகத் துண்டித்து, நெருப்புப் போடாமல் விறகுகளின்மேல் வைக்கக்கடவர்கள்; நான் மற்றக் காளையை அப்படியே செய்து, நெருப்புப் போடாமல் விறகுகளின்மேல் வைப்பேன்.

23. Let them give us two bulls, and let them choose one for themselves, and cut it in pieces, and lay it on the wood, and put no fire [on] the wood: and I will dress the other bull, but put no fire on it.

24. நீங்கள் உங்கள் தேவனுடைய நாமத்தைச் சொல்லிக் கூப்பிடுங்கள்; நான் கர்த்தருடைய நாமத்தைச் சொல்லிக் கூப்பிடுவேன்; அப்பொழுது அக்கினியினால் உத்தரவு அருளும் தெய்வமே தெய்வம் என்றான்; அதற்கு ஜனங்களெல்லாரும் இது நல்ல வார்த்தை என்றார்கள்.

24. Then you call loudly on the name of your gods, and I will call on the name of the Lord my God, and it shall come to pass that the God who shall answer by fire, He [is] God. And all the people answered and said, The word which you have spoken [is] good.

25. அப்பொழுது எலியா பாகாலின் தீர்க்கதரிசிகளை நோக்கி: நீங்கள் அநேகரானதால் நீங்களே முந்தி ஒரு காளையைத் தெரிந்துகொண்டு அதை ஆயத்தம்பண்ணி, நெருப்புப்போடாமல் உங்கள் தேவனுடைய நாமத்தைச் சொல்லிக் கூப்பிடுங்கள் என்றான்.

25. And Elijah said to the prophets of shame, Choose to yourselves one bull, and dress it first, for you [are] many; and call on the name of your god; but apply no fire.

26. தங்களுக்குக் கொடுக்கப்பட்ட காளையை அவர்கள் வாங்கி, அதை ஆயத்தம்பண்ணி: பாகாலே, எங்களுக்கு உத்தரவு அருளும் என்று காலைதொடங்கி மத்தியானமட்டும் பாகாலின் நாமத்தைச் சொல்லிக் கூப்பிட்டார்கள்; ஆனாலும் ஒரு சத்தமும் பிறக்கவில்லை, மறு உத்தரவு கொடுப்பாரும் இல்லை. அவர்கள் கட்டின பலிபீடத்திற்கு எதிரே குதித்து ஆடினார்கள்.

26. And they took the bull and dressed it, and called on the name of Baal from morning till noon, and said, hear us, O Baal, hear us. And there was no voice, neither was there hearing, and they ran up and down on the alter which they had made.

27. மத்தியானவேளையிலே எலியா அவர்களைப் பரியாசம்பண்ணி: உரத்த சத்தமாய்க் கூப்பிடுங்கள்; அவன் தேவனாமே, அவன் தியானத்தில் இருப்பான்; அல்லது அலுவலாயிருப்பான்; அல்லது பிரயாணம் போயிருப்பான்; அல்லது தூங்கினாலும் தூங்குவான்; அவனை எழுப்பவேண்டியதாக்கும் என்றான்.

27. And it was noon, and Elijah the Tishbite mocked them, and said, Call with a loud voice, for he is a god; for he is meditating, or else perhaps he is engaged in business, or perhaps he is asleep, and needs to be awakened.

28. அவர்கள் உரத்தசத்தமாய்க் கூப்பிட்டு, தங்கள் வழக்கத்தின்படியே இரத்தம் தங்கள்மேல் வடியுமட்டும் கத்திகளாலும் ஈட்டிகளாலும் தங்களைக் கீறிக்கொண்டார்கள்.

28. And they cried with a loud voice, and cut themselves according to their custom with knives and lancets until the blood gushed out upon them.

29. மத்தியானவேளை சென்றபின்பு, அந்திப்பலிசெலுத்தும் நேரமட்டாகச் சன்னதம் சொல்லிக்கொண்டிருந்தார்கள்; ஆனாலும் ஒரு சத்தமும் பிறக்கவில்லை, மறு உத்தரவு கொடுப்பாரும் இல்லை, கவனிப்பாரும் இல்லை.

29. And they prophesied until the evening came. And it came to pass as it was the time of the offering of the sacrifice, that Elijah the Tishbite spoke to the prophets of the abominations, saying, Stand by for the present, and I will offer my sacrifice. And they stood aside and departed.

30. அப்பொழுது எலியா சகல ஜனங்களையும் நோக்கி: என் கிட்டே வாருங்கள் என்றான்; சகல ஜனங்களும் அவன் கிட்டே வந்தபோது, தகர்க்கப்பட்ட கர்த்தருடைய பலிபீடத்தை அவன் செப்பனிட்டு:

30. And Elijah said to the people, Come near to me. And all the people came near to him.

31. உனக்கு இஸ்ரவேல் என்னும் பேர் இருப்பதாக என்று சொல்லி, கர்த்தருடைய வார்த்தையைப்பெற்ற யாக்கோபுடைய குமாரரால் உண்டான கோத்திரங்களுடைய இலக்கத்தின்படியே, பன்னிரண்டு கற்களை எடுத்து,

31. And Elijah took twelve stones, according to the number of the tribes of Israel, as the Lord spoke to him, saying, Israel shall be your name.

32. அந்தக் கற்களாலே கர்த்தருடைய நாமத்திற்கென்று ஒரு பலிபீடத்தைக் கட்டி, பலிபீடத்தைச் சுற்றிலும் தானியம் அளக்கிற இரண்டுபடி விதை விதைக்கத்தக்க இடமான ஒரு வாய்க்காலை உண்டாக்கி,

32. And he built up the stones in the name of the Lord, and repaired the altar that had been broken down; and he made a trench that would hold two measures of seed round about the altar.

33. விறகுகளை அடுக்கி, ஒரு காளையைச் சந்துசந்தாகத் துண்டித்து விறகுகளின்மேல் வைத்தான்.

33. And he piled the cleft wood on the altar which he [had] made, and divided the whole burnt offering, and laid [it] on the wood, and laid [it] in order on the altar, and said, Fetch me four pitchers of water, and pour [it] on the whole burnt offering, and on the wood. And they did so.

34. And he said, Do it a second time. And they did it a second time. And he said, Do it a third time. And they did it a third time.

35. அப்பொழுது தண்ணீர் பலிபீடத்தைச் சுற்றிலும் ஓடினது; வாய்க்காலையும் தண்ணீரால் நிரப்பினான்.

35. And the water ran round about the altar, and they filled the trench with water.

36. அந்திப்பலி செலுத்தும் நேரத்திலே, தீர்க்கதரிசியாகிய எலியா வந்து; ஆபிரகாமுக்கும் ஈசாக்குக்கும் யாக்கோபுக்கும் தேவனாகிய கர்த்தாவே, இஸ்ரவேலிலே நீர் தேவன் என்றும், நான் உம்முடைய ஊழியக்காரன் என்றும், நான் இந்தக் காரியங்களையெல்லாம் உம்முடைய வார்த்தையின்படி செய்தேன் என்றும் இன்றைக்கு விளங்கப்பண்ணும்.

36. And Elijah cried aloud to the heavens, and said, Lord God of Abraham, Isaac, and Israel, answer me, O Lord, answer me this day by fire, and let all this people know that You are the Lord, the God of Israel, and I [am] Your servant, and for Your sake I have done these works.

37. கர்த்தாவே, நீர் தேவனாகிய கர்த்தர் என்றும், தேவரீர் தங்கள் இருதயத்தை மறுபடியும் திருப்பினீர் என்றும் இந்த ஜனங்கள் அறியும்படிக்கு, என்னைக் கேட்டருளும், என்னைக் கேட்டருளும் என்றான்.

37. Hear me, O Lord, hear me, and let this people know that You are the Lord God, and [that] You have turned back the heart of this people.

38. அப்பொழுது: கர்த்தரிடத்தில் இருந்து அக்கினி இறங்கி, அந்தச் சர்வாங்க தகனபலியையும், விறகுகளையும், கற்களையும், மண்ணையும் பட்சித்து, வாய்க்காலிலிருந்த தண்ணீரையும் நக்கிப்போட்டது.

38. Then fire fell from the Lord out of heaven, and devoured the whole burnt offerings, and the wood and the water that was in the trench, and the fire licked up the stones and the earth.

39. ஜனங்களெல்லாரும் இதைக் கண்டபோது, முகங்குப்புற விழுந்து: கர்த்தரே தெய்வம், கர்த்தரே தெய்வம் என்றார்கள்.

39. And all the people fell upon their faces, and said, Truly the Lord [is] God! He [is] God!

40. அப்பொழுது எலியா அவர்களை நோக்கி: நீங்கள் பாகாலின் தீர்க்கதரிசிகளில் ஒருவனும் தப்பிப்போகாதபடிக்கு அவர்களைப் பிடியுங்கள் என்றான்; அவர்களைப் பிடித்தபோது, எலியா அவர்களைக் கீழே கீசோன் ஆற்றங்கரையிலே கொண்டுபோய், அங்கே அவர்களை வெட்டிப்போட்டான்.

40. And Elijah said to the people, Take the prophets of Baal; let not one of them escape. And they took them; and Elijah brought them down to the Brook Kishon, and he executed them there.

41. பின்பு எலியா ஆகாபை நோக்கி: நீர் போம், போஜனபானம்பண்ணும், பெருமழையின் இரைச்சல் கேட்கப்படுகிறது என்றான்.

41. And Elijah said to Ahab, Go up, and eat and drink, for [there is] a sound of the coming of rain.

42. And Ahab went up to eat and to drink; and Elijah went up to Carmel, and stooped to the ground, and put his face between his knees,

43. தன் ஊழியக்காரனை நோக்கி: நீ போய்ச் சமுத்திரமுகமாய்ப் பார் என்றான்; அவன் போய்ப் பார்த்து, ஒன்றும் இல்லை என்றான்; நீ இன்னும் ஏழுதரம் போய்ப் பார் என்றான்.

43. and said to his servant, Go up, and look toward the sea. And the servant looked, and said, There is nothing. And Elijah said, Go again, seven times.

44. ஏழாந்தரம் இவன்: இதோ, சமுத்திரத்திலிருந்து ஒரு மனுஷனுடைய உள்ளங்கை அத்தனைச் சிறிய மேகம் எழும்புகிறது என்றான்; அப்பொழுது அவன் நீ போய், ஆகாபை நோக்கி: மழை உம்மைத் தடைசெய்யாதபடிக்கு இரதத்தைப் பூட்டி, போய்விடும் என்று சொல் என்றான்.

44. And the servant went again seven times. And it came to pass at the seventh time, that behold, a little cloud like the sole of a man's foot brought water; and he said, Go up, and say to Ahab, make ready your chariot, and go down, lest the rain overtake you.

45. அதற்குள்ளாக வானம் மேகங்களினாலும் காற்றினாலும் கறுத்து பெருமழை உண்டாயிற்று; ஆகாப் இரதத்தில் ஏறி யெஸ்ரயேலுக்குப் போனான்.

45. And it came to pass in the meanwhile, that the heavens grew black with clouds and wind, and there was a great rain. And Ahab wept, and went to Jezreel.

46. கர்த்தருடைய கை எலியாவின்மேல் இருந்ததினால், அவன் தன் அரையைக் கட்டிக்கொண்டு, யெஸ்ரயேலுக்கு வருமட்டாக ஆகாபுக்கு முன் ஓடினான்.

46. And the hand of the Lord [was] upon Elijah, and he girded up his loins, and ran before Ahab to Jezreel.
